2018-2019 Staff Changes:

Carolyn Coyle It is with mixed emotions that I will be moving back East this summer, to be closer to family at this time. I will be returning to the school I've taught at in Marblehead, MA for the past twelve years. I have absolutely loved my time here with my students, families and the entire CCA Community. I am hopeful that my travels will bring me back soon!

Charlotte Janus Hello, Eagle community! I am so excited to join CCA this fall as the newest 2nd grade teacher! I am finishing up my masters degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of Denver. I’m originally from the suburbs of Chicago but just celebrated my first year in Denver his past March. Before realizing I was meant to be a teacher, I studied graphic design at Indiana University and worked as a professional designer for the past 5 years. When I am not having fun in the classroom I love hiking, traveling, immersing myself in a book, and planning for my upcoming wedding! I cannot wait to meet everyone and am looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!

It is bittersweet that I announce that Kristin Nowak, CCA Business Director, will be taking a sabbatical to spend more time with family and pursue her Doctoral degree in Education. After three years at CCA, Kristin and her family will be temporarily relocating to Southern California for her husband's job. While in California, Kristin will pursue her Doctoral degree through John’s Hopkins University in Educational Innovation.    While at CCA, Kristin was, among many other things, instrumental in coordinating the 2016-18 gym reconstruction project that will be opened this coming Friday. School Supply Sale

Uniforms will have to be purchased at Dennis Uniform.  A t-shirt from home will be needed for Art Class. Assignment books will be provided to each child as part of the PTO activity fee. Share the Love. Share a Book!!!

Spread the joy of reading to the Boys and Girls Club of Colorado and help CCA Alumni Maddie Ford earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. Donate your gently worn books for children of all ages, and Maddie will see that they get to kids who need them. Boxes will be located in the lobby during the school reading competition from April 23 rd through May 17 th . This is what CCA is about, literacy that grows minds and imaginations. Team up with Maddie and make a difference!

CCA's Annual Pennies for Patients Fundraiser

Student Council is participating in The Leukemia and Lymphoma Pennies for Patients program again this year. We are collecting money over the next three weeks to be donated on behalf of Cherry Creek Academy. This year, we thought it would be fun to create a bracket challenge to determine which class raises the most money. The winning team will receive a wonderful prize! Let’s get excited to help those in need!

Thank you for coming to the Masquerade Ball!  We saw lots of smiles and heard lots of laughter from all of our CCA kids! Thanks to all the parents who volunteered. Your dedication and hard work made this event a success!

Teacher/Staff Feature

Jane Andrus teaches reading intervention for grades K - 6. She has been at CCA for the past 18 years and has had many roles over the years including K/1 specials teacher, and teaching 1st and 2nd grades. She and her husband Dan were one of the founding parents of our school in 1995. She remembers all the work it took to get ready for the first day of school in September of that year. Each parent was so proud watching their children walk into that small school in the Denver Tech Center that they had worked so hard for. Two of her 4 children started that year one in 3rd grade and one in 1st grade.   The other two started several years later. All four of her children are now married and she has 2 special grandsons, Isaac and Nolan. She is so thankful for a wonderful family and husband of 35 years. She and Dan are going on an Alaskan cruise this summer to celebrate and look forward to doing some more travel in the years ahead.

Morley was born and raised in West Hartford, CT, but loves calling Denver home. She has been married 12 years and loves being a mother to her 3 kids, ages 4, 6 and 8. She enjoys the beautiful outdoors and loves skiing, running, or spending time with her friends and family. Morley Wittenberg is a special education teacher and has over 17 years of experience with teaching children with special needs. After she graduated from the University of Miami in Ohio, she relocated to Colorado. She then became a special education teacher in the Cherry Creek School District, while attending grad school to pursue a masters in special education. In 2000, Morley graduated with a master’s degree in special education from UCD. She currently has two schools, Cottonwood Creek Elementary grades K-5, and Cherry Creek Academy, and works with students in grades K-3 rd .

Julie Nygard grew up in the small town of Grafton, North Dakota. Julie teaches first grade at CCA. This is her eleventh year. Julie has two wonderful daughters and three adorable granddaughters. Julie wanted to be a teacher since she was a child. She often played school with her friends and dolls. Being a teacher is very rewarding. There is nothing better than seeing the look on a child’s face when he/she is able to do something for the first time. First graders are so much fun to teach. They are so eager to learn and they absorb information like a sponge. Julie’s hobbies include reading, exercising, sewing, spending time with family, and playing with her maltipoo.

Important Announcement from the Health Clinic

Finding AR Books Just Got a Little Easier

The BookScanner App makes it easy to find Accelerated Reader books on Apple  iPads and iPhones. Now your trip to the public library for your AR reading materials can be much more efficient. The app lets you know if a book has an AR quiz. Just scan the ISBN number on the back. You will also get the Reading level (ATOS BL) Number of AR points available for taking a quiz  Quiz number  It will also keep a history on each scanned book for easy reference, which you can delete at any time. Happy reading!

