May 6, 2018: Class: An Underdiscussed -ism

Our society is perhaps the most socioeconomically stratified as it has been since the Gilded Age when there was a high concentration of wealth in the uppermost class. Class issues became apparent as a force in the presidential election, where Americans who had experienced downward social mobility (particularly less-than-college educated white males and females, the "deplorables") voted overwhelmingly for President Trump. Shouldn't we be willing to discuss class, and how it plays out in society as well as our denomination?
KC Greaney is a former member of UUCM and a founding member of the Unitarian Universalists of Petaluma, where she raised her children in our liberal faith tradition. She earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education and Organizational Change from UCLA and serves as the Director of Institutional Research at Santa Rosa Junior College.

We love introducing people to our faith and to this congregation, and we very much enjoy introducing new members to the rest of the congregation. New members bring us new ideas, talents and energy, and in turn we offer them a community in which they are supported in pursuing their spiritual journeys, unencumbered by creeds and dogma.
On Sunday, May 13th after the service, the Membership Committee and I will conduct a Path to Unitarian Universalism Class. This class is for newcomers and anyone who would like to learn a bit about Unitarian Universalist history and identity and about this congregation. A light lunch will be provided. Join us!
The following week, we will introduce new members to the congregation in our new member ceremony during the service. The Creative Compassionate class has done a survey of UUCM to see how it is doing regarding the Green Sanctuary process it started ten years ago. I think they will be presenting a report card of the congregation to the congregation. It is only via a multigenerational effort that we will be able to make lasting change in our communities and the world.

The ongoing Remarkable People series gives us time to learn about each other from the interesting stories of individual lives. Whether you already know them by name or not, you will learn what you don't know in the evening of sharing and community. Each person talks and there is time for questions and general sociability and usually some sustaining snacks.

Paul Dearborn are our May people of the month. (This is different from previously announced but unexpected schedule changes happen and these wonderful two have agreed to be Remarkable on short notice! More details next week.)

UUCM Readers' Theater invites members and friends to join our fun-loving group. We meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Monday of each month, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at UUCM. Most of the time, we read short plays aloud when we meet, but every 6-8 weeks we rehearse and then present short prose or poems during a service. No memorizing required, but you should be willing to ham it up and be silly. Information: Jan Seagrave (

UUCM Adult Ed discussion of the UUA 2017-2018 Common Read.
We will meet at the UUCM Retreat May 4-6, 1pm workshop about racism.
This anthology of vital voices from our own UUA ministry speaks to the challenges of being a minister of color in our denomination.
Adult Ed has purchased 10 copies from the UUA to circulate for reading
that can
be checked out from the Adult Ed Lending Library which is a well labeled box with a checkout form near the computer in the Community Room. If you have a copy you are willing to circulate please leave it in the Adult Ed Lending Library in the Community Room.

UUA General Assembly - June 20-24
|

General Assembly Kansas City, Missouri
General Assembly is the annual meeting of our Unitarian Universalist Association. Attendees worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through democratic process. Anyone may attend; congregations must certify annually to send voting delegates. The 2018 General Assembly will be June 20-24 in Kansas City, Missouri. Most General Assembly events will be held in the Kansas City Convention Center. GA will offer more than 175 programming selections over the course of five days. Major worships this year will be lead by UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray and Rev. Sofia Betancourt.
Be a delegate from UUCM or go on your own. GA is a fabulous experience.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH join adults during the first part of the service, and then attend Religious Exploration classes. Nursery and toddler care is provided during the 10:30 service. There is a speaker system to bring sound from Fellowship Hall to the nursing room and the pre-K area.
