A Message From Dr. Brost
Dear Parents:

We will soon wrap up another school year and graduate the Class of 2018! Even though they are a bit nervous about "leaving the nest," seniors are excited for the next phase of their lives. Seniors will take their Final Exams on May 29, 30, and 31. Graduation practice is at 9:00 a.m. on June 1. All students participating in Commencement must attend practice. Commencement is at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 3. There is no limit on the number of family members or guests who may attend graduation. Underclassmen will have their Final Exams on June 5, 6, & 7. Details of their schedule will be e-mailed via Infinite Campus the last week in May.

We will be collecting all student Chromebooks and chargers at the end of the school year. They will be looked over to make sure they are ready for the upcoming school year. The process for collecting them is being finalized and will be communicated to students as the end of the year draws closer. Students should also make certain that all fines and fees are taken care of prior to final exams. These will be posted on the main office window.

Advanced Placement exams begin the week of May 7. Exams are administered at the District Office again this year. Students should make sure that they know the schedule for their assessments and that they arrive in time to park and get to the assigned room.

Students continue to be involved in many great experiences beyond the classroom. Some of these include the recent completion of the musical, Crazy for You, the State Forensics Meet, HOSA, FBLA, and DECA competitions, a Jazz Band Festival in Eau Claire, and all of the spring sports. We are very proud of the dedication our students, advisors, and coaches make in our co-curricular activities. We are equally proud of how our students conduct themselves when competing and performing.

Juniors and seniors are looking forward to Prom on May 5. Senior Recognition will be at 6:30 p.m. on May 16. The Fine Arts Recognition is in the auditorium at 8:00 p.m. on May 30. The next Parent/Educator Forum will be in the IMC on May 21.

As both Prom and Graduation approach, please remind your student to make good decisions. We want students to enjoy these celebrations AND be safe. We know from research that teenage brains are still developing. As a result, they tend to think that nothing can happen to them.

We are looking forward to a great end to the school year. Please contact us with any questions.

Sincerely,

Paul Brost, Ph.D.
Principal

Parent Educator Forum Meeting
All parents/guardians of MGHS students are welcome to attend the Parent Educator Forum meeting on Monday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. This will be the last meeting of the school year!

Parent Educator Forum is an informal meeting in which Dr. Brost gives a brief overview of current issues in education and events occurring at the high school, occasionally followed by group discussion. There is no formal agenda, it's an opportunity for parents to have contact with high school staff, without dues or volunteering. Typically, we meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 in the IMC (library) for about an hour. This is a great opportunity to meet with Dr. Brost in a small group setting, hear what's going on at the high school level and discuss issues!! Parents interested in what is discussed can email Lisa Stangler at [email protected] to get notes from our most recent meeting. We'd love to see new faces!

Overtime takes place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 in the IMC.  Please encourage your student to take advantage of the Overtime Program if they need additional help with an assignment or in one of their classes.

ACT Results and Score Reports
Students who have questions about how and when they will receive their ACT score reports from state testing in February are asked to see page 28 of their "Taking the ACT Test" booklet that was distributed during pre-administration bubbling.
  • If students already have an ACT web account, they should wait at least 2-3 weeks after the test date to log in to their account and check to see if their multiple choice scores have been posted; writing scores are usually posted about two weeks after the multiple choice scores are posted.
  • If students do not have an ACT web account, they must wait until after they receive their mailed score report before creating an account. ACT with writing score reports are mailed 5-8 weeks after the test date. To create their account, students will need to enter the ACT ID from their paper score report.
Advanced Placement Testing 2018
Students registered to take the Advanced Placement Exams are reminded that the regularly scheduled exams will be administered between May 7 - May 18. A copy of each student's exam schedule including dates, times and rooms of the exams will be sent to the students via the email used when registering for the exams. A reminder that all testing will occur at the Monona Grove District Office. Transportation is not provided to or from the district office, please make necessary arrangements prior to the date of the exam, and if possible, carpool with classmates as parking is limited. If transportation will be problematic, please see Susan Bishop at least one week prior to your AP Exam date and she will assist you in making these arrangements.

All students must arrive to the test location at the time noted during your registration (typically 7:40 for morning exams and 11:40 for afternoon exams).  Late arrivals will not be admitted and you will not be allowed to test in the late testing sessions. You must stay for the entire duration of the testing; no leaving early is allowed (including for sporting events). Talk to coaches or advisors if you have an activity the day of one of your exams to arrange to arrive late.

NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED IN THE TESTING ROOM!
No electronic equipment (cell phone, smartphone, smartwatch, fitbit, laptop, tablet computer, chrome books, portable listening or recording devices (MP3 player or iPod), cameras or other photographic equipment, devices that can access the internet, or any other electronic or communication devices are allowed during the administration or breaks. If a student is found to have a cell phone or any other electronic device, the device will be confiscated, and the student must be dismissed from the testing room. The student's score will be cancelled and fees will not be returned. These rules apply during the exams as well as during breaks and following the exam prior to dismissal.

Eat a nutritional breakfast the morning of your exam(s). If you have two exams in one day, please pack a lunch to eat quickly between exams. You will not have time to leave and get something. If you participate in the free or reduced lunch meal program, please let Susan Bishop know at least one week prior to your exam so that she can make arrangements for you to have a healthy meal.

