Researchers receive $535K to manufacture metal parts for naval applications

Penn State researchers have received more than $535,000 to install a state-of-the-art "super-finishing lab" for 3D-printed metal parts. The new lab will complement the existing subtractive processing technology in the Factory for Advanced Manufacturing Education Lab within the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. >>

Researchers develop new method to identify patients at risk for readmission, emergency room visits, or death

Researchers from Penn State and Geisinger Health System developed a model to predict a patient's risk for needing further medical care three days after being discharged from the hospital. The model they developed is known as REDD, which stands for readmission, emergency department (ED), or death. >>

Penn State honored for excellence at IISE Annual Conference and Expo

Faculty, graduate students and alumni from the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering were recognized for their accomplishments at the 2018 Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers Annual Conference and Expo in Orlando, Florida. >>

The Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering had the honor of hosting Masahiko Mori, president of DMG MORI, on April 26 as he was recognized for his outstanding work in additive manufacturing. >>

Engineering service solutions

Penn State's Enterprise Networking and Communication Services turned to the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering to help improve the unit's service to the University community. That was the start of a fruitful relationship between the unit, the Marcus department, and the Learning Factory. >>

Making a musician

When Cassandra Sotos ('10 IE) left her job at Accenture and moved to Nashville to pursue music professionally, she didn't think she would find herself back at her alma mater in the very same engineering entrepreneurship class where she'd been a teaching assistant. During the 2017 fall semester, Sotos was selected as an entrepreneur for a project undertaken by the students of ENGR 310: Entrepreneurial Leadership. >>

Industrial engineers celebrate department successes at annual banquet

Alumni, faculty, staff, students and their families gathered in April to celebrate the achievements of the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial Engineering at its annual banquet. Held at the Atherton Hotel, a number of awards were presented at the event that was cohosted by the Penn State Chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers.

IE graduate student investigates smart maintenance in service sector

During his three years at Penn State, graduate student Kai-Wen Tien has accomplished many impressive research pursuits and is pushing the limits on what industrial engineering students can uncover, particularly in the service sector. >>

Quiz [re]design: Rethinking engineering design evaluation

Christopher McComb, assistant professor in engineering design and mechanical engineering, has created a unique design practicum that tests first-year engineering students' engineering design process comprehension and application capabilities. McComb holds a courtesy appointment in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. >>
