ARS Erebouni Chapter of New York Fundraiser
Reported by Miss Nevair Oranjian

On Sunday, March 17, 2019 over 190 people attended the Armenian Relief Society Erebouni Chapter of New York ARS Vision 2020 fundraiser at Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington.

Ungerouhi Nevair Oranjian thanked everyone for attending the cultural afternoon of Armenian singing and dancing, provided some background of the Armenian Relief Society, and introduced the performers: The Datevig Children's Choir of St. Sarkis Church and the Hamazkayin Nayiri Dance Ensemble of New Jersey.

Datevig Children's Choir started the afternoon with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and Mer Hayrenik before starting their program. The talented choir, including the soloists, amazed the crowd with their performance.

We can't wait to see what their future holds! During the second part of the program the Nayiri Dance Ensemble danced to their hearts content and showed the audience the true beauty of traditional Armenian dancing. Musical selections included Kele Kele by Arapo, and Kini Lits/Zartonk and Kele Kele by Sirusho.

In between dances, Ungerouhi Nevair Oranjian spoke about the history and goals of the ARS, informing the audience about the ARS's true mission and purpose in all that they do.

Der Nareg Terterian ended the program with his heartfelt closing remarks about the performances and the role of the ARS in the Armenian community. Thank you, Datevig Children's Choir and Nayiri Dance Ensemble, for a wonderful afternoon!

Salt & Light Youth Group Session
Reported by Mrs. Liza Kabarajian
On Saturday, March 16 th the Salt and Light Session that was held was on the BADARAK. We were very happy and proud to see over 40 kids in this meeting and for that we would like to thank them and their parents who encouraged them to be a part of it.
Der Nareg addressed the youth about the meaning and the importance of Badarak in the Armenian Church, thus in our Armenian Christian faith.
Soorp Badarak (Divine Liturgy) means Holy Sacrifice. Derhayr started by introducing the origin of Badarak which was the Last Supper Jesus had during Passover with his disciples in the Upper Room and it started to be practiced before the New Testament scriptures were written. Then he talked about the Saints who wrote and composed the music of the Badarak.
Later on Der Nareg explained the two main parts of Badarak which are Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Faithful (the Eucharist). The first part involves the different Scripture readings one from the Old Testament, one from the New Testament and a Gospel message. The Eucharist part is when the wine and the bread are put in the Chalice, which represents the blood and the body of our Lord Jesus Christ. Then Derhayr talked about the conditions for participation and the importance of receiving Soorp Haghortootioon (Holy Communion).
In conclusion, Der Nareg emphasized how important it is to be attending Soorp Badarak in our Armenian Christian faith because we are not only taking part in a collective worship but also we are confessing and asking for forgiveness of our sins and receiving the Holy Communion remembering the sacrifice Jesus Christ made once and for all for our salvation.

St. Sarkis Church Salt & Light Youth Group & Homenetmen of New York Ice Skating Event
Reported by Mr. Karekin Shamlian
On Saturday evening March 16 th , St. Sarkis Church Salt & Light Youth Group along with Homenetmen of New York hosted an Ice Skating Event at the Port Washington Skating Center.
75 youngsters, along with their parents, came out to enjoy a fun filled evening skating away on the ice. Everyone had big bright smiles while they were going around and around on the ice.
Parents on the sidelines were enjoying conversations with each other, and also watching while their children were laughing and joking around having a great time on the ice. At the end of the session, everyone got together and took a group picture to wrap up a beautiful, fun filled evening.
"What a great way to bring kids together so they can enjoy themselves" was a comment from one of the parents. All people can talk about at the end of the session was how much fun they had spending time with friends.
SAINT SARKIS BASKETBALL NEWS PERFECT SEASON FOR A "PERFECT TEAM"
Reported by Mr. Edward Barsamian
Saint Sarkis Girls Basketball team is the Armenian Churches Sports Association Champion. AGAIN.
FINISHING with a "perfect" 10-0 record in regular season play and 1st place, the Girls extended their undefeated streak to 12 games with a playoff victory against St. Thomas and the Championship victory against St. Leon 1 team.
Including the last 4 games in the previous season, our girls are sporting a 16 game victory streak.

In the Championship game, St. Leon started strong and took a quick 4-0 lead, which extended to an 11-6 1st quarter lead. In the 2nd quarter, the Saint Sarkis defense tightened with Alicia Mordjikian, Maria Kaliagas and Olivia Nercessian playing strong down low and Breanna and Stephanie Shulman tightly guarding the most potent St. Leon threat, Adrine Najarian, and holding St. Leon to just 1 point. Stephanie, Tonya Orangian and Margaret Sakar were the Saint Sarkis sharpshooters, outscoring St. Leon  10-1 in the 2nd quarter. Score at halftime 16-12 Saint Sarkis.

