MAY 2018 * Flowers * SPRING * Memorial Day
|
|
With warmer weather on the way this month, it’s time to start planning now for outdoor activities. The Town will be hosting several programs this month to get everyone outside to enjoy the sunshine, trails, parks and open spaces in our community. Members of the Superior Historical Commission will kick off the season with their annual
Walk Through Original Superior on
May 5th. The free walk will begin at the Superior Historical Museum in Asti Park and make stops at Grasso Park, the site of Superior Train Depot and the Industrial Mine Camp. Then on
May 19, the Town's Wildlife Ecologist
Ashley DeLaup will teach the basics of bird identification, talk about bird behavior and look for nests in
All About Birds in Autrey Park. May also means it's time for the
Community Garage Sale and the
opening of the North and South Swimming Pools. There are plenty of activities taking place this month to welcome in the warm weather.

New Smoking Ordinance for Town Playgrounds, Pavilions, Sports Fields and Sports Courts
|
Smokers are no longer permitted to light-up at playgrounds, pavilions, sports fields and sports courts, in the Town of Superior. Trustees recently voted to adopt the addition to the communities already limiting ordinance that prohibits smoking in public buildings, consumer stores, and restaurants. Across Colorado, 20 municipalities have a similar ban on outdoor smoking, including neighboring Arvada and Boulder. Nationwide more than 1500 communities don’t allow smoking outdoors in public spaces.
A team from Stanford has cleared up the popular misconception that fumes from a cigarette smoldering outside dissipate before causing harm. University researchers conducted the first-of-its-kind look at the effects of second-hand smoke outdoors and discovered a non-smoker sitting a few feet downwind from a burning cigarette is likely to be exposed to substantial levels of contaminated air, many times more concentrated than typical background air pollution levels. Superior Mayor Clint Folsom says, “We’ve been receiving complaints in increasing numbers - this addition to our ordinance will ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for all of our residents.”
The addition to the Towns already adopted no-smoking ordinance went into effect last month. The Sheriff’s Office will enforce the new regulations through routine patrols and responses to complaints.

How to Choose and Dispose of Light Bulbs for Your Home
|
LED bulbs last significantly longer and don't contain toxic mercury.
LEDs (as well as traditional incandescent bulbs) do not contain hazardous chemicals, and may be placed in trash.
CFLs and
traditional fluorescent bulbs contain mercury and must be disposed of as hazardous waste and not be placed in trash. Many local stores accept CFLs for recycling or you can take them to
Boulder County’s Hazardous Materials Management Facility (HMMF) for disposal.

Historical Commission Corner
|
|
The second Saturday of the month always means the
Superior Historical Museum is
open to visitors. Plan on dropping by the Museum during the hours of
10 am to 2 pm on
Saturday, May 5th. We invite you to view exhibits such as Josephine Roche, the progressive female owner of the Industrial Mine, Miss Oerman, beloved teacher at the Superior School, the Dust Bowl in Superior and Colorado and more! The Museum is located at
2nd and Maple in Original Superior.
In addition, the Commission will host the annual and very popular
“Historic Walk Through Old Superior” which will be held after the Museum closes on
May 5th. This walk takes us to the homestead and farm buildings in
Grasso Park, then on south to the site of the
Industrial Mine and Mine Camp. Commission volunteers will lead the walk telling history stories along the way. At the mine site, many foundations are still visible and volunteers will explain what buildings they were associated with and point out the actual spot where the coal mine shaft is located. The walk begins shortly after closing at
2 pm on May 5th. Come early and visit the museum before the walk. Participants should plan on walking 2-3 miles over uneven terrain containing cacti and yucca plants along with old scrap metal. In other words, please wear strong shoes or hiking apparel.
Please RSVP for this FREE event by emailing Bryan Meyers at
bryanm@superiorcolorado.gov with the total number of attendees.
For more information, call
Bryan Meyer, Town staff, at
303-499-3675 or

Spring has arrived, and the community is out enjoying the sunshine. You can reduce your risk of injury while enjoying the weather with a few simple steps. If you are biking, skating or riding a scooter remember to wear a
properly fitted helmet. If you are out at dusk or dawn wear light colored clothing and reflective gear if possible.
When you are crossing roads in the crosswalk, make eye contact with the drivers before crossing and use the signals if there is one.

If you are out landscaping, please take a look at the area around your
fire hydrant. The Town of Superior has adopted the 2012 International Fire Code. Fire code requires a 36” circumference around the hydrant to remain clear for fire department access. If you have a fire hydrant on your property it is important that you maintain this area and prevent dirt, vegetation and rocks from piling up or obstructing our ability to use the hydrant.
Thanks for your assistance keeping fire hydrants accessible!
