Speaking of lonely...

This bottle has been lonely since April, when it was left behind at the S.T.A.R. Center after our April HIPMC meeting.
Is it yours?
It's been soaking up the view from MCDPH and has a spectacular vantage point of monsoons rolling in. Still, it's lonely and would like to go home.

If your home is where it belongs, email Seth.

Good Read
Strong ACA = Stronger Breastfeeding Rates

"Several studies have shown that the (ACA's) provisions - giving moms access to lactation consultants, breast pumps, and time and space at work to pump their milk until as much as a year after birth - have contributed to rising breastfeeding rates in the US.

"...Now women's health and breastfeeding advocates worry that we might be poised for a reversal of this trend."

Good Read (Long)
Health, Racism, and Kiarra

"I spent nearly a year reporting in Sandtown and other parts of Baltimore. What I found in Kiarra's struggle was the story of how one person's efforts to get better-imperfect as they may have been-were made vastly more difficult by a daunting series of obstacles.

"But it is also a bigger story, of how African Americans became stuck in profoundly unhealthy neighborhoods, and of how the legacy of racism can literally take years off their lives."

Good Read (Short)
Putting Human-Centered Policies Into Action

"Sometimes, a bad policy leads to government failure to deliver a service. Sometimes a policy seems good but the ways it gets delivered fails. And sometimes a policy could be great but it is not designed with the delivery in mind, which makes both the policy and the delivery fail. This is a fixable problem.

"Many cities have started applying design-thinking best practices to processes used to deliver services to meet residents needs. Less discussed but equally important is applying design thinking to policies to meet residents needs.

"Which is where civil servants like Tishaura Jones come in."

Metrics
Making Neighborhood-Disadvantage Metrics Accessible

"Health interventions and policies that don't account for neighborhood disadvantage may be ineffective or provide only limited benefit.

"For example, a diabetes education program will do little to reduce disparities in diabetes control if participants live in substandard housing and lack access to a refrigerator for insulin storage."

Discover the new Neighborhood Atlas, which visualizes neighborhood disadvantages at various levels.

Strategies
The Water of Systems Change

Foundations involved in systems change can increase their odds for success by focusing on the least explicit but most powerful conditions for change, while also turning the lens on themselves.

The Water of Systems Change aims to clarify what it means to shift these conditions. The "inverted triangle" framework is an actionable model for funders and others interested in creating systems change, particularly those who are working to advance equity.
