RECENT GREEN TEAM TRAININGS HIGHLIGHT COMMONALITIES BETWEEN TWO COMMUNITIES-BARNESVILLE & COLMAR MANOR
|
On paper, they are very different places, but in reality the have lots of commonalities. The Town of
Barnesville has a population of just 184 people (90% white), and is located in a rural setting with no commerical district, while the Town of
Colmar Manor has a population of 1,500 (majority African-American), in a dense urban environment with a busy commercial district.
However, as SM staff discovered at recent Green Team trainings, both communities:
- have very engaged and active Green Teams.
- have all-women town councils, and majority-women Green Teams.
- are looking to do regional planning and projects with neighbors (Barnesville with Poolesville, Colmar Manor with other Port Towns).
- recently installed new sidewalks made of permeable ashphalt.
- send their students to certified MD Green Schools.
We hope to bring together communities like these in the future, to learn from each other and inspire more sustainable planning and projects at the local level.

SOLAR UNITED NEIGHBORS LAUNCHES COMMUNITY SOLAR EDUCATIONAL SITE
|
Community solar is finally here in Maryland! The statewide program lets people who can't put solar on their property still go solar as part of a shared installation somewhere else. Solar United Neighbors of Maryland is a non-profit solar consumer advocate and they've recently launched a community solar educational site. The website
educates on community solar
and summarizes
offerings available to customers
by utility area, showing neutral, consumer-friendly information about each project.