Bring sharpened number two pencils (NO mechanical pencils), a black or blue pen, and if necessary, a calculator or straightedge to your exam.

Any questions can be directed to Susan Bishop.

Financial Aid Offers...Now What?
Are you confused by your financial aid offer or wondering how to fill in the gaps between a financial aid offer and the cost of tuition? Karla Weber, Communications Manager at the UW-Madison Office of Student Financial Aid, shares information regarding next steps in making decisions related to financial aid. Also, remember that your best resource to answer your financial aid related questions is the financial aid office at the college where you will be attending in the fall. (see article below)

The offers of financial aid have arrived - now what?
After submitting applications and lots of waiting, your students are likely getting their offers of financial aid. Now your family needs to make some BIG decisions - where do you start?

Identify the sources of financial aid your student is being offered. Remember anything labeled "Grant" or "Scholarship" is the good stuff - that's free money that never needs to be repaid. These funds ultimately reduce your out of pocket cost for college. "Work-study" is an employment program. Your student will need to work to earn the dollars they've been offered through the program. Anything labeled "Loan" is money that will eventually need to be repaid - sometimes with interest. Always take a "Subsidized" loan first - the interest on subsidized loans doesn't begin accruing until after your student finished their degree-program.

If your student applied to more than one school - compare their offers of financial aid. Start by taking each schools' tuition and cost for housing and subtract their individual offers of FREE money (grants/scholarships) from that total. The remaining amount is what will have to be covered through other financial means, whether that be taking out educational loans, working, etc. This remaining amount is often called the "Net Price" and is the number you want to compare between schools - which school will provide you with the lowest Net Price?

If what your student has been offered isn't enough, families of undergraduates have two additional loan options they can pursue:
* Federal Parent Loan for Undergrad Student (PLUS). This is a federal loan that the parent of a dependent undergraduate can apply for and receive. Some schools include this loan in their offer, others don't. Why? It's not a guaranteed loan and requires a separate application and basic credit check through  https://studentloans.gov.
* Private Educational Loans. Some schools may have a preferred private loan lender list. Otherwise, we encourage families to start with the bank/credit union you're already a member of to see what educational loans they offer. In general, private loans can vary drastically in terms of interest rates, repayment terms, etc. Make sure you do thorough research before you agree to take out any private loans!
Please also make sure to take some time in the coming months to talk to your students about money management and budgeting. Studies have shown that students learn the most about managing money from their parents. Does your student have a checking or savings account? Do they understand credit and/or credit cards? If you don't talk to your student about money - who will?

It is also never too late to save for college. If your student has a summer job, have him/her save some earnings each week to have spending money when they get to campus.

And, don't forget that the Financial Aid Office at the schools your student is considering are truly your BEST resource to help you through the process. There's also great, general financial aid information online through the Federal Student Aid website - https://studentaid.ed.gov.

MG Lunch and Learn
Monona Grove students who are interested in a career in law enforcement had an opportunity to have lunch with two City of Madison police officers. Officer Nelson and Offer Samson answered student questions and told stories of their careers in law enforcement. Students learned the importance of a clear record, community service and credits after high school in order to join the police force. Thanks for visiting MG, Officer Nelson and Officer Samson!
MG Forensics
Seven MG High School students competed at the State Forensics Festival on April 21 on the UW Madison campus.    All seven of these students earned medals: Kylie Hollenstein, Sydney Dean, Katie Wallner, Sarah Fahlberg (gold), Kambria Farwell (silver), and Evelyn Marx and Skye Liston (bronze).  The state festival finished up the Forensics Team's competition for the year.  These students, as well as several others, also competed at Sub-District and District competitions during the month of March.  Each one of them should be commended for their hard work and dedication.  And since the team consisted of only one senior, the future looks very bright.
MG DECA
MG DECA students Hugh Counsell, Anna Brown, Haley Stauffacher, and Taylor Payne recently traveled to Atlanta, GA for DECA's International Career Development Conference.  While there they competed with students from around the world in Marketing and Selling events.  They also had time to take in some sights including the World of Coca-Cola museum, a CNN Studio Tour, and the Georgia Aquarium.
Skills USA Competition News
Seven  Students competed at the State SkillsUSA Comp etition  held at the Aliant Energy Center.  SkillsUSA is a Career and Tech Ed Co-curricular activity where students can compete in 60+ career fields.  This year we had two teams of students competing in Team Engineering Challenge and one student competing in Architectural Drafting.  Students in the Team Engineering Challenge were given 8 hours to design, construct and present their solution for a small scale All-terrain vehicle that needed to run a gauntlet course of varying terrain.  These students gained great experience using the design process, implemented problem solving and material allocation in this highly competitive event.
Connor Eason competed in Architectural Drafting redesigning the first floor of a commercial building using the CAD program Autodesk Revit.  Connor earned 1st place overall and will be representing MGHS an
d the State of Wisconsin in Architectural Drafting at the national competition in Louisville, KY June 25-29th.  This is a great way to end his senior year and we wish him luck and skill as he chases his dreams.
