ALAS! AND DID MY SAVIOR BLEED
Alas! And did my Savior bleed and did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I?
As we enter the last three weeks of the Lenten Season, we especially remember the suffering that our Lord endured during those last days. The prophet Isaiah prophesied about the Messiah to come and the pain he would endure:
Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53: 4-6
Isaac Watts was a great hymn writer that lived (1674-1748). His hymn Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed, certainly has touched the hearts of many throughout the years. After drawing stark contrasts between the sacrificial death of our mighty Maker and the unworthiness of the sinful creature, he concludes with the consecration "Here, Lord, I give myself away- Tis all that I can do." A thirty year- old blind woman heard a revival choir sing this simple hymn. Stanza after stanza stirred her heart, but when the choir came to the final line "Here, Lord, I give myself away," she gave herself to the Lord as well. That blind woman was Fanny Crosby, who went on to become a great writer of gospel hymns. We never know how deeply our lives will touch the lives of others.
But drops of grief can ne'er repay The debt of love I owe;
Here Lord, I give myself away- "Tis all that I can do.
May the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross touch your life in a mighty way as we prepare for the celebration of His resurrection on Easter Sunday April 21!

Prepare Your Heart for Easter
This Good Friday, April 19, 2019 take a walk in Jesus' sandals with Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church! Our church community is preparing a representation of Christ's Journey to the Cross. The Friday before Easter, otherwise known as Good Friday, is a day set aside to remind ourselves of not only Jesus' suffering, but of his great love for us. Easter, as the celebration of Jesus' resurrection, is meaningless without Christ's death on the cross. Come, take a journey to the cross, and let the joy of Easter come alive in your heart!
That evening, your journey will begin at the church office entrance. This is the only entrance that will be open at that time. As you enter, you will receive a written guide that will include scriptures and prayers that correspond to each classroom that you enter. All the rooms will be set up to depict a different station of Christ's Journey. The stations start with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and end with his burial. Your journey will culminate with everyone in the Sanctuary with short reflections on the cross and music. The music will be provided by the Higgins Music Department and special guests.
Helpful Hints: Please arrive between 6:00 and 6:15 to start the first portion (1-9) of your journey through the stations. If you feel that you would like to spend a good amount of time in each station to prepare your heart then come earlier. Enter the church through the church office entrance under the breezeway. Keep this in mind as you find parking. The second portion (10-14) of the stations will be in the Sanctuary. If you finish the first portion quickly you will have time to reflect on what you have seen before the start of the second portion.
Children are welcome! A separate children's guide will be provided to help parent's guide young ones along the way. Each station will include a sticker for children to collect in their guide.
The Journey is handicap accessible.

For the second year, we will offering stations for families to journey through on Easter morning from 10:00 to 11:00. There will be four stations and the kids will make a craft to take with them at each station, while they learn about what Easter means for us today. Please invite families to join us.

Higgins Vacation Bible School - The Incredible Race!
July 22-26, 5:30-8:30
Kids and youth will discover that, no matter where we live, what shade of skin we have, or what language we speak, we are all part of the same race-the human race, and that we are all called to be part of one family - God's Family. We will discover how to join God's Family as we race from continent to continent learning about different cultures.
We will need lots of help. Last year we had 50 kids each evening. Dinner will be included again this year and we would love to offer a different ethnic cuisine each evening. Please put it on your calendars and plan to use your wonderful talents, skills and loving hearts to bless the children of our community and help them to know and love Jesus.

Celebrate Recovery

| Celebrate Recovery at Higgins - We are in the planning stages to bring Celebrate Recovery to our Church. Come join us with this world-wide, Jesus centered recovery program for addiction. Since being launched 25 years ago at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church, millions have been able to find real recovery. At present there is no Christian outreach in Yancey County for drug and alcohol addiction. Opioid overdose is now the number 1 cause of death of people under the age of 50. Some of you have been interested in helping either as sponsors, worship support, or attendants for a service. Awakening the Buddha in You
Apparently we have come into the windy, chilly rainy season. And perfect for this weather are Jan Karon books. Sitting in a cozy chair by a warming fire while the rain falls and the wind blows, what could be better? Newly arrived to our shelves are the two latest in the Mitford novels Time has passed, Father Tim is very slowly adjusting to retirement. Dooley has married and he too, is adjusting to an adult life establishing an occupation, a marriage, and parenthood.
Actually, I've begun the last book first. I recommend you read them in proper order - the marriage then the adjustments. First;
"COME RAIN or COME SHINE"
So this book will be all about the wedding of Dooley Kavanagh to Lacey Harper. Dooley has graduated Vet training and is establishing his country animal clinic. Money is tight and they are having a simple, inexpensive wedding. One cost cutter is having a Potluck instead of a catered meal for their post wedding. As an aside, our oldest daughter did that too. (In her case the wedding was on a friends farm and instead of wedding gifts she asked for the potluck). Things in Mitford are always cozy and friendly, moving along in an easy manner while not being like anywhere else.

Life is very busy for the young couple, most of us remember, fondly, when money was tight and we managed to work it all out and look back at that time with a smile..
This is where they are and also in the process of adopting a preschooler so there is a lot of adjusting going on here. All the while the various inhabitants of Mitford are working out the dramas of every day trials and blessings. Much humor and no small amount of tender moments. Many of us think we are living in a town that could be called Mitford, but the name of Burnsville suits us best!
