May is a busy month! To me it's a month that's dedicated to honoring
our Graduates,
our Mothers, and our Heroes.
Today, my facebook feed was filled with Moms all over Hoisington posting about their graduating seniors and how today is their last day of High School. These posts were filled with pictures of their child's first day of school, middle school years and finally one last shot of them getting into their car heading off to school this morning. This is a happy time filled with lots of tears - tears of joy, tears of sadness and even tears of fear. As a parent, who has been at this point several times over, I can tell you that you are filled with such joy at their accomplishment for graduating, and at your own accomplishment for living through their teen years. But, then there is much sadness as the door of their childhood is closing and they are moving on, away from you, away from your safety net and that is where the fear comes in. They are flying the coop, going off to college or a job and by society's standards will be considered an adult despite the fact that you will always think of them as your baby. There will be expectations that they will need to live up to, accomplishments they need to achieve and goals they will need to strive for, that you, as their parent will not be able to help them with. That is what it means to be an adult. But, that does not mean we are not there to support them in every right move they make, every accomplishment they achieve and every goal they attain. Our support in those endeavors will be easy but never more needed than when they make the wrong choices, fail to complete a goal, or change their life's course completely. The job of parenting does not end with a High School Diploma but instead morphs into a new realm that hopefully will be as their friend. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure many of you consider your child to be your friend and vise versa but the difference here is that as they grow older and wiser, they will begin to see you more as a friend than just a parent. This will not happen overnight, they have much to learn but one day you will wake up when they are in their mid-twenties and think - wow, they really are listening to my advice now and that's when you'll know that the friendship between you and your child is no longer one that is bound by your role at their parent but instead out of respect for who you are as a person and the life experience that you bring to the table.
This month is also when we honor our Mothers, our Grandmothers and all those special women that filled the role as a mother for us. I always look at my mother as someone that was strong and she had to be as she raised seven children on her own after my parents divorced when I was three. When our house burned down a few years later, I saw her cry for the first time and as a young child that scared me because it meant she was not indestructible. But with that said, she rebuilt and started her life over and with hard work made a home for my siblings and I. Our life was never easy and we knew what it meant to be poor, to have the lights turned off, to need food stamps and to have free lunch at school. My mother was proud and did what she needed to do to provide for us but she worked hard, 2 or 3 jobs at a time so she did not need government support. I remember how proud she was to tell her brother that she was finally supporting her family completely on her own with no help from the welfare system. Today, my mother is still strong and fighting against ailing health problems that she has been fraught with over the last few months. I am proud to say that she has taught me about overcoming adversity, the valleys that life throws our ways and most importantly to love my children through it all. Happy Mother's Day Mom!
Lastly, we close out the month by honoring our Veterans. I am proud to say that my dad was in the Army, my brother was in the Army, my husband was in the Army and now my oldest son, AJ is serving in the Army as a Combat Medic. The men and women that have served in our Armed Forces, whether it be in times of War or Peace, should be commended for their commitment and dedication to fighting for our Nation and it's people. Our soldiers that have lost their lives in these endeavors are some of the ones that we will remember and honor this Memorial Day. It is because of them that we still have a country where democracy rules and freedom rings loud and clear. Thank you all that have served or are serving our Country now.
Sincerely,
Karen Baldyga,
