Westshore Area Interchange Secures $1.4 Billion
The new Westshore Interchange will finally become a reality after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation announced that the project secured $1.4 billion in funding during the 2023-24 cycle as part of FDOT's five-year work program. Construction could take between four or five years.

In addition to new lanes and express lanes on State Road 60 and Interstate 275, the project will include a dedicated transit corridor between Westshore and Downtown Tampa, and new connections at Reo, Occident, and Trask Streets, where the streets currently dead-end into the interstate. Those three new north-south connections will facilitate Complete Streets improvements on West Shore Blvd. and Lois Ave. These improvements can occur during construction of the larger interchange. For more information, visit the Westshore Interchange project page or the FDOT work plan.

TRANSPORTATION & PLANNINGTransportation
Transit between Downtown and Westshore included in Mayor's transportation recommendations
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor released the first of several reports she commissioned since her election in May 2019. The first to be released was the Transportation Advisory Team's report  that included several recommended policy and project changes, including a dedicated right-of-way transit study for service between Downtown and Westshore. Unlike the multiple studies connecting Downtown to the north and east, there are currently no feasibility studies for Downtown to Westshore. Funding for a bus rapid transit study from Tampa International Airport to the east was reallocated in 2018 to a bus rapid transit study of the Florida Avenue corridor.

The report suggests that Mayor Castor promote greenways and trails as transportation options. In September, the City's budget and All For Transportation project list included two greenways from our Westshore Transportation Action Plan: Grady Ave. trail construction, and Gray St. Bicycle Boulevard study. Other projects include resurfacing Rocky Point Dr. and Westshore neighborhood streets, and improvements to Himes Ave. and O'Brien St.
