Fall Catalog Update
The new fall catalog will start arriving in mailboxes at the end of May. Some highlights for the semester include one-time lectures on the prevention of cognitive decline, genetic engineering, the Boise River, and the illegal wildlife trade. Multi-day short courses will feature topics including criminalistics, contemporary Russia, cancer and immunotherapy, Beethoven's 250th anniversary, and more!

Registration for these offerings will open on Tuesday, June 18.

We appreciate the support and hard work from our curriculum committees to provide a robust list of high-quality, stimulating options for the new semester. Thank you to track chairs Barbara Olic-Hamilton, Chuck Folkner, Sheri Robison, and Merilee Marsh for leading our committee meetings and helping find expert presenters. We also thank you, our members, for your suggestions which help determine the curriculum.

Thank you in advance for renewing your membership and continuing to support the Osher Institute. We can't wait to see you in class!

Have you moved or changed your email address? Make sure you receive the new catalog and important emails by updating your information.

News from the Director
I think that spring has sprung! I’ve run into scores of Osher members on the greenbelt out for early walks on the weekends and always appreciate when you stop me to say hello. I’m usually the one frequently stopping to try to find the bird that is singing so clearly or just staring at the river as it chugs and churns along. It never gets old!

We’ve passed the halfway mark of the spring semester and many of our lectures and courses are completed. We still have several upcoming classes with seats available, so please join us. I’ve been delighted with the quality of programming so far and, according to the course evaluations, the vast majority of you are also pleased. Keep those comments coming; we are inspired by your input!

This past month, we completed two large tasks. Our Advisory Board approved the 2019-2024 Strategic Plan (PDF) and we secured presenters for the fall 2019 semester. We are excited with the quality of faculty and industry-expert presenters, variety of topics, and breadth of knowledge to be shared. You can look forward to receiving a copy of the fall catalog at the end of May.

Our first Coffee & Cookies event in March was a success, thanks to those who participated. The discussions about the Osher Institute, programming and curriculum selection processes, and volunteer opportunities were engaging. The next Coffee & Cookies is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, from 12-1:00 p.m. in the Yanke Building small classroom. I’m excited to share a summary of the most recent Osher Institute survey compiled from responses of our members. It provides a great snapshot and overview of the growth and improvements in the program over the years. No registration is required; however, we will begin the overview just after 12 p.m.

As always, feel free to come by the office to say hello if you are nearby or coming to a class. I am truly honored to be part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Boise State University. To paraphrase a character from a favorite book, “All is well in the world and I am part of it.” ( Bonus points if you can tell me the book and the character’s name. )

Dana Thorp Patterson, Director
Tuesday Social SIG
Would you like an opportunity to connect with other Osher members over the summer break? Whether you're biking, jogging, walking, or just out and about downtown Boise, consider joining the casual, purely social Tuesday Social special interest group (SIG) led by Osher member Mark Eubank.

The first Tuesday Social SIG meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 4 at 10 a.m. at the Grove Plaza, 827 W. Main St. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided by the Osher Institute, and we would love to see you there! If you are interested in attending and would like to add your name to the mailing list, please contact the Osher office at osher@boisestate.edu or (208) 426-6554.
This SIG is designed to provide Osher members a social opportunity for the summer months since we are not hosting a Spring Social this year. Keep an eye on your inbox for the announcement of Packet Pick-Up Day as we expand the event to include refreshments, information about the Institute, and a great chance to connect with other members!
