but cannot save a dime.
He is rude and nasty.
He is polite as can be.
He wants parental guidance,
but fights to be free.
He is aggressive and bossy.
He is timid and shy.
He knows all the answers,
but still will ask "why"?
He is awkward and clumsy.
He is graceful and poised.
He is ever changing,
but do not be annoyed.

It is an honor to serve the Baraboo community as the Principal of Jack Young Middle School. I have worked in the Baraboo School District since 1993 and I am proud to call Baraboo home.
It is both my personal and professional goal to provide each and every student in the Baraboo School District with a safe and challenging academic environment. Our most precious resource is our children and we must continuously work to provide them with the highest quality education possible.
Jack Young Middle School is committed to providing every student with opportunities to learn at a level of challenge uniquely appropriate for them. We offer a wide variety of learning opportunities, led by highly qualified teachers.
I am married to Lynn Gunnell, who is currently the Choir Director at Baraboo High School. We have three children in the Baraboo School District, including one current middle school student.
I love Jack Young Middle School and my goal is to create a middle school that kids love too.

Summer Food Service Program
|
This summer, the Baraboo School District will again take part in the Federally Funded Summer Food Service Program. We will serve breakfast and lunch at three sites (Jack Young Middle School, Al Behrman Elementary School and GLW Elementary School), plus we will be delivering lunches to the Boy's and Girl's Club. The meals are free to all children 18 years of age and younger. Any adults accompanying the children will get a free meal as well, paid for by a local church. Children do not need to attend Summer School to take part in this program. JYMS and ABE Sites are open to the general public during serving hours. GLW is for Kid Stop kids only.
The program will run from Monday, June 11, 2018 - Wednesday, July 11, 2018, Monday thru Friday. All sites will be closed on July 4 - 6, 2018 in observance of the July 4th Holiday.
Here are the sites and hours of operation:
GLW: Open only to students participating in the Summer Kid Stop Program - breakfast and lunch will be served.
JYMS: Breakfast served from 7 AM - 8:30 AM/ Lunch from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM.
ABE: Breakfast served from 7:30 - 8:30 AM/ Lunch from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM.

A Reminder from Ms. Schumacher

Many children can forget some of the skills they've learned over the summer months. When students lose or forget th
ese skills, this is called summer slide. When kids don't practice their reading over the summer, they can fall behind when school starts up again.
Here are some reading activities we recommend to try over the summer:

Set a reading goal: Six books to summer success! Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a student from regressing. Read for pleasure. Create a wishlist, and work your way through it! Fall in love with a good book.

Read something every day. Take advantage of every opportunity to read. Bring books with you in the car, to the beach, to the doctor's office, or to the park. Reread books that you really enjoy. Read on your phone or device. You can download the OverDrive app to access the Jack Young Middle School's e-Library for ebooks and audiobooks all summer long!

Visit the Library. Your public library has some great reading programs for kids and teens in the summer. You can also get access to books and resources. If you can't get to the library, keep your eye out for the Little Free Libraries around town! Leave a book; take a book!

National History Day News

National History Day is an academic enrichment program for students in grades 6-12. Students select topics connected to an annual theme and complete their own in-depth research on the topic. This year, the annual theme is "Taking a Stand in History." Students present their conclusions by creating museum-style exhibits, media documentaries, research papers, interactive websites, and dramatic performances.
Twenty-two eighth grade students from Jack Young Middle School took part in the National History Day State competition in Madison on April 23rd, 2018.
Congratulations to Alice D., Katie G. and Trinity S., chosen to represent Wisconsin at the National competition with their Junior Group Performance, entitled The Fight for Women's Suffrage: Conflict Inside the Movement. Also, Eric G. and Jason J. were asked to represent Wisconsin at the National competition with their Junior Group Website, entitled Hamilton vs. Jefferson: The Conflict that Created the Political Party System in America. These students will be traveling to the Washington DC area to compete in the
National Contest which will be held June 10-14, 2018 at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The end of the school year is quickly approaching. For kids on summer vacation, the promise of days spent swimming at the pool, riding bikes, and playing video games is exciting. Something to make sure your child adds to their summer routine is regular reading time each day. The importance of reading twenty minutes per day does not diminish during vacation. As a matter of fact, without the guarantee of this time during the school day, it is even more important that it happen during vacation so that the dreaded "summer slide" can be prevented. There are many resources to help your child stay motivated to read this summer. Check out the Baraboo Public Library's summer reading programs at www.baraboopubliclibrary.org. They have planned a great summer of reading activities! There are lots of resources available online, too. Scholastic has free book lists and access to book experts at as part of their summer reading challenge. Click this link for a copy of their reading list:
Each year I publish a suggested summer reading list that you can find at readersweb.pbworks.com. And of course there are the many Little Free Libraries scattered throughout our community that you and your child can access, including the JYMS Little Free Library. Have a safe, happy and book-filled summer!
