- Mixed messages about the best use of their time on campus
The Solo Success Workshop is specifically designed to address the unique concerns of under-represented faculty members. Specifically, participants learn to:
- Identify the common challenges under-represented faculty face on the tenure-track
- Identify the three biggest mistakes under-represented faculty make
- Specific strategies for increasing productivity, serving strategically, teaching efficiently, and building strong and healthy professional relationships
- Identify why and how to connect with communities of support and accountability

Inclusive Classroom Communication Faculty Learning Community
The Inclusive Classroom Communication Faculty Learning Community is an informal bi-monthly gathering of DU tenure-track and teaching-track faculty who come together to engage in meaningful dialogue and hands-on application of best practices in inclusive pedagogy. We seek to build community, participate in a genuine discussion of our teaching, and exercise best practices for immediate implementation in our classrooms.
This community is facilitated by Dr. Christina Foust and Dr. Valentina Iturbe-LaGrave and will meet on the following Tuesdays from 10:00-11:50 am: April 2, April 16, April 30, May 14, and May 28.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Lunch and Learn
Join us to learn from DU faculty and staff about the ways we can work together to create courses that integrate UDL principles, guidelines, and checkpoints. Presenters will share examples of what it looks like to provide multiple means of engagement, representation, action, and expression in their courses; and we will cover the range of UDL support available to faculty who are eager to implement this framework in their teaching practice!

Faculty Showcase: How Does a Country Recover from Genocide? Lessons in Experiential Learning in Rwanda with Professor Nancy Wadsworth
This faculty showcase is based on Prof. Nancy Wadsworth’s 2018 Winter Interterm Advanced Seminar in Rwanda, “Rwanda in the Wake of Genocide: Stretching to Understand the Unfathomable.” We will explore some of the opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned from immersing ourselves in Rwanda’s history, visiting many of the nation’s memorials to the genocide, meeting with organizations working toward reconciliation and healing, spending more time together than we do in a standard classroom, and hearing from Rwandans at this optimistic moment in the country’s life.

Events with the OTL 2018-2019 Faculty Fellow, Paul Michalec
Dr. Paul Michalec, Clinical Professor in the Morgridge College of Education, is the 2018-2019 OTL Faculty Fellow. Paul will spearhead initiatives intended to foster a culture of community-building and greater collegial engagement on our campus.
He hosts monthly Heart of Higher Education Conversations that are an opportunity to gather as a DU community to share the challenges and opportunities of transcending the institutional, professional, and personal choices that tend to separate core identity/integrity from day to day actions. The Heart of Higher Education Conversations create a space where staff and faculty can explore ways of re-connecting calling with professional responsibilities. Our time together is bounded by norms designed to create an open invitation to share while respecting individual choices to not share at a particular time.

Furthermore, you are invited to join Paul Michalec and Paula Adamo (Languages and Literature) for a conversation and exploration of Laura Rendon's book Sentipensante. Professor Rendon will offer us a rich description of a teaching philosophy and engaged pedagogy that favors holism, integration, and community while also attending to critical thinking and rigor. Core to her reconceptualization of teaching and learning in higher education is the Aztec understanding of "difrasismo," where two independent concepts are brought together in order to create a third distinct notion that is greater than the sum of its two parts. As the subtitle of the book suggests (educating for wholeness, social justice, and liberation), Rendon's goal is to free the hearts and minds of professors and students in service of learning. Paul and Paula will host through the Office of Teaching and Learning a three week discussion of the book (themes and practical ideas). You are welcome to attend all of the sessions or just the dates that fit your schedule.
