Spring is Here!
We're back from Tucson and Oh, what a trip! We continue to bring   back more inventory each year (2 semi's this year) and can't wait for you to see it all at our 13th Annual Tucson Trunk Sale starting March 9th. During this trip I was able to negotiate a spectacular buy for a special lot of decorator pieces of Amethyst, plus some Agate, Citrine and Kyanite home and office nature accents.  We will be showcasing this special buy in our studio and will have all pieces specially priced at 50% off marked price. Several pieces are large dark colored cathedrals plus many sizes of amethyst geode wing pairs displayed on black metal stands. This half-off opportunity will be limited to the trunk sale only. If you've always wanted that heart stopping piece of amethyst but never could afford it, this very well could be your chance to take one home.

There seems to be one or two minerals that seem prevalent at each show and dominates our buying selections. This year it seemed to be Chrysocolla and Labradorite. However, my favorite pick for the trip were the small but spectacularly radiant iridescent Rainbow Garnets we brought back.  Be sure to watch for our e-mail next week detailing all the various minerals, fossils, jewelry and more we brought back for our Tucson Trunk Sale.

Even though we're crazy busy trying to get everything processed from Tucson for the trunk sale, we will also be traveling to Corpus Christi for the 56th annual Gulf Coast Gem & Mineral Show on March 3rd & 4th. and on Sunday, March 3rd, we'll be at the Healing Arts Festival and Market in San Antonio.  If you're in the neighborhood be sure to stop by our booths and say "Hi!".

This month brings the Vernal or Spring Equinox also known as the first day of Spring.  On the Equinox we find our days split evenly between the light of day and cover of night. This means that the northern and southern hemispheres are equally illuminated or as close as it can get anyway. This is the time when the sun rises every where on earth at about 6:00am and sets at about 6:00pm.

In my travels I have come to realize that our created environments  are truly changing to bring nature back into our living spaces. Whether it's a consciousnesses or not, the end result of  bringing the joyous energies of Mother Nature into our lives is the same. Check out these natural quartz crystal point chandeliers illuminating their main lobby at The Ritz Carlton at Half Moon Bay, CA, where I was able to recharge from our big buying trip before heading back to Austin!

Remember your green on St Patrick's Day, we may have a flash sale happening around that time. Happy March everyone!

Blessings

Treasure Tome: A Trove of Knowledge

Amethyst: An Etiology

By Michael J. Kallstrom, MS Geosciences

In modern times most people know amethyst as the February birthstone. However, Amethyst has a rich history in mythology and lore spanning time and the globe. The name is derived from the Greek word amethustos meaning 'not drunken,' although the etiological (origin) story for amethyst was not relayed until 1576 by a French poet named Remy Belleau (Knuth, Gems in Myth, Legend, and Lore, Revised Edition, 2007).

Several variations of this story exist, but since I am a romantic, I have chosen to tell the following version...Once upon a time, the Greek god of wine, Dionysus, fell madly in love with a fair maiden name Amethyste who he pursued relentlessly, drunk with love. However, Amethyste refused his advances and wished to remain chaste. She beseeched the virgin goddess, Artemis, to protect her virtue. The goddess, therefore, turned Amethyste into a pillar of white crystal. Dionysus, being humbled by Amethyste's desire to remain chaste, poured wine on the crystals as an offering that turned them forever the color of grapes.

In actuality amethyst belongs to the quartz family with the purple color resulting from trace amounts of iron that substitute for silica in the crystalline structure. The iron absorbs certain wavelengths of light, such as yellows and oranges, which causes us to see a purple hue. The iron generally comes from basaltic, iron-rich rocks through which groundwater flows and leaches out the iron and silica necessary to form this purple variety of quartz.

However, this knowledge only makes the amethyst origin story more astounding. Quartz is typically colorless or white like the original crystal pillar, and due to its allochromatic ("other colored") nature, it can turn purple through the aforementioned process. The storytellers must have noticed the similar crystal habits and physical properties shared between quartz and amethyst, so they naturally correlated the two in this origin story.

Regardless, ancient Greeks and Romans often attributed amethyst the power of sobriety, believing that wearing an amulet of amethyst prevented inebriation. Some anthropologists believe this can be attributed to ancient Romans drinking water from amethyst goblets. The water appeared the color of wine, but one could not get drunk from it. In modern times this belief in amethyst's sobering powers has led to its use in the new age community for alleviating addictions of any kind. Amethyst's association with the crown chakra in vedic tradition results in its use for intuition, dreaming, spiritual connectedness and general well-being.

Notes on Agates:
Silica is the key component to agate formation since it belongs to the quartz family made up of SiO2.  Because of their beauty and durability, agates have been used since the Neolithic as tools, jewelry, tableware and decor for thousands of years. Although agate has been used for ages, new world agates have only been mined recently and many varieties are mined out.

March's
Birthstones

Aquamarine & Bloodstone

The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea. Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color usually is more intense in larger stones, and darker blue stones are very valuable. This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.

Like emeralds, this gemstone is actually a variety of a mineral called beryl. It's also used to celebrate 19th wedding anniversaries.

The second birthstone for March is bloodstone, a dark-green stone flecked with vivid red spots of iron oxide. Generally found embedded in rocks or in riverbeds as pebbles, primary sources for this stone are India, Brazil, and Australia.

Bloodstone is also called heliotrope, a word from the ancient Greek that means "to turn the sun." Many believe it was probably named such because of ancient ideas about how minerals reflect light. In fact, some believed that the sun itself would turn red if this stone was put into water.
