Thanks to our custodians; Gamage and Dennis for their wonderful support of our after hours events and our Campus Improvement day with the firetruck. Thanks to all the teachers and staff that took on the challenge to write grants, suggest changes, think of new ideas for the school, we love innovation!

Golden Acorn Winners
Thank you
to everyone who made a nomination for the Golden Acorn Award. We received a record number of nominations from across the community. Your kind tributes to members of the IS community were wonderful. Two nominations stood out from the others, please join us in congratulating the 2018 recipients of the Golden Acorn,
Sally Fouche and Sue Bensten.
Please join us Tuesday, June 19 at 8:15AM at the ISPTSA meeting for the presentation of their awards.
Sally Fouche
One nomination captured the spirit of Sally and the work she has done at the International School as a parent, volunteer and staff member, "Sally is a force of nature. She has worked tirelessly to make IS a more upbeat, nurturing and academically challenging school." It was frequently mentioned that she is a champion for IS, advocating for students and working to provide a strong community and learning environment for all. Sally has committed countless hours and more than 20 years in the service of students, teachers and other staff in the public schools. She has been an art docent, field trip chaperone including HS retreat, facilitated German exchange, Cooking Club, College Boot camp and essay writing, Bite of IS, the 20th-anniversary celebration, ASB advisor, doing community outreach to bring new diverse students to IS, staff luncheons, graduation committees and Random Acts of Fun, where she set up volleyball nets, brought beach balls, filled a kiddie pool with water and set out lounge chairs, so the kids could relax. Sally is always willing to tackle any challenge she hears about with a positive can-do attitude. Focus Week and Senior Project are a unique part of the IS experience and neither would be what they are today without the efforts of Sally. For Focus Week, Sally "has contributed countless hours and bottomless energy to support our staff in creating an education, stimulating and budget-conscious Focus Week." She has also spent many hours recruiting board day judges and then thoughtfully placing those judges with the right students. While students might not have had confidence in themselves, Sally always had complete confidence in them. "She has served as friend, adviser, counselor, surrogate parent, cheerleader and advocate for countless students," another nomination said. "She is a woman of great integrity and kindness. Everyone's lives are touched and supported by all she does." Sally has had 3 children graduate from the International School. Her youngest child graduated in 2016.
Sue Bentsen
S
ue has had a significant positive influence on the students, teachers
and
staff of the International School since she joined the International School community in 2007. As one IS alumni wrote, "Sue was the one parent that was always there from 6th grade. She volunteered at all the class events, band nights, with the PTSA, middle school PE program, grad committees, in the office..her presence and parent volunteer leadership were constant all the years I was there." For several years, Sally and Sue were partners in shaping and improving Focus Week so that students would have engaging and interesting Focus Weeks options. They also partnered on the school 20th-anniversary celebration bringing together an amazing flash mob and being ASB advisors when the ASB needed additional mentorship and guidance. Sue is always there to lend a helping hand with a sense of humor, true empathy and no drama. From helping to organize the 6th grade retreats, to PTSA volunteer roles including the grants committee and graduation committees, to volunteering her talents to enhance the drama productions, to running IBoost, the now-defunct IS Booster Club to supporting IJazz band and choir, to judging Senior Board Day, Sue has dedicated countless hours to supporting students and programs at International School. Sue performs many small acts of kindness from providing freshly baked food for the office to arranging volunteers to bring lunch for the staff when she knows that "breaking bread together" would benefit the staff. Sue not only volunteers her own time and energy, according to one nomination, "she has inspired all of us to consider how we can step up our own community volunteerism game." Sue does not seek recognition for her efforts but is always there to lend dependable expertise and support. Sue (and Brent) have had 3 children attend IS. Her youngest sons are graduating in 2018.

CLASSROOM PRIVACY SHADES INSTALLED
We would like to thank Minal Shah for leading the effort to install almost 50 privacy shades on the doors at IS, using a blackout material that can be rolled up and down. Minal created and led this project from last year thru this year, and had various people volunteer to sew and install. PTSA provided the funds for the material. We would like to thank the following volunteers; Kris & Robert Laserna, Joanie Chang, Cindy Lu and her daughter Laura Zhang, Minal & Kanan Shah, Meribeth and moms of Scout troop 673 including Cat (Catherine) Snyder, Sarah Rahmel (also an IS parent) Allison Davis, Lisa Engeldingel and her niece Jennifer. Thanks for your persistence Minal.

FINAL DONATIONS FOR THE 2017-2018 YEAR NEEDED
Help us Finish in the Black!
All donations raised as part of this fundraising effort directly pay for 2018-2019 curriculum enhancement, student activities support, and so much more. Due to two events that did not occur this year, our expenses are less than budgeted, but we need an additional donation of $6000 to finish our year in the black.
We are asking for a $50 per person donation to complete our budget and set up our budget for spending right away in Fall of 2018. Two months after school starts, PTSA is already paying $30,000 for curriculum enrichment. All donations are tax deductible and we accept corporate matching. All donations need to be submitted
by
June 22nd. Click
here to donate or cash/check dropped off at the office. Thank you for your financial support of PTSA.

