DeVos Under Fire for Plan to Defund Special Olympics
|
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is defending her agency's plan to end federal funding for a program than benefits children with disabilities.
DeVos stood behind a proposal to cut all $17.6 million in federal funding for Special Olympics. Her comments came in response to questions from lawmakers during a House of Representatives committee hearing on President Donald Trump's budget proposal for the next fiscal year, which begins in October.

Judge: Insurer's Guidelines For ABA, Behavioral Health 'Tainted'

MINNEAPOLIS - A UnitedHealth Group subsidiary breached its fiduciary duty by adopting coverage guidelines that did not reflect general standards of care, a federal judge said this week in a ruling that advocates say could help improve coverage for mental health and addiction services in employer health plans.

New Link Between Childhood Obesity and Early Infant Feeding

New research from Western Sydney University suggests that infants in South Western Sydney introduced to formula and solid foods within the first four months, could be twice as likely to suffer from childhood obesity.
The study, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health
, tracked the health and weight of 346 infants from the area over a ten-year period. Lead researcher of the study, Dr. Haider Mannan from the Translational Health Research

Deep Brain Stimulation Eases Specific OCD Symptoms
|

A new U.K. study published in the journal Biological Psychiatry finds that patients with severe OCD experienced significant relief after undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) to one of two regions of the brain: the ventral capsule (VC) or the anteromedial subthalamic nucleus (amSTN).
Most notably, depending on which of these regions was stimulated, the technique produced distinct effects: stimulation of the VC drastically improved mood, whereas stimulation of the amSTN in the same patients improved cognitive flexibility. OCD

Children Develop PTSD When They Ruminate Over Their Trauma
|

While most children recover well after a traumatic event, some go on to develop PTSD that may stay with them for months, years, or even into adulthood.
A new study, published today, reveals that children begin down this route when they have trouble processing their trauma and perceive their symptoms as being a sign that something is seriously wrong.

It's common to hear people say, "I'm a visual learner," but
research doesn't support the idea that learning styles like visual or auditory learning are inherent traits. That doesn't mean learners don't have preferences, but only one flawed study found that people actually learned better when information was presented in their preferred style. Instead, it seems that most people learn the best when information is presented in multiple ways, especially when one of them is visual.
