WTS Member Spotlight Klein

Name - Lori Klein, WTS NC Triangle Chapter Social Media Chair

Place of Work / How Long - Quest Corporation of America since June 2018

Title - Business Unit Leader

When did you join WTS? - Fall 2018

Why did you join WTS? - I joined because Angela Cobb (president of WTS NC Triangle Chapter) encouraged me to, and because the upcoming events planned at that moment were too awesome to pass up: a Community Service project to benefit InterAct coupled with a Trolley Pub ride planned by Tina Sekula from JMT. WTS events have continued to inspire me, and I have met some really smart and accomplished women (and even a few men. Yes, guys, you are welcome at WTS!)

What do you like best about your job? - I love that my role enables me to provide necessary public input / outreach and support to engineers, consulting firms and agencies.  It's exciting to be part of the story of how our communities and transportation are evolving, and to be a conduit to the public so their voices are part of the story, also.

Hometown (City, State) - New York, N.Y.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself - I lived in NYC, Boston, Istanbul and New Orleans before settling in North Carolina in the early 2000s.  I find North Carolina beautiful and friendly with a bit of everything from the mountains and coastlines to the edgy cities and small town experiences. Since moving to N.C., I founded a business called RightTime KiDS and then franchised it. At the time it was one of a very small handful of North Carolina-based franchise systems. I'm excited to be bringing my energy and focus to marketing, communications and public engagement for the transportation industry in N.C.

WTS NC Triangle Book (Movie) Club

Instead of a book selection this month, we have a couple of transportation-related movie recommendations, both available on streaming platforms. The first is " Lionheart," currently available on Netflix. The movie tells the story of Adaeze Obiagu (portrayed by Genevieve Nnaji), who wants to substitute for her father, Ernest Obiagu ( Pete Edochie), when he can no longer run his Nigerian bus company due to health issues. Her father, however, asks his brother Godswill ( Nkem Owoh) to substitute for him, and Godswill and Adaeze have to work hard together to save the company from a huge debt and to not lose the company to the businessman Igwe Pascal ( Kanayo O. Kanayo).

The second movie is " Pick of the Litter," currently available on Hulu (subscription). This documentary follows a litter of puppies from the moment they're born and begin their quest to become guide dogs for the blind. Cameras follow these pups through an intense two-year odyssey as they train to become dogs whose ultimate responsibility is to protect their blind partners from harm. Along the way, the dogs rely on a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing, life-changing things in the service of their humans. Viewers also learn how blind people navigate the world and why accessibility in transportation is so important.

We will feature a book (or movie) each month recommended by our members for our members. If you want to recommend a book (or movie) for this space, send the suggestion to Leslie Tracey, newsletter editor.

Featured Business - Moffatt & Nichol, Patron Partner

As a trusted partner for our transportation clients throughout the region for almost four decades, Moffatt & Nichol offers services that leverage our transportation and coastal engineering expertise with resiliency specialists in our Southeast and Gulf offices to guide clients through project planning and design equipped for future environmental challenges.

Unique to the region are the many bridges that cross rivers, sounds, inlets or the Intracoastal Waterway, which means these structures are at greater risk to the impacts of scour and overtopping as storm surges strengthen and rise. From covered bridges off narrow state routes to the elegant sweep of the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge, Moffatt & Nichol has the privilege of contributing to transportation improvements where land meets water, throughout the region.

We cannot stop a hurricane, but we can plan ahead through resilient design. At Moffatt & Nichol our project approach is multidisciplinary, allowing us to provide clients with a high level added value for project development or program management, from planning and design to construction. This approach is especially meaningful for resiliency and water-related transportation issues, involving deep foundations, vessel impact, scour analyses, and seismic analysis and design. On the planning side, Moffatt & Nichol has participated in and led preparation of planning documents such as feasibility studies, Programmatic Categorical Exclusions, Categorical Exclusions, Environmental Assessment, and Environmental Impact Statements-and most importantly, stakeholder engagement.

We look forward to seeing you at WTS NC Triangle! To find out more about our resiliency services, please contact Lynette Cardoch at [email protected], or Mike Robinson at [email protected].
