DeVos Under Fire for Plan to Defund Special Olympics

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is defending her agency's plan to end federal funding for a program than benefits children with disabilities.

DeVos stood behind a proposal to cut all $17.6 million in federal funding for Special Olympics. Her comments came in response to questions from lawmakers during a House of Representatives committee hearing on President Donald Trump's budget proposal for the next fiscal year, which begins in October.

Deep Brain Stimulation Eases Specific OCD Symptoms
[Source:  Psych Central]

A new U.K. study published in the journal Biological Psychiatry finds that patients with severe OCD experienced significant relief after undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) to one of two regions of the brain: the ventral capsule (VC) or the anteromedial subthalamic nucleus (amSTN).
Most notably, depending on which of these regions was stimulated, the technique produced distinct effects: stimulation of the VC drastically improved mood, whereas stimulation of the amSTN in the same patients improved cognitive flexibility. OCD

Children Develop PTSD When They Ruminate Over Their Trauma
[Source: Science Daily]

While most children recover well after a traumatic event, some go on to develop PTSD that may stay with them for months, years, or even into adulthood.

A new study, published today, reveals that children begin down this route when they have trouble processing their trauma and perceive their symptoms as being a sign that something is seriously wrong.

Book Recommendation: Language at the Speed of Sight
[Source:  Reading Rockets.org]

A few months ago, I read Mark Seidenberg's Language at the Speed of Sight.  Seidenberg is a psychologist who studies reading, and his book is remarkably intelligent, frank, and witty. I think there is an occasional mistake or ambiguity here and there, but overall I was mesmerized.
Typically, I don't do reviews here and don't intend to today. Instead, I have pulled several incisive quotes from the text that captured my attention (there were many more, I assure you), and I have added comments of my own. I hope you and your colleagues will read

Peds Tx Corner: Learning Styles: Is Visual Learning Really A Thing?
[Source:  Mind Shift]

It's common to hear people say, "I'm a visual learner," but  research doesn't support the idea that learning styles like visual or auditory learning are inherent traits. That doesn't mean learners don't have preferences, but only one flawed study found that people actually learned better when information was presented in their preferred style. Instead, it seems that most people learn the best when information is presented in multiple ways, especially when one of them is visual.
