Solar power pioneer and motivational speaker John Boiano invites you to join a peaceful revolution by taking the mystery out of going solar.

The solar movement is a peaceful revolution, giving us the reigns to take control of how we access our energy and the amount that we pay for it.

We live in challenging times. Mother Earth is hanging in there, waiting for our commitment to jump into action as peaceful warriors on the path of preserving a healthy and vibrant planet. And fortunately, we are at the perfect time in history to take peaceful, but powerful revolutionary action as individuals - simply by changing how we access our energy and installing solar at our homes, businesses and farms.

We the people can revolutionize the world! Bill Nye, The Science Guy, believes that with today's technology, we could be using 80% renewable energy worldwide by 2050.

Please join us for this engaging and inter-active workshop as Solar Power Pioneer and Motivational Speaker John Boiano offers insights, challenges and solutions into the 21 most asked questions about installing solar energy at your home, small business or farm.

Please bring your questions and let's have some fun talking about accessing the most powerful energy source in the universe!

Chamber of Central Mass South Awards Scholarships
to Three Local Scholars
Scholarship Winners
Julia Ferron                                  Jiliana Marrero                               Erika Quesada

The Chamber of Central Mass South is very pleased to announce the winners of the Chamber Scholarships for 2018. This year, three scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to three local students upon successful completion of their first semester of college with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

"This is a highly competitive scholarship," said Chamber Executive Director Alexandra McNitt. "We received applications from all but one of the high schools in our catchment, and our selection committee worked hard to identify the most deserving students. All applicants have great grades and involvement at their respective schools. What sets these three students apart is their level of community engagement. These young women have already made a positive impact on their community."

This year's $1000 scholarship recipients are Julia Ferron and Erika E. Quesada, both graduates of Southbridge High School, and Jiliana Marrero, a graduate of Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Julia Ferron, of Southbridge, is an exceptional student, a gifted artist and dancer. Julia was a member of the National Honor Society, the Art Honor Society and served as Class President through her sophomore, junior and senior years. During her tenure at Southbridge High School, Julia has given tirelessly of herself and demonstrated leadership within the school and our community. Julia has worked as a summer camp counselor with the Southbridge Recreation Department and an assistant dance instructor at Spotlight Dance Academy. Active in her community, Julia has volunteered at Relay for Life since 2009, the Southbridge Police Department, Holiday Visions, and the Lions Club among others. Julia ranked second academically in her graduating class. Passionate about art, Julia is a talented photographer, painter and sketch artist and hopes to major in illustration.

Jiliana Marrero, of Southbridge, is a wonderful example of a good citizen who is committed to academics and her community. With an impressive transcript from Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School and outstanding grades, Chelsea was active in Student Council where she was vice president, the Class Steering Committee, Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and the National Honor Society. Hard-working and committed, Jiliana has truly made a difference in our community. She was the recipient of the Community Service Hours Award for volunteering over 100 hours in one year. Jiliana is now a Certified Nursing Assistant and Home Health aide, an active member of the Charlton Police Explorers and she works as a Dietary Aid at Harrington Hospital. With the goal of working in the medical field, Jiliana plans to major in biology.

Erika E. Quesada, of Southbridge, is a motivated and focused student who has dedicated much of her energy and resources to her school and community. In her senior year at Southbridge High School, Erika was president of the Student Council and president of the school's National Honor Society. Smart, driven, organized and a great participator, Erika has been on the varsity cheer squad, varsity tennis and volleyball teams. She has won the Anna Maria College Book Award, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, a DECA award and a HACE (Hispanics Achieving and Celebrating Excellence) award. During her senior year, Erika was dual enrolled with Southbridge High and Quinsigamond Community College where she continued to achieve at the highest level and made QCC's Dean's List. Through her National Honor Society commitment, Erika is a frequent volunteer in our community. Academically, Erika ranked fifth in her graduating class. She intends to major in accounting.

The Chamber is extremely gratified to be able to contribute to the ongoing education and success of these exceptional young scholars and we wish them the very best as they pursue their academic ambitions. The Chamber of Central Mass South typically offers three $1000 scholarships to local students each year. Monies are allocated from the Chamber's Charities and Scholarship Fund which is supported by the annual 'Your Chance to Be a Millionaire' lottery scratch tickets raffle, the Chamber's Golf Classic and individual contributions from Chamber Members. Scholarship applications can be obtained at local high school guidance offices or online at the Chamber website. The annual deadline to apply is April 1.

Post-Event, Harrington's Security Efforts Represent Industry Champion
for Workplace Safety
HealthCare System Leads Commonwealth in Workplace Violence Prevention Program
Public Safety

It took just three weeks after the events of June 14, 2017 for Harrington to be the first hospital in the Commonwealth to install metal detectors at its Southbridge and Webster Emergency Department (ED) entrances.

The decision was made after long-time Harrington Nurse Elise Wilson was randomly stabbed by a patient in the Southbridge Emergency Department triage room. The event not only shook the Harrington staff and community but rippled across the industry nationwide, as workplace violence and vulnerable frontline healthcare providers became the focus of many conversations.

