March 31, 2019: The Physicality of Grace

Grace is another of those "Wounded Words" that's been used to cause spiritual harm. It was the Calvinist understanding of Grace that inspired the theological stances of early Unitarians and Universalists. What might our physical experience of grace - as in "graceful" - have to say about the theological concept?

Together we are learning and loving the way being in community and celebrating some of the many traditions which are sources of our tradition. In the next month, we will be looking at both Passover and Ea ster from their Jewish and pagan roots to the Christian and Humanist overlay into Earth Day. These next lessons on Sundays are interconnected and yet each will be its own pearl of knowledge.

March 31  - All ages grades 2-12 will be getting the history of Passover through art, song, and reader's theatre style story play. Creative Compassionates class will also continue with its mirco-lending project via Kiva.org
April 7  - Age-grouped classes continue their curriculum of nature exploration, ethics plays, and spiritual practices exploration.
April 14 - Annual egg coloring EGGstravaganza  for grades K-7. Let me know if you can bring a dozen hard boiled eggs. YRUU will continue to learn worship planning skills.
April 21 - Easter/Earth Day:  Age-grouped classes continue their curriculum of nature exploration, ethics plays, and mindfulness. YRUU hide eggs and the younger ages get to have a hunt.
April 28 - Celebration of Passover  - All ages grades 2-12. A ritual meal with child-friendly haggadah, singing, and a hunt for the afikoman. Each family will be asked to bring an element. Please look for the sign-up.
May 5 - Retreat Sunday  - An All Ages art room will be available for families not attending the retreat.

May your days be blessed with joy and love,
Jeffrey

Last Chance to Sign up for the Retreat
You are needed at the Retreat!

You can still sign up for the Retreat!

We would like to have at least 25 more people to make the Retreat a rousing success. One evening, one day, or the whole weekend. All these options are available. Maybe the Friday night campfire with s'mores and singing is your interest. Maybe it's the Saturday night all-ages Barn dance? You can camp, you can have your own family room, you can stay in a motel "like" room. This is one of the best weekends of the year for building UUCM friendships between children, youth, parents, and the whole community. Scholarships are available to help defray the cost.
Dinners for Eight

Women's History in Music
Milton Wong played the works of Amy Beach (1867-1944) on Sunday March 3rd in honor of Women's History Month! Amy Beach was the best known woman composer of her time period and the first in the United States. A child prodigy, she began composing music at age four and performing publicly at age seven in a Unitarian church. At the age of thirteen, she wrote "The Rainy Day" following a visit with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow -- her first published song. In 1883, at age sixteen, she made her professional debut as a pianist. As a composer, Amy Beach created large orchestral works and other complex compositions. She was the first American woman to write a symphony. Amy used her position as one of the country's best known composers to encourage other women. We celebrate Amy Beach!