The 3rd quarter was a fast and physical game with Saint Sarkis extending their lead to 11 points before St. Leon scored the last 6 points, making it a close game again. 25-20 Saint Sarkis.
Strong defense was the theme in the 4th quarter with each team scoring only 4 points each.

With 1 minute left in the game, our terrific ball handlers Stephanie and Breanna kept the ball away from St. Leon with an awesome display of ball control as the crowd started chanting the final countdown: 5-4-3-2-1 . An explosion of joy from our players, coaches and fans put the fitting finishing touch to a "perfect season"

The following award ceremony provided individual championship trophies for our girls. 2 large team trophies, one for 1st place finish during the regular season and a larger one for the Championship will add to a growing number of trophies from previous years.

The whole joyful event would not be complete without a team picture by Levon Sakar, who in a few hours' time enlarged, printed and framed a large team picture for each of the team members and coaches. We cannot give enough thanks to Mr. Sakar for providing a pictorial chronicle of the Girls' season.

The Girls All-Tournament team consisted of our Tonya Orangian and Breanna Shulman, St Leon's Adrine Najarian and Sosie Akian, and our Stephanie Shulman was the All-Tournament MVP.
All in all a perfect season for a wonderful group of young ladies.
Looking to the future...FOR THE BOYS AND GIRLS

We will start evening outdoor practices for girls ages 8 and older who will learn the game of basketball in a friendly, competitive, fun play in preparation of joining the team when they reach the age of 10. As the daylight hours grow longer, we will announce practice days and times.

PS. Young boys may join the practices as well.

Saint Sarkis Basketball - Junior Boys - THE MIRACLE ON 234 STREET ( Saint Sarkis )
FOR OUR Junior Boys basketball team in its second year it was truly a miraculous turnaround from an 0-10 record to an amazing 8-2 regular season record in its 2nd year. Counting the Playoff win against Sts Vartanantz, that would make 9 wins in an inspiring season, the only loses coming against this year's champions, HM 1.

With the addition of several new players, the team greatly improved their basketball skill under the caring guidance of Coaches Arry Nalbandian and Jeff Varadi.

Mixing basketball with much fun and life advice, the coaches developed a team that has made deep friendships and enjoy playing together.

After an exciting victory in the play-offs against Sts. Vartanantz, the team came to the Championship in high spirits. Regretfully, it was short lived as the team had to play without 3 of its starters due to injury and other reasons.
After a slow start, the team played well with points scored by Alex Kouyoudjian, James Kasparian, Noah Cubi, Edward Hazarian and Vahan Gostanian.

During the post game award ceremonies, each team member received a Championship runner-up trophy
And Alex Kouyoudjian was chosen to the All Tournament team.

Once again, a miraculous season for our team comes to an end with wonderful memories and high hopes for the future.

A REVISED ARTICLE
There was an oversight in the acknowledgments of a few participates. The pastor and the Board of Trustees are grateful for all who participated in St. Sarkis Church Name Day celebration. We are very fortunate to have such talented students in our Saturday School.

On Sunday, February 17, St. Sarkis marked another memorable celebration of its name day.  This year's Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Hagop Gorgissian, did a masterful job in organizing a program that was inspirational, educational and showcased the diverse talent of our youth.  Dr. Gorgissian started the program by presenting short stories which taught valuable life lessons -- the importance of kindness, forgiveness and faith.  He then gave presentations on two of our greatest literary figures -- Hovhannes Toumanyan and Silva Gaboudikian.  2019 marks the 150th anniversary of Toumanyan's birth and the 100th anniversary of Gaboudikian's birth.  Hearing excerpts of their works revived beautiful memories for our parishioners while also inspiring those hearing them for the first time to learn more.

After a brief interlude, students from the Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School (Aris Givelekian, Alex Demirdjan, Hovsep & Laurie Terterian, AnnaMarie Megerian, Angelika Indzhigulyan, Rita Wanesian,  Ani Boudakian and  accompanied by her father Narek Boudakian  and AnnMarie Hazarian)  showcased their talent under the direction of Haigouhi Megerian and Zepiur Ardzivian. It was a delight to see and hear such a dedicated and talented group of children ranging from toddler to teenagers.