Wilson survived, thanks to the quick and competent work by Harrington Emergency Department physicians, nurses, staff and Southbridge Fire and EMS personnel, in addition to the professional medical providers at UMass. Within a few weeks,  Wilson went on to be a spokesperson for nurse and workplace safety, being interviewed by local and national television shows.

A year later, Harrington and UMass are the only central Massachusetts organizations to have metal detectors in place within their EDs, and potentially the only two in the state, based on research local media has conducted.

The metal detectors are just one element that makes up a well-rounded approach to workplace violence prevention the healthcare system has worked hard to implement over the past year.

"Our employees', visitors' and patients' safety and security are a top priority. We are continuously improving our systems and processes to provide secure and practical solutions," said Harry Lemieux, Harrington's vice president of support services and chief information.

The organization has installed panic buttons and alarm systems at almost all its off-site locations. In addition, Harrington installed more security cameras, increased the number of areas within the hospital that are card-access only and has collaborated with local municipalities on training for aggressive behavior.

Other measures over the past year include progressive training for the Harrington's Public Safety Department, who now don new uniforms and carry handcuffs. The Public Safety Department has also increased the number of staff per shift.

Harrington has hosted several visits and served as a resource to hospitals throughout the Commonwealth and beyond who have expressed interest in enhancing security measures.

Last December, Lemieux represented Harrington as the keynote speaker at the Boston Chapter of the International Association for Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) hosted at Newton Wellesley Hospital. At the conference, Lemieux shared Harrington's experiences and outlined the various enhancements implemented across the healthcare system.

Harrington will commemorate the events of last summer by recognizing Elise Wilson, and members of the Harrington family, at a ceremony Thursday, June 14, one year to the day of the 2017 attack, at its Southbridge campus. The brief program is expected to begin at 11 a.m. outside the Southbridge Emergency Department.

Don't forget Harrington's A Fare to Remember, on July 14 at Mechanics Hall.

The campus of OFS, on Hall Road in Sturbridge, will be going completely smoke-free as of July 1. These two, 12-foot octagonal gazebos served as "smoke shacks" for OFS employees but they can be yours free if you are able to transport them safely from OFS to your home or business. They are wired for lights and really worth seeing if you have the space. Available for pick up after July 1. Interested? Contact Jocelyn at jcallis@ofsoptics.com for more information.

Hunchback of Notre Dame
THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Book by Peter Parnell, Directed by Kevin McGerigle
Music Director Leah Marley, Choreographer Jackie McGerigle
June 8 - 24

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film's Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell's new book features verbatim passages from Hugo's gothic novel.  The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be "Out There," observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn't the only one captivated by her free spirit, though - the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies - and it's up to Quasimodo to save them all.   A sweeping score and powerful story make The Hunchback of Notre Dame an instant classic.  Audiences will be swept away by the magic of this truly unforgettable musical.
Presented by Special Arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Are Habits That Don't Serve You Holding You Back?
Then it's time to Change Your Habitudes . . .
Tuesday, June 19, 2018, 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Sturbridge, MA

Negative thinking patterns can limit the quality of life you desire.
Learn how to transcend those limitations to achieve your goals and get
to that next level in your life.

At an early age we developed emotional habits and patterns - Habitudes- that influence how we perceive and move through our lives. Some Habitudes serve us, others do not. Regardless, these Habitudes determine the outcomes in our lives.

"Rita is a gifted speaker with a heart for helping others in their growth process. Her focus on personal fulfillment as a worthwhile goal is refreshing." Laurie Nelson, Attendee, Habitudes 2.0 Workshop, April 2018

So how do we change these Habitudes that do not serve us? How do we make the shift towards positive thoughts and actions? By exploring, breaking down, and understanding the Habitude process.

Change Your Habitudes 2.0 will:
  • Examine habit formation and its effect on behavior
  • Help you uncover the Negative Habitudes holding you back
  • Examine key decisions that direct your actions
  • Explore core beliefs and the choices that may not be serving you
  • Offer strategies for releasing those negative thought patterns
"Opened my eyes for my future projects. Very interesting and informative." Joan Campanale, Attendee, Habitudes 2.0 Workshop, April 2018

You will also learn how to break the negative Habitude cycle through reframing using the process of Strategic Goal Mapping - a creative and graphic goal-mapping technique.

Strategic Goal Mapping (SGM) is a system I developed that incorporates the highly effective graphic technique of mind-mapping with a Habitude analysis action plan. By mapping out your Habitudes in a visual way, you connect thoughts, emotions and behaviors around a central goal and create an action plan that works.

