Greetings!

If you will be starting your MS or MBA degree at the University of Maryland this August 2018, you will receive instruction on your immigration requirements during your Smith School's orientation program. Please don't miss this important session! Here is a preview of what to expect...
Today's Tip: Immigration Requirements after Arriving in the US

All F-1 students have two immigration requirements to complete after they arrive to campus. These are:

1. ) ATTEND THE IMMIGRATION SESSION INCLUDED DURING YOUR SMITH SCHOOL ORIENTATION
T he Smith School will organize a comprehensive orientation program for you which covers many topics including immigration. The immigration session, led by our office,  will review how to maintain legal status in the US and also steps you must take so your F-1 record is "activated," meaning your arrival is reported in the government's SEVIS system. Be sure you do not miss this important event! Attendance is recorded since this is required.   Be  on the lookout with information from the Smith School!

2. ) COMPLETE A DOCUMENTS CHECK IN iTERP (ONLINE) AFTER YOU ARRIVE IN THE UNITED STATES
The Documents Check is a quick but important online process in iTerp (https://iterp.umd.edu).

When to complete Documents Check-In at iTerp:
DO NOT try to do the check-in until AFTER you arrive in the US because you will need to upload a copy of your Admissions record, available only after being processed by Customs at the airport (More detail about this is coming soon in a future Tip).

At the latest, you must complete your iTerp Document Check within 30 days of your orientation.

How to do Documents Check-In:
  1. Once logged in to your iTerp portal, you will select "New Student Check-In" from the side menu, and then select "Documents Check."
  2. Upload the requested documents and your US contact information.
  3. Click "submit."
  4. ISSS will use this information to ensure your immigration status is correct and then "activate" your F-1 immigration status in the government database, SEVIS, thus reporting your arrival to campus.

Failure to complete Documents Check within 30 days of orientation may result in your F-1 status being canceled.

We hope that you find these emails informative and helpful.   If you do not intend to enroll at UMD and would like to stop receiving these emails, please inform the admissions office.
Sincerely,
