Senior Spotlight : Meghan Hamel
An Article by Counselor Dianne McCarthy
Meghan Hamel has a quiet yet driven personality, an honest and caring ways of approaching her peers and adults, and an optimistic and determined way of pushing herself outside of her comfort zone. She is a fabulous young woman to work with, as she accepts that we all cannot know what we are destined to "be" as an adult when we are only 17, and challenges herself to explore options and opportunities to help discover what it is she truly enjoys and may find as a college major and future career.
Meghan's academic record with our school is impressive. She believes that hard work is important, and will not settle for a class that will not challenge her and force her to work harder than she sometimes desires. Her schedule has included several AP classes as well as dual enrollment courses and an internship which was created to help her expand her skills in Computer Aided Design and Engineering. Dr. Young says "I've known Meghan for three years now, and those were all in challenging Honors or AP mathematics or science courses. Meghan is quiet, but definitely a "go-to" in any of my classes. If something is up, she can ask about it, but, generally, is taking care of what she needs to do/know and earning top grades. Ask her what she earned on that last AP summative! She is also a nice person to talk with, even regarding a certain Mazda3 out in the student lot."
One of the things that impress those who work with Meghan continues to be her ability to challenge herself and shove the fear of trying something new aside. As a senior it would be rare to find someone who tries a new sport for the first time, and this year she decided to try out and successfully make the SRHS Varsity Cheer team. Her natural talent allowed her a spot on the team, but her hard work is making it possible for her to maintain the spot. Managing the practices, competitions, and games in addition to her hefty course load, work schedule, and college application process has been stressful but she continues to feel that she is adjusting herself mentally and physically for what her future will bring.
Meghan's senior year has continued to bring her several accomplishments through college acceptances and at this time is choosing where she would like to attend out of several options. Regardless of her choice, we know she will bring fabulous traits to her new school!
Senior Spotlight : Hunter Moomey
An Article by Teacher Jules Ryan
Hunter Moomey is a dedicated student in the school of life. He takes it all in--from pop culture phenomena to classic literature to underground music groups--and when he is interested in something, he educates himself and becomes the expert. He examines the multiple perspectives on a given topic, and carefully crafts his own, making sure that he always stays true to himself. He isn't afraid to offer his unique perspective on the aspects of the world that we have come to accept as commonplace, especially when he disagrees with them. When Hunter forms an opinion, he finds a way to take a stand, and try to educate others about what he has come to know. We could all learn something from Hunter, who firmly believes in standing up for the little guy, and creating change when you see a problem.

Hunter is also the kind of person who leaves an impression on all of the people he meets. English teacher Lauren Petraitis says, "Hunter is the kind of student that questions teachers: why are they teachers? Why do students need to learn these things? Why don't we all just go into the woods and simply be? Eccentric and intelligent, he captivates his peers with his eloquence. Hunter has been known to stand informally before his class and simply present them with a controversial topic. From there he orchestrates a thoughtful and well facilitated discussion where everyone is engaged and alert. He both accepts and rejects many things in life, but only because of his critical thinking and valid skepticism. Though Hunter does not always agree with me, I appreciate him as a student more than he knows and I know that no matter what he chooses to do in life he will continue to lead it with a passionate, inquisitive mind and heart."

One of Hunter's former teachers, Michael Corkery, says "I've watched Hunter grow from a skeptical teenager into a young man that challenges the legitimacy of the world at every corner. Hunter sees injustice in the world, and he has learned to harness the suffering he sees into songs, poems, and other pieces of writing. He hasn't always agreed with me, but Hunter can and will do what he sets his mind to. I am certain there will be many opportunities for me to say, 'can you believe it? I used to teach that guy!'"

Hunter Moomey is the kind of person to walk into your life and make you revisit the way that you do things and why you started to do them in the first place. I am so glad that Hunter was in my English class as a Freshman, and that I have been able to watch him grow over his high school career. I can't wait to see what comes next for Hunter!

Senior Spotlight : Megan Sheehan
An Article by Teacher Jules Ryan

Within the first few days of meeting Megan Sheehan three and a half years ago, I realized that she was not the typical high school freshman. She is academically talented, with her proclivity for logical, STEM-oriented thinking while still remaining an avid reader of all things fantasy, and being a very talented writer.  She is curious and considerate, and many people mistake Megan for being shy. Megan is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in or be the center of attention--she just chooses to do it on her terms.

Megan truly stepped into her own when she joined the Track and Field team. Megan worked to hone her craft, diligently attending practices both through SRHS and through her own private trainer. She became a master thrower, breaking school and state records and even earning herself a spot on a college throwing team at Assumption, where she will be attending in the fall.

This determination and drive extends beyond Megan's athletics and into the classroom. Mark Giuliucci, Librarian and Megan's Freshman Global Studies teacher, says " I have always appreciated Megan's passion and dedication during her time at Sanborn. Reading, academics, athletics -- once she sets her mind to accomplish something, success always follows." Megan has also spent her senior year working on independent lab work outside of her typical science classes. She goes above and beyond the expectations for a high school senior, and has earned the trust of the science department to take on various responsibilities in the science labs. There is no doubt that if Megan decides she is going to achieve something, she will make sure that happens.

Megan is also a fierce advocate for each person's right to be exactly who they want to be, and she makes sure to go out of her way to make others feel comfortable in their own skin. Megan acts as a mentor for younger students through the Sanborn Sisters program, where she shares her own passions and talents and helps others to discover their own. Megan reminds students that there is nothing more important than being the best version of yourself.

As Megan closes her chapter with SRHS and moves onto her next phase at Assumption College, her former teachers know that she will undoubtedly find success. Megan is resilient and brave, and we cannot wait to see what she does next.
Graduation Date Set for June 15, 2018
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Dear Seniors,
It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for Friday, June 15, 2018 . Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.
If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. If this is the case all attendees will need a ticket to enter the gym. The week of graduation you will receive eight (8) admission tickets for the gymnasium ceremony. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 8 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than eight.

The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the "probationary" graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to their counselor to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Please note the mandatory activities and graduation practices on June 14 and 15. Please also remember that all students must have their $50 class dues ($20 senior dues) paid in order to participate in the graduation ceremonies.

The prom is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2018. In order for students to be eligible for the prom, ALL of the following conditions must be met:

By signing this contract, the student understands that if they purchase a ticket for the prom and then are found to be ineligible to attend, they will NOT be issued a refund and they will NOT be able to attend the prom.