READ LIKE AN ANIMAL!!!      CCA K-6 TH GRADE READING COMPETITION

April 23 rd thru May 17 th Two teams, the Sly Foxes and the Wise Owls will compete in an all school reading competition to see which can earn the most Accelerated Reader points. Mr. Hargreaves and Dean Loomis will co-captain the parliament of Wise Owls while Mr. Cerny and Mrs. Nowak will co-captain the Skulk of Sly Foxes. (Yes! This is what groups of owls and foxes are called!) The Rules Teams must maintain an 85 percent or higher quiz average to receive full credit for all points that are earned. For example, if a team has an overall quiz average of less than 85 percent, then the total team points are multiplied by that average. A team with 1,000 points and an 80 percent quiz average will only receive 800 points of the 1,000 possible points. Students who do not adequately help their team earn points are ineligible for prizes. Students may only take tests in their designated reading range. An entire class may not take a quiz on the same book during the challenge period (except kindergarten).         Prizes will be awarded for every 750 AR team points earned. 750 Points – Stuffed Animal Day Bring your favorite stuffed animal to school. Giant stuffed animals are not allowed.The award date will be announce. 1,500 Points – Crazy Hair Day Fix your hair to look like an animal or just go crazy with it. The award date will be announced. 2,250 Points – Crazy Socks and Shoes Day Students may wear any hard-soled shoes with a back, as long as they are not open toed, flip-flops, Heelies, cleats or have a heel higher than 2 inches. The award date will be announced. 3,000 Points – Pajama Day Students may not wear tank tops, spaghetti straps, tight yoga pants or anything inappropriately revealing. Use the school dress code as a guideline. All students must wear hard-soled shoes. The award date will be May 18 th . The Ultimate Prize – The team with the most competition points will earn animal ball caps and wristbands that may be worn all day on May 18 th . The victors will also enjoy root beer floats during lunch recess. GO WILD ABOUT BOOKS!

Accelerated Reader 100 Point Club Students who meet the following requirements by the end of the year, become members of the 100 Point Club and are awarded a customized medal engraved with their name. Yearly Point Requirements by Grade Kindergarten - 45 AR points First Grade - 65 AR points Second Grade - 90 AR points Third through Sixth Grades - 100 AR points Seventh and Eighth Grades - 125 AR points Seventh and Eighth Grade students may take AR quizzes to earn points, even though they no longer have an Accelerated Reader requirement. The points and a cumulative quiz average of 85 percent must be earned by Friday, May 11 th . Former CCA alumni Emma Hope, holds the record, earning a whopping 2,004 points within one year. She was only in the fifth grade, at the time, and has held the record since 2009. That is long time! Is it time for a new record holder?

Volunteer Opportunities in the CCA Library Volunteers are needed to help with this year’s reading competition. Opportunities include purchasing and delivering ice cream cups, root beer, spoons and disposable glasses. Servers are also needed to hand out root beer and ice cream to students during recess on May 18 th from 10:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please let Mrs. Larson know if you are interested by emailing her at alarson@cherrycreekacademy.org . We Need You! Volunteer in the Cafeteria 10:40 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS A LUNCH EACH DAY.

Students DO NOT have access to a microwave; however, we do have hot water for the students who bring their own “Cup Noodles.” For clarification or to review CCA policies about lunch, please view pages 8-9 and 34 in the CCA Parent Student Handbook . This week Champions will be saying an early farewell to Ms. Subi!  Friday, May the 4th (be with you), will be her last day for the year. We wish her luck in her summer adventures, and hope to see her back next school year!

Champions will also be hosting a Parents Night Out event in the Parker area on Friday May 18th. The hours will be from 6pm-8pm. Attendance is free for new Champions families, and $10 for currently attending families. New Champions families will be eligible for a free week of child care (summer or fall) if they register with Champions by May 31st!

Summer Registration Champions is looking forward to some great activities and trips this summer! Thursdays will be our day for field trips, including the Butterfly Pavilion, Splash and Swim days, a Rockies game, the Zoo, Putt-Putt, as well as local parks and resource centers. The kids will also enjoy on site visits from Mad Science, the Fire Department, local museums and more.  Teachers will also be leading weekly activities in Garage Band, Yoga, Sports, and Fitness. We will have kid-formed club activities on Mondays. Each regularly scheduled day will include individual and group activities based on weekly themes. Please see the board posted at Champions, or contact Jasper for more details. You can register online in your parent account. Summer program will be held here at CCA, and hours will be 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday- Friday. We will be closed July 4 th . We will be hosting other schools here as well, and we anticipate some of these other schools will have a high enrollment. Champions Summer Break Daily hours are officially 7am-6pm . This should give most of you enough time to drop-off and pick-up around your work schedules. (Hours may have been wrongly quoted previously, apologies!) If you plan to use Champions for summer break, please enroll online ASAP. Please sign up as soon as you can to ensure a spot! If you have questions, please ask Mr. Jasper ! TRAFFIC/SAFETY: JHL has planned ahead to minimize the impact to normal school operations, including traffic. Morning drop off and afternoon pick up will not change. JHL has scheduled all deliveries and truck/equipment traffic outside of our drop off and pick up times. JHL created a safety video for our website, highlighting the efforts JHL takes to separate students from the construction as well as their thorough background checks for their employees, and other important efforts being taken to ensure a safe construction site.  Here is the safety video .    JHL, DCS, RTA architects, and CCA leadership meet and discuss new construction tasks that involve safety matters at weekly Owner, Architect, Constructor meetings to ensure the safest site possible.
