May is National Water Safety Month
Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 14. With National Water Safety Month in May and summer around the corner, it's a great time for parents to remember the importance of ensuring their children are equipped with essential water safety skills.
In our Y Splash program, we teach every second grader in Roanoke City, Roanoke County and Salem City how to be safe in and around the water. The Y Splash program is a proven method for teaching children fundamental water safety skills. Children take part in six, 45-minute instructional sessions that will reduce the risk of drowning and give children confidence in and around water.
Also, the Kirk Family YMCA offers youth swim lessons year round towards reducing the risk of childhood drowning, instilling a lifelong love of swimming and educating children on safety around different water environments.
Teaching children how to be safe around water is one of the most important life skills the YMCA can provide. It not only saves lives, it builds confidence.
