Parenting Through COVID-19

I hope you are safe and well.

We are in the middle of a crisis like none any of us have experienced in our lifetimes.  Everyone is freaking out. Kids are home but can't go out. Schools have closed but school work continues. You can't find bananas in the grocery store. There are stacks of toilet paper in the corner of the living room. Kids have questions! And, kids have a knack for asking the very questions you don't have answer for or don't know HOW to answer. "What is COVID-19?" "Am I going to die?" "Why aren't we going to school?" "Why can't my friends come over?" How you talk to your kids about this pandemic will be a significant factor in their level of stress. It will also set the stage for how they deal with the ongoing effects of COVID-19 and it's economic effects over the next 1-2 years.

Weekly Columns

My colleague Stacy Jagger, LMFT, RPT-S and I are writing a column for the Williamson Home Page publications to help parents explain to their kids what is happening as well as how to deal with the various challenges of having kids home for the next several months. We will be giving suggestions and advice about setting up schedules, dealing with bored and irritable kids, continuing their schoolwork from home, keeping them occupied, maintaining friendships and social connections, managing and monitoring screen time and taking care of yourself so you can take care of their kids.

Columns will be published on Mondays and Thursdays.  They will also show up on my website on those days.

Two of our columns have already been published.
You can check them out (and consider subscribing to the Williamson Home Page publications since ad revenues are WAY down)

Each column will also be posted on the There's A Stranger In My House blog located on my webpage www.drjameswellborn.com

And I will also be providing updates and additional resources on my twitter account @JamesGWellborn.

Blog Posts

Finally, there is even more information to help you and your family get through all this located in the other blog on my site The Blog including specific questions and answers your kids and teens will be asking as well as more unconventional ideas like movies about isolation to watch with your teens (with important lessons like stop talking or aliens will kill you from The Quiet Place and more!).

Hope you find some of this useful.

Hug your kids, often (regardless of how much they hate it).  And tell them you love them.

Though it may be odd to hear me say it, keep your distance from people.  Wear your masks.

And remember, we can only really survive by looking out for each other.
Be kind. Be generous. Be safe.
