CENTER HIGHLIGHTS
Co-Sponsored Events
The Bunche Center was pleased to co-sponsor several events this month in partnership with several Howard University schools and departments.

On March 4th, the Department of History hosted a lecture on the rise of Brazil's hyper-nationalist president, Jair Bolsonaro, who many have called the Trump of the Tropics. The lecture was presented by Brazilian professor, Dr. Rosana Pinheiro-Machado of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.

Another important discussion took place at the Howard University School of Law during the launch of the recently released report on police violence against Black people in the US. Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Commissioner, Margarette May Macaulay, offered opening remarks before a robust panel discussion with individuals affected by police violence and those fighting against it.

Finally, the film "I, Black Woman, Resists" which documents the assassination of Brazilian Activist and politician, Marielle Franco, was screened at the School of Communications. The film, which has been on tour for the past year, aims to spread awareness of about the #MarielleResists movement.

NAFSA Annual Conference
The largest conference for international educators in the world is coming to Washington, DC in May and the Bunche Center team wants YOU to get involved. Center Director, Tonija Hope Navas is one of the co-chairs for the Annual Conference Local Arrangements Team (LAT) with Jason Terry of Global Ties. Bunche Center team members, MaRaina Montgomery, Michelle Morris and Laurel Brooks are also serving on the LAT this year.

School of Education in Colombia
Over spring break, RBC Director, Tonija Navas accompanied students and faculty from the HU School of Education to Cali, Colombia as part of their International Internship course. The group had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Office of the Mayor who were responsible for education and visit schools and community organizations. At a visit to Carlos Holguin Mallarino School in Aguablanca, teachers and administrators were impressed that our students were so committed to teaching in urban public schools in the US. The students will be presenting their reflections on the trip in the next couple of weeks. Thank you to the School of Education for inviting the RBC to be a part of this experience.
Getting to Know Australia and New Zealand
Study Abroad Manager, MaRaina Montgomery, participated on two site visits with program partner AIFS and IES. Site visits are bite sized study abroad experiences offered by program providers and serve to help study abroad professionals better advise their students as they consider going abroad. MaRaina joined several other study abroad professionals in Australia and New Zealand for a two week tour of the schools and cities each provider offers programs. Several highlights of the trip include:
  • Catching up with Tricia-Marie who is currently studying in New Zealand with AIFS,
  • Touring the University of Auckland which offers AASB accredited courses that our business students can take, and
  • of course, the nature and beauty of each country!
For more information on these two destinations, visit Ms. Montgomery during advising hours Tuesday-Friday from 1-5PM.
