The Altar Curtain in the
Armenian Church

During Great Lent, the altar curtain remains closed in the Armenian Church to symbolize man's expulsion from the Garden of Eden and to emphasize the spirit of repentance and forbearance characterizing the 40-day period preceding Holy Week. Many churches replace the traditional altar curtain with dark and simple drapery bearing little or no embroidery.

FAR Assists Ambitious Syrian-Armenian Architectural Student
An Aleppo native, Noura Toubrakji is one of FAR's Nishanian Foundation Scholarship Students, which enables her to study at the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia. Yet even though Noura was able to attend school through the Nishanian Scholarship, she wasn't able to afford necessary supplies for her architecture and design program. Through FAR's Assistance for Parentless Children and Youth Program, FAR presented her with a new laptop.
Assistance for Parentless Children has already supported more than 45 orphanage alumni, orphans and resettled Syrian-Armenian families and youth in myriad ways.
"With this laptop I can help build myself a decent portfolio, which is what I need to find a job," Noura said. "I don't imagine my future in Syria or any other country, just Armenia as this is my Hayreniq (motherland)."

Judgment-by Man and God
A common thread runs through the Lenten Gospel reading for Sunday, March 31-the Sunday of the Judge.
In one parable, our Lord tells the story of a widow who would not cease calling on a judge for justice-and we are meant to think about our own prayers to heaven. In a second parable, a Pharisee and a tax collector pray in the Temple, displaying very different attitudes towards God.
In both stories, Jesus teaches about the coming of God's kingdom, and the judgment of all mankind. Christ leads us to see that as human beings, we stand before God every day. Indeed one day, at the coming of His kingdom, we will stand before Him as our judge.
This weekend also commemorates the Forty Martyrs of Sebastia: a company of soldiers from one of Asia Minor's greatest cities-Armenians among them-who were brought before an earthly judge and condemned for the "crime" of their Christian faith.

Saintly Women's Day Celebration
This year the Women's Guild celebrated Saintly Women's Day by honoring three women from the Holy Gospels: the woman who touched Jesus' cloak, the woman who anointed Jesus' head at Bethany and the Syrophoenician woman. The guest speaker for the day was Robin Darling Young, Ph.D., Associate Professor, from The Catholic University of America. Professor Young's presentation, "Women Saints in the Narratives of Early Christian Armenia", was a thought provoking reflection on the three women being honored for the day.
Almost 100 guests, including many from Soorp Khatch and the Baltimore area, enjoyed a delicious and plentiful Lenten lunch prepared by the Saintly Women's Day Committee, the Women's Guild Executive Committee and a few volunteer members of the Women's Guild.
The St. Mary Women' Guild Executive Committee is grateful to the SWD Committee and the volunteers for their hard work and dedication to their guild, their church and their community. The Executive Committee is also thankful to all those who supported the event with their attendance and ensured it's success.

Lenten Service, Discussion and Dinner Series 2019
The fourth presentation of a six night series took place on Wednesday, March 27. Parishioners and friends came together for a worship service, spiritual presentation and dinner with this year's theme entitled "Leading to Easter: Searching the Soul". The topic concentrates on the journey through Lent meditating on the last three chapters of the Gospel of Matthew. The season of Lent is a season for searching the soul through the lenses of the people closest to Jesus in His last hours. The last three chapters of Matthew are a juxtaposition of stories.
Mr. Eric Ashbahian gave a meditation on how Peter, Judas, and Pilate demonstrated different ways of fail in faith. Concentrating on the verses found in Matthew 26:69-27:26, he led the audience to meditate on the story of three failures - Peter, Judas, and Pilate who demonstrate different ways one may fail in faith. He urged everyone to learn from their experience and pray for and think of ways how to avoid their failures.
Toward the end of the service and presentation the parishioners enjoyed each others fellowship and dinner hosted and sponsored by the members of St. Mary Choir

"Leading to Easter: Searching the Soul"
Please join us Wednesdays during Lent for prayer service, spiritual discussion, and dinner.
This year we will journey through Lent meditating on the last three chapters of the Gospel of Matthew.
The season of Lent is a season for searching the soul. As you study Matthew 26-28, you will search your own soul through the lenses of the people closest to Jesus in His last hours. The last three chapters of Matthew are a juxtaposition of stories.
Throughout our journey we will address Communion, Jesus' deserters, His submission to the Father, and His crucifixion. While the theme of rejection runs through these chapters in Matthew, there is good news: joy of the resurrection that you can experience with new eyes.

