A Florida City has had a recent bad run related to leaks
|
The Florida Rural Water Association has recently assisted a City in Florida who will remain nameless, upon request, with locating 3 leaks in the last week. We were taking pictures of the location and storm drain was allowing the largest leak to escape without surfacing when we were asked; "Wait what are you doing?" "We don't want to be on the cover of your next FRWA magazine!" So this City shall remain nameless and hope their bad run doesn't continue.
The story on bad run begins last week with City coming to the FRWA office to borrow a leak detector. We asked if they needed help along with the leak detector and they said only the equipment was needed as they has leak isolated but wanted to make sure they turned off the least amount of folks to fix the leak. In the end it was pinpointed to a galvanized line and only affected 3 customers so new service was run to those customers off a main line and the galvanized line was abandoned. This was a great decision as the line ran under a State Highway and it wasn't likely going to be the last time they had problems with this old line.

This Week in Water History

June 9, 2013:
Celebration of Centennial of Activated Sludge Process. "On June 9-11, the Water Environment Federation convened the forum, "Activated Sludge on its 100th Birthday: Challenges and Opportunities." The event was held at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the first patent of the activated sludge process near Boston. The Activated Sludge process is still the heart of modern wastewater treatment systems around the globe and was a sea-change in the burgeoning field of wastewater treatment, permitting wastewater treatment to occur in a much smaller footprint, saving space and treatment time while protecting public and environmental health. In the past 100 years, the process has been updated, modified, and augmented, to improve treatment, remove nutrients, and do so more efficiently. However, more stringent demands and resources challenges are necessitating another look at the process that has been the backbone of modern sanitation infrastructure."