Following the musical program and conclusion of the lunch, Srpazan Anoushavan and Der Nareg presented the Eastern Prelacy's Certificate of Merit to the following recipients for their ongoing service and dedication to St. Sarkis Church: Raffi Nenejian and Nyrie Bedrossian (co-chairs of the Salt & Light Youth Group -- accepting on Nyrie Bedrossian's behalf was her mother, Elsie Halajian), Makrouhi Kalayjian (for her service to the choir and support of the St. Sarkis summer camp and prior service to St. Illuminator's Armenian Cathedral), and Annette Givelekian (for her service to the Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School).  Srpazan Anoushavan thanked them for their service and encouraged those in attendance -- especially the youth -- to redouble their efforts to ensure that St. Sarkis continues to thrive for generations to come.

Many thanks to the organizers of the luncheon -- Alina Kochoumian, Nayda Voskerijian, Haigouhi Megerian, Zepiur Ardzivian and Yn. Annie Terterian -- for a superb job, as well as Dr. Hagop Gorgissian, Haigouhi Megerian, Aris Givelekian, Alex Demirdjan, Hovsep & Laurie Terterian, AnnaMarie Megerian,
Angelika Indzhigulyan, Rita WanesianAni Boudakian & Nareg Boudakian and AnnMarie Hazarian)
But most of all, thanks to Srpazan Anoushavan, who celebrated his first St. Sarkis celebration at the church he led for so many years and under whose leadership all Prelacy churches will surely thrive, and to Der Nareg who whose leadership has and will ensure the growth and prosperity of St. Sarkis Church.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS (4:17-5:14)
So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person-such a person is an idolater-has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible-and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said:
   "Wake up, sleeper,
   rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you."

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (16.1-31)
Jesus told his disciples: "There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. So he called him in and asked him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.'
"The manager said to himself, 'What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm ashamed to beg- I know what I'll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.'
"So he called in each one of his master's debtors. He asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?'
" 'Eight hundred gallons of olive oil,' he replied.
"The manager told him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred.'
"Then he asked the second, 'And how much do you owe?'
" 'A thousand bushels of wheat,' he replied.
"He told him, 'Take your bill and make it eight hundred.'
"The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own?
"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight.
"The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
SUNDAY OF THE STEWARD
This Sunday, March 24, the fourth Sunday of Lent, is the Sunday of the Steward (Dntesi Giragi). The parable of the Unrighteous Steward is in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 16 (see reading above). This parable is about a rich man and his steward. The steward was one who looked out for his own personal benefit and through his cunning arrangements he made deals with those who were in debt to his master. Jesus used this parable not to condone the behavior of the steward but rather as an illustration of qualities that have a necessary place in the life of true disciples. Since we are stewards of the world, we are accountable to our Lord for the talents we have and the things that have been entrusted to our care.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus used parables as a teaching tool. His parables were common stories, usually short and always interesting. Generally, the stories were used to convey important moral and ethical lessons. Some of the parables are simple and easy to comprehend. Others are more complex and challenging.
SAINTS HONORED THIS SATURDAY

This Saturday, March 23, the Armenian Church commemorates the following four saints:
St. John
Patriarch of Jerusalem, succeeded St. Cyril as Patriarch of Jerusalem (386-417). He grew up with the monks at the monastery of Nitria (Egypt) where he learned about Christianity and the teachings of Origen. He was noted for his keen intellect and is said to have delivered inspiring and eloquent sermons.

Hovhan Odznetsi
(St. John of Otzoon) was catholicos from 717 to 728, which was a period when Armenia was under Arab rule. He defended Armenians from forced conversion and was successful in securing the right of worship for Armenian Christians. He was also successful in securing tax-exempt status for the church. He was highly admired and respected.

Hovhan Vorodnetsi
(St. John of Orotni) was born in 1317. Following his ordination he served at the monasteries of Klatzor and Datev. He dedicated most of his efforts toward the preservation of the orthodox faith, and against the attempt to merge the Armenian Church with the Latin Church. He wrote commentaries on the Gospel of John and the epistles of St. Paul.

Krikor Datevatzi
(St. Gregory of Datev), born in 1346 in the province of Vayotz Tzor, is perhaps the best known of the four. He was a student of John of Orotni and a great defender of the character of the Armenian Church. He was a brilliant scholar; he knew Latin fluently and had studied the Greek philosophers extensively. He is regarded to be the greatest teacher of the Armenian Church. His most famous work is the Book of Questions (Kirk Hartsmants), which examines questions of faith. He is also credited with setting a high standard for preaching. He is often referred to as "the second Gregory the Illuminator." Datevatzi, who died in 1409, had the distinction of being the last person to be canonized in the Armenian Church until four years ago when the Martyrs of April were sanctified on the 100 th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
