Everyone wants a nice-looking lawn.  There are many things we can do to ensure we have a lush and green lawn.  Experts say native grasses are indigenous to a particular region's soil conditions and rainfall, which makes it naturally resistant to diseases and pests. Native grasses need less water than non-native grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, which is originally from Europe, or St. Augustine grass, originally from Africa. Look for species that are native to your region for best results.

This month we have included some tips and information we tend to forget when planning our lawn care for the season.

Happy spring!

Backyard bucket list:  Seed, weed, feed

Everyone longs for a lush, green lawn, but many homeowners aren't sure how to achieve it.  A strong green lawn can give back to you in so many ways, and getting there is easier than you think.  The lawn health experts at Scotts say the keys to a great lawn are seed, weed, and feed.

Seed
When spring temperatures reach 60 degrees or higher, seeds will germinate best, and it's time to repair winter damage.

Patch and repair your lawn to fill in bare spots, help crowd out weeds and strengthen your grass to help withstand heat and drought.  Start by removing debris and dead grass in the surrounding area, and loosen hard soil; this will help grass seedlings take root.

Evenly apply a quality seed, such as Scotts EZ Seed, so the bare area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible.  Apply only the recommended amount so the seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients.

Weed
Preserve your beautiful lawn by keeping it free of weeds.  Common weeds such as dandelions and clover can choke out healthy grass.  Therefore, it's important to address weeds in spring so they won't have a chance to thrive in summer.

Get rid of weeds by using a weed control product, such as the improved Scotts Turf Builder Weed and Feed.  It is formulated to be stronger than the previous formula to kill weeds and feed grass to make it green and thick.

Feed
Continuing to feed your established lawn is critical to its nutrition and overall success.  Your lawn requires feeding about every six weeks, and its nutritional needs will vary throughout the season.

Choosing the right food at the right time can help ensure that your lawn stays thick and green.  For example, if your yard needs a boost toward the end of spring, use Scotts Green Max Lawn Food.  This product provides your lawn with essential nutrients, like iron, that give grass its rich green color in just three days.

No two lawns are alike.  A number of factors, including where you live or whether you have a sunny or shady backyard, affect how to treat your grass.

More tips to prevent lawn damage this summer.

  • Lack of sunlight - If lawn is shady, you may want to explore shade-tolerant varieties of grass, or alternative landscapes for those areas.
  • Chemical spills - Carefully refill lawn-mower gas tanks and fertilizer spreaders on the sidewalk or driveway to avoid overflow onto the lawn.  If spills occur, promptly flood the area with water to dilute the chemical.
  • Foot Traffic - This can lead to compaction and spots of dead grass.  Try to redirect the traffic, or create a pathway with pavers, gravel, or concrete.
  • Debris - Leaving a tool or any debris on the lawn can quickly suffocate the grass beneath and cause it to die quickly.
  • Mowing patterns - Running the mower in the same pattern over and over can cause ruts that lead to damage, so avoid mowing in the same direction on consecutive cuts.  Avoid mowing on very hot days or when the lawn is soggy.  Both can cause tracks.
  • Mowers - Dull lawn-mower blades can damage lawns, as can mowing too fast.  Grass blades can be torn, snapped and more, resulting in brown spots on the lawn.

Pasta, Pancetta and Peas

Ingredients
16 ounces fettuccine
8 ounces pancetta, diced
1/2 onion, chopped
1 (10 oz.) bag frozen peas
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1/2 lemon, juiced

1.)   Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over medium heat.  Add pasta and cook until al dente.  Drain pasta, reserving 1 cup of pasta water.

2.)  Meanwhile, saute pancetta in a large saucepan over medium-high heat until golden and crisp, about 6 minutes.  Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.  In the same pan, saute onions until softened, about 5 minutes.  Add peas and garlic and saute for 3 minutes.  Stir in Parmesan, pasta and pancetta.  Moisten pasta with a little of the reserved pasta water.  Toss to incorporate, season with salt and pepper, if necessary, and serve, sprinkled with lemon juice.
