The Aging Report
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) which is a day that focuses global attention on the problem of physical, financial and emotional abuse of elderly people. WEAAD aims to provide an opportunity for communities to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect and raise awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. This observance serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations and communities to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Advocacy Acton Alert
Contact Your Senator Today!
Many contracts between health insurers or pharmacy benefit managers and retail pharmacies have a gag rule that prohibits the pharmacy from telling customers when a prescription drug would be less expensive if bought directly, without using insurance, than if purchased through insurance. Congress is considering a ban on this provision.
Senate Bill S 2553, the Know the Lowest Price Act, applies to Medicare Part D plans and Medicare Advantage plans, and Senate Bill S 2554, the Patient Right to Know Act, applies to insurance purchased through the Affordable Care Act or offered by a private employer; otherwise they are identical.

We urge you to email your U.S. Senators, Richard Durbin , and Tammy Duckworth , and tell them to support these bills. Please tell your U.S. Representative that the House should pass similar legislation.

Medicare Part B offers programs to help diabetics manage the disease better through appropriate diet, exercise, medications, and other medical and lifestyle measures. A recently introduced bill in the U.S. House, HR 5768, would increase the amount of training provided, both in the first year after diagnosis and thereafter. The program is now subject to Medicare co payments and deductibles, but under this bill it would be free to recipients.

Tell your U.S. Representative that you support HR 5768 to keep Medicare beneficiaries healthier and to reduce health care costs associated with diabetes, and ask your U.S. Senators to support it, too.
