A Note from Peter Here
peter new pic
We have much to look forward to over the next several weeks. This coming Sunday is our Blue Jean Sunday, where we pay homage to one of David Bowie’s greatest songs from the 80’s…..no, actually, it’s a time when we gather to care for our campus—wear your jeans, work clothes, gloves, and prepare to get dirty! But please don’t forget to come in for communion when it’s time. The fun starts after the 9 am service.

On May 20, we’ll have a ministry showcase where you’ll have the chance to learn how to participate in several of our ministries. And on June 3, we’ll have our outdoor Bluegrass Mass, featuring the Third Sunday Band.

But I would love to invite you, and especially your curious children, to a time on Saturday morning, June 9 when we’ll talk about Communion: what it is, why we do it, and how to participate. Each week we invite everyone to receive, but many children might not understand the full importance of what we do—frankly, many adults lose the significance as well. So, at 10 am, we’ll meet for about 45 minutes to go over the sacrament to give everyone a better understanding. The following day at the 9 am service, children and parents will be invited to seat in a special section of the church and receive together. Children may also want to circle the altar as the priest blesses the elements and prepares to share. Please join us!

Upcoming Youth Events

Summer Mission Trip
North Carolina Coastline Disaster Relief
July 15-21 (age 14 and up – this is because there is power tool use) Cost: approx. $250 (scholarships are available) Deadline July 1

Brethren Disaster Ministries' Rebuild Program engages volunteers to repair and rebuild storm damaged homes for some of the most vulnerable disaster survivors, thereby easing trauma and promoting recovery. Trained construction leaders and household leaders provide volunteer orientation and instruction on the work site, as well as meals at the volunteers' houses. Unskilled volunteers willing to learn are invited to work alongside those who are skilled and willing to teach. Volunteer housing is provided, often at local churches or community buildings, where weekly volunteers and leaders stay, eat and become more connected with the community.

Summer Planning for SMC Youth
We are looking for parents of SMC youth to host an activity so that our youth will have a chance to get together and have some fun this summer. Nothing fancy. You could do a game-and-pizza night, an afternoon bowling out of the hot Maryland sun, or even running through the hose in your back yard! The church can provide you with $50 to defray any costs incurred, and we will provide you with the e-mail list so you can stay in contact with folks. To follow up, contact Jeff Conover.
