Course Updates & Golf Etiquette Tips
The end of an era...We took down the Black Willow tree that stood at the entrance to the big bridge on Wednesday April 25, 2018. It was a sad day for all who have enjoyed the shade it provided for over 70+ years. Many of you might remember the 9ft tall "Reel Man" that stood under its arching limbs from the late 1980's-2002 created by former superintendent John Stevenson. If anyone would happen to have a photo of it, I would sure love to have a copy. The plan is to replace the willow with a Swamp White Oak.
Golf is a game that has tremendously evolved over the last century. It now embraces more diversity in its players, availability of affordable golf courses and technical advancements in equipment, all while maintaining its foundation of rules and etiquette. Without the rules and etiquette of the past, golf today would look like something between a bad baseball game and a good lacrosse game. I think the 3 most important forms of etiquette that are every bit as relevant today as they were 100 years ago are replacing your divots, fixing your ball marks on the green and keeping your cart 30 feet from greens and tees. Okay, maybe they didn't have the cart rule 100 years ago, but it still makes my top 3. Applying proper etiquette to your round will ensure an enjoyable round for the players behind you. Thanks for being an important part of the daily course maintenance. We couldn't do it without you!
Finally, thanks to Erica Young and Jacqueline Mulligan for creating the new Audubon area in the Pro Shop. It really looks great! They put together two new binders: Wildlife Inventory and Count Your Steps, for your use. We encourage you to continue recording any wildlife you see during your round. We submit your recordings as part of our Audubon recertification. A new program we are starting this year is recording your steps while playing golf. So get you fit bits on and jot down your name, date and steps in the binder. There will be prizes at the end of the season!
FYI-Greens aerification will take place on May 7, 2018.