BACK TO BUSINESS DAY SCHEDULE, WEDNESDAY 8/15
6th Grade: 8:00 am
7th Grade: 9:00 am
8th Grade: 10:00 am
9th Grade: 11:00 am
10th - 12th Grades: 12:00
Ends at 2:00 pm
We do not mail home packets in the summer. Families are expected to download all the forms and information from our website at
www.bsd405.org/international. The website will be updated and ready to go by August 1st. There will not be copies of the forms available at school so
please print them out in advance and bring the completed copies with you. Included online will be a document for you to see what the fees are by grade so you will know what to expect. The lines to pay fees can be very long but you can beat the lines by paying on line at
https://touchbase.bsd405.org/.
Again, please note that you start paying on August 1st. However, if you don’t mind the lines, you may pay in the main office or at the attendance window. We now take credit cards, checks and cash! We can only do one transaction per student so you will need at least one check per student to pay for class fees.
At Back to Business day your student will get their schedule, PE lock, be assigned a locker, receive an ORCA card to ride the Metro Bus (if eligible), have their photo taken, and pay fees.
If you can’t make it to Back to Business Day, we have two mini Back to Business Dates and Times.
We ask that you try to make it to one of these options. If you are unable to make these times, please call 425-456-6500 after August 1st to set up an appointment. Please do not just drop into the office. You will be able to take care of most things that are available except for getting your photo taken. The photographer will be back at school on Tuesday, Oct. 2nd for picture retakes and for students who were not able to make it on August 15th.
The mini Back to Business Days are:
Tuesday, Aug. 21 from 9-11 am
Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 5-7 pm
Have a great summer!

THANK YOU PARENT VOLUNTEERS!
Thank you for helping to support and honor the Class of 2018!
As you may know each June, as our Senior Class prepares to graduate, the community of IS joins together to help support the celebrations that are part of this special time. This allows the families of our graduating seniors the ability to focus on celebrating their graduates and also gives parents from other grades a chance to see what’s ahead! We are so very grateful for the contributions each grade makes to the culminating graduation events:
Underclassmen Grade Level Support:
• 6th Grade Families: Host box lunch for seniors on Senior Project Board Day. (Students present Senior Project portfolio and 15 minute speech to a panel of 3 expert judges.)
• 10th Grade Families: Host light lunch the day of Graduation Rehearsal.
• 7th & 11th Grade Families: Host Graduation Reception following the
Commencement ceremony:
• 8th & 9th Grade Families: Host Baccalaureate Reception. Baccalaureate is a non-religious event held prior to graduation at an off-campus site with special recognition for each graduating senior.
We wish to extend an extra note of gratitude to the following parents who so generously, agreed to help in coordinating these special events:
Lori Hunt
Brenda Bedrosian
Michelle Surkan
Meribeth Nordloef
Lily Tan
Molly Kihanya
Andrea Wohlan
On behalf of the Class of 2018 and their families,
Thank you!

COMING SOON: ONLINE STUDENT DATA VERIFICATION
The
Synergy Online Student Verification Project Team announced a new way for families to update student demographic forms and school nurse health information forms in Synergy. This is a natural extension of what families have already become accustomed to doing in the new software this year -- such as accessing grades, attendance, teachers' messages and other school-related information -- to contribute to students' academic success.
On
Aug. 6, Bellevue School District will launch
Online Student Data Verification via ParentVUE. In addition to student demographic data, parents and guardians can update their contact information, as well as edit, update and add emergency contacts, and upload documents to submit to their student's school(s). Parents of students at multiple schools can complete and submit the verification of their student information at one time.
The verification process can be completed on any web enabled device, at any time via the district website (this process is currently not available via the ParentVUE app). Kiosks will be available at all 29 schools, plus 3 kiosks at the BSD Student Placement office where parents and guardians can also verify this information via ParentVUE. Training guides with how-to instructions for families will be available online and at the BSD Kiosks at the time of launch. Paper format will still be available for families who prefer that method.
By updating student's data, we can communicate academic progress to the appropriate contacts, distribute important information as needed, contact families in emergency situations, and respond to a medical situation appropriately. It's important to ensure that all information is current, accurate and complete.

We have a few leadership roles to fill including Gratitudes and Thank Yous and Commencement.

PAPERLESS OPTION FOR REPORT CARDS
You can choose to receive your student’s report card through student view and not have a paper copy sent to you.
When you log into ParentVue, click the “my Account” tab at the top of the screen and then check the box to Only Receive report cards online.
Each parent has to check the box in their account in you don’t want printed report cards sent to you.