A Day of Celebration on May 18
Saturday, May 18 will be a day to give thanks and celebrate optimism for the future in the Eastern Diocese. It will begin with a special Divine Liturgy at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York, marking the return of our Primate to the U.S., following his ordination as a bishop of the Armenian Church.
The newly-ordained Bishop Daniel Findikyan will celebrate his first episcopal Divine Liturgy among the faithful of the Eastern Diocese, beginning at 10 a.m. It will be followed by a reception in the Diocesan Center's Haik and Alice Kavookjian Auditorium.

That evening, St. Nersess Seminary will hold a special tribute event to benefit the seminary and its ongoing mission.
The banquet at Old Tappan Manor (in Old Tappan, NJ), titled "Hope and Gratitude," will honor the former and current presidents of the seminary board of directors-Archbishop Khajag Barsamian and Bishop-elect Daniel Findikyan-while celebrating the history and future of St. Nersess.

Episcopal Ordination Pilgrimage: Places Still Available
Faithful from throughout the Eastern Diocese are planning to travel to Armenia to share in the consecration of our Diocesan Primate, Fr. Daniel Findikyan, as a bishop of the Armenian Church. The ceremony will take place on the weekend of May 11-12, 2019. His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, will confer the sacrament at Holy Etchmiadzin.

2019 Diocesan Assembly to Meet in Watertown, MA
The 117th Diocesan Assembly will convene May 2-4, 2019, at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA. The St. James Church of Watertown, MA, will host the Diocesan Assembly, the concurrent Women's Guild Assembly, and the Clergy Conference (meeting April 29-May 1), bringing together hundreds of Armenian Church leaders from the Eastern Diocese. Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan will preside.
Clergy, Diocesan delegates, and parish council chairs will soon receive notification (via mail and e-mail) regarding registration. Information on the 117th Diocesan Assembly-including online registration and room reservations-will be available on the St. James parish website in the coming weeks.

"Իմ ոսոխի դէմ իմ դատը տե՛ս": 4 Եւ դատաւորը երկար ժամանակ չէր ուզում. դրանից յետոյ իր մտքում ասաց. "Թէեւ Աստծուց չեմ վախենում եւ մարդկանցից չեմ ամաչում, 5 բայց այն բանի համար, որ այրի կինը ինձ յոգնեցնում է, նրա դատը տեսնեմ, որպէսզի անընդհատ չգայ եւ ինձ չանհանգստացնի"»: 6 Եւ Տէրն ասաց. «Լսեցէ՛ք, թէ ինչ էր ասում անիրաւ դատաւորը: 7 Իսկ Աստուած արդարութիւն չի՞ անի իր այն ծառաներին, որոնք գիշեր եւ ցերեկ աղաղակում են. եւ նրանց հանդէպ միայն համբերատա՞ր կլինի: 8 Այո՛, ասում եմ ձեզ. նրանց իսկոյն արդարութիւն կանի. իսկ երբ մարդու Որդին գայ, արդեօք երկրի վրայ հաւատ կգտնի՞»: 9 Այս առակն էլ ասաց ոմանց, ովքեր իրենց ներսում պարծենում էին, թէ արդար են, եւ արհամարհում էին ուրիշ շատերին: 10 «Երկու մարդ տաճար ելաւ աղօթքի կանգնելու. մէկը՝ փարիսեցի, միւսը՝ մաքսաւոր: 11 Փարիսեցին կանգնած էր մեկուսի եւ ինքն իրեն այս աղօթքն էր ասում. "Աստուա՛ծ իմ, շնորհակալ եմ քեզնից, որ ես նման չեմ ուրիշ մարդկանց, ինչպէս յափշտակողները, անիրաւներն ու շնացողները եւ կամ ինչպէս այս մաքսաւորը. 12 այլ շաբաթը երկու անգամ ծոմ եմ պահում եւ տասանորդ եմ տալիս իմ ամբողջ եկամտից": 13 Իսկ մաքսաւորը կանգնած էր մեկուսի եւ չէր իսկ կամենում իր աչքերը երկինք բարձրացնել, այլ ծեծում էր կուրծքը եւ ասում. "Աստուա՛ծ, ների՛ր ինձ՝ մեղաւորիս": 14 Ասում եմ ձեզ. սա՛ իջաւ իր տունը արդարացած, ոչ թէ՝ միւսը. ով որ բարձրացնում է իր անձը, կխոնարհուի, եւ ով որ խոնարհեցնում է իր անձը, կբարձրացուի»:
