Westland Kicks Off Construction Season with Two Infrastructure Improvement Projects
REVISED

Westland, MI (March 28, 2019) -   On Monday, March 18 2019 City Council approved two major projects to perform services to infrastructure in the city. These projects will replace defective water mains along with a comprehensive preventative maintenance program to lengthen the life of our roads.

Water main replacement will be performed by Bridigare Contractors with the cost to the city not exceeding $883,847. This project aims to replace 4,000 feet of defective pipe dated at 70 years old. Water mains to be replaced are along Cardwell, Floral, and Deering streets north of Warren road until they dead-end. Work performed will be the minimally invasive pipe bursting method, where the new pipe is inserted through the existing pipe. This eliminates the need to remove the old pipe by excavation. Residents will be notified when their water will be shut off to accommodate work being performed. Residents should expect their water to be shut off for no more than 8-10 hours, normally any time between 8 am and 5 pm. Work is slated to begin late April 2019 and is expected to reach completion by the end of July 2019, weather permitting.

Following the restoration of water service to a house, residents should let their water run until it is no longer cloudy and trapped air is removed. Residents should also be aware that after water service is restored, a precautionary boil water advisory is in effect in accordance with the Department of Environmental Quality for a 24 hour period. Please bring water used for drinking or cooking to a full boil for a minimum of one minute.

As part of the City of Westland's five year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), City Council has authorized maintenance on roadways under its jurisdiction. Work will be performed by MI Joint & Sealing Inc. and cost to the city shall not exceed $337,100. Location will be determined at a later date. The scope of work to be performed includes cleaning and sealing cracks and joints in pavement with hot rubber asphalt. The intent of this project is preventative maintenance that will prevent water damage to roadways and has proven to be cost effective. Work will be performed on an as needed basis. Residents should expect work to be performed between the months of May 2019 and November 2019, weather permitting.

Repair work will be performed during normal work hours and traffic will have access to streets at all times. Mail delivery and garbage pick-up services will not be affected during this project. Please keep all parked vehicles off the street and sprinklers turned off between 7 am and 7 pm. Once cracks are sealed and traffic cones are removed, residents may begin parking on the streets again.
