Love Like Jesus Header

Imagine a courtroom and picture the prosecutor attacking the defendant. The prosecutor says, "This man is a treasonous liar who is intent on destroying society as we know it. The defendant has no values and is stirring up trouble." His arguments are intense, spiteful, and hate filled and are intended to make the jury so angry that they will find the man guilty and call for his punishment. As I write I am imagining almost any courtroom drama on TV.

But the defendant doesn't respond the way we would expect. He says nothing. His defense team offers no rebuttal, nor do they try to justify his actions or proclaim his innocence. And when he is sentenced and the sentence is about to be carried out, instead of responding with hatred or seeking revenge, he merely says, 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." ( This illustration was inspired by Pat Damiani.)

Could I do that if I was in Jesus' place? My guess is that most of us would fall short of the love Jesus embodied in that moment.

Our journey from Lent through Easter this year has been all about how we can learn to Love Like Jesus. I hope you feel God working in our lives to help us Love Like Jesus in our worship. Join us on Sundays and for our special Maundy Thursday celebration during Holy Week as we explore the practical steps we all need to take so that we can love like that.

Our student minister, Frances Stanley will continue the series on March 31. I will return from vacation and see you all on April 7. If you have any pastoral needs remember to contact the Elder of the Month - Harold Manahan.

Michael

Outreach Opportunities

Week of Compassion
To date you have donated $1812.64 to the Week of Compassion offering. Not only do we help those around the world find ways to sustain life, but we also make a difference in our own country when natural disasters occur. You may not think that your one donation makes a difference - but believe me, God uses your gifts in ways - More Than We Can Imagine!  Week of Compassion serves around the world as well as around the year. It is not just a week - it continues to give all year long.

The Easter Offering will be received on April 14 & 21, 2019
"I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing." - John 15:5 NRSV

The 2019 Easter Offering will be received on April 14 and 21. Funds collected from this offering support General Ministries of the Church. General ministries serve across the United States and Canada, and around the world. These ministries address broad areas of work, central administrative functions and specialized study and services to meet responsibilities of the Church in its mission of witness and service to the world. General ministries strengthen congregational life for the church's mission. As we celebrate the life of Jesus Christ, we hope that you will give generously to this mission - thereby enabling the life of the congregation to grow and strengthen.

Habitat for Humanity Faith Build

A couple of years ago, Slash participated in a Faith Build Home through Habitat for Humanity. We have that opportunity to participate again this year. A new home will start construction in the April/May timeframe and Slash will once again offer the opportunity to be a part of that rewarding experience. More information will be coming in the next month or two; but in the meantime, I hope that you will think about participating in that build. No special skills are necessary - just a desire to help. We can participate by having a group from Slash sign up for a particular day to help build and/or by helping to furnish lunch on some work day to other workers. This is a time that we can fellowship while being a part of a great experience in helping to build a home for someone else. And at the same time, we get in a laugh or two as well! If you are interested, please let Cathy Tillman know so plans can be made. But stay tuned for more information - - -

Relay for Life Event in May

This year Slash has special plans to honor or remember our friends or family members touched by cancer. On Sunday, May 19th we will light candles for our loved ones and friends and we will have a special collection for the American Cancer Society as we light those candles.

Other special events will take place that Sunday with a luncheon after the ONE Worship service. Please plan to join us, make a special donation, light a candle and remember and honor those who have suffered whether as victims or as caregivers and friends. Let us HONOR and REMEMBER!

thank-you bubble

On behalf of ACES, please accept my deepest gratitude for the very generous donation of $800. ACES remains an all-volunteer organization and is supported solely by donations from our community - individuals, churches, businesses and civic clubs. Your generosity allows us to purchase needed food items for our pantry, assist with financial aid and/or sustain our senior rides program.
Sincerely,
Bonnie Hoskin

On behalf of the Virginia Council of Churches, please accept my gratitude for your continued support. It is the support of Covenant Churches like yours that makes it possible to make real the prayer of our Lord that we might all be one. Your gift of $120.00 is vital to the continuation and strengthening of the Council's ecumenical mission. Please continue to hold the VCC and our mission in Christ in your prayers.
Blessing,
Rev. Mary Anne Glover, Interim General Minister