"I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and highly recommend it to anyone feeling stuck or ready to make changes in their life...
The genuineness of presentation; [Rita's] passion and energy is inspiring." Kristina LeDuc, attendee, Change Your Habitudes, Change Your Life Workshop, October 2017

Quaboag Historical Society's Music at the Museum
Museum
June 30, 11:00am to 2:30pm

A fun afternoon can be had by all at the Quaboag Historical Society Museum, 27 Front Street in West Brookfield on Saturday, June 30 from 11:00-2:30. The local band, the Outlanders, composed of Rick and Janet Baskowski with special guest Bob Zabielski on upright bass and flute. Rick and Janet will be picking and strumming away, Rick on his banjo and Janet on guitar.

"This is something we've been looking forward to for a long time. Not only do we want to provide good music but we want people to have a chance to see the museum and learn more about the Society, what we do and how we do it," says Co-president Amy Dugas.

The museum has many wonderful exhibits and interesting artifacts from throughout the six Plantation towns from Native American items that are thousands of years old to those from business and industry and all things related to Lucy Stone, a pioneer in the struggle for women's rights.

The Outlanders will play from 12:00-2:00 and food and refreshments will be served. There is no cost to attend.

"The six towns making up the Plantation area," says Co-president Ed Londergan, "New Braintree, Warren, North Brookfield, Brookfield, West Brookfield and East Brookfield, have a long and fascinating history. The area was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, settled by the English in 1665-353 years ago-and was a center for business, industry and recreation for many years."

The Quaboag Historical Society was begun in 1895, by a group of residents of the original Quaboag area who saw the need for preservation of its history and artifacts. The Executive Board works to maintain interest in the Society and the Museum. Additionally, it promotes an interest in Quaboag Plantation's beginning and continuing existence.

The museum is open every other Saturday and by appointment. Reference materials are available, artifacts are on display, and attendance and participation are welcomed.
Fourth of July and The Charlotte's Web Experience
July 4
Old Sturbridge Village

Independence: Fourth of July
An old-fashioned good time will be had by all on Independence Day at Old Sturbridge Village. Visitors will have the chance to take part in a citizens' parade, play 19th-century style "baseball," march with the militia, make a tri-cornered hat, and sign their "John Hancocks" on a giant copy of the Declaration of Independence. Summer barbecue food will be available for purchase along with beer and wine; visitors may also enjoy a picnic on the Common. Children and families will especially enjoy a little physical activity and friendly competition with  "Farm Yard Games."
An exciting feature of the Independence Day festivities is the firing of a reproduction cannon. The cannon has been in production for a few years and is a working model of a "Heavy 3-Pounder," meant to fire 3-pound balls. The cast-iron cannon barrel was made in the 1970s by the LaPans Foundry in Hudson Falls, New York, and purchased by Old Sturbridge Village a few years ago.
Watch and be inspired by a citizen naturalization ceremony on the Village Common. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will present scores of candidates to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and they will pledge their Oath of Allegiance to the United States for the very first time. Old Sturbridge Village Singers will perform patriotic songs during the ceremony.

"Declaring Independence" Returns
Two times during the day, six costumed re-enactors will render the words of the Declaration line by line, assisted by a narrator who sets these words in their rich historical context. Some lines will be familiar to all; others - especially the many grievances that justified altering an ancient government - will receive background and commentary. As the re-enactors dramatize these 18th-century words and ideas, the narrator will draw out their meaning and challenge the audience to consider their relevance and power for today.

"Declaring Independence" is part of a multi-year joint initiative of Freedom's Way National Heritage Area and the American Antiquarian Society to engage citizens in the ideas and transformative potential of the Declaration of Independence. This initiative includes researching the ways in which independence was conceived and debated within colonial communities in the years leading up to 1776; tracing how the Declaration's role evolved in American communities; and considering the challenges and potential of this living document for Americans today.

Charlottes Web
July 5-August 26

This summer, Old Sturbridge Village and Brian Clowdus Experiences bring the beloved story of Charlotte's Web to life at the Freeman Farm with a live musical production based on the classic and beloved tale by E.B. White. This production is a reinvented version of the story, set in a timeless New England era that honors the 1830s but with a modern license to breathe fresh air into the story!

In addition to the performance, tour the Village for a "Charlotte's Web Summer" where you can visit our adorable piglets, see costumed historians re-constructing the Allen Piggery, weaving and spinning yarn, blacksmithing, farming, making tin objects, and demonstrating other aspects of 19th-century life, and special exhibits.

An abundance of dining options will be available throughout the museum including our Tap Room Restaurant, Bullard Tavern Café, Ice Cream Shop, as well as a Charlotte's Web-themed eatery and concession adjacent to the performance area.

Written by Joseph Robinette, based on the book by E.B. White. Produced by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing, Woodstock, Illinois.

Show Dates & Times:
Shows will take place Wednesday - Sunday from July 5 thru August 26 (except no shows on August 4-5 due to Redcoats & Rebels).

Shows times are 11:00 am and 1:30 pm. Performances are just under an hour in length and take place on the Freeman Farm. Please plan to arrive at least 40 minutes prior to show time to allow sufficient time to check in and walk to the farm.
