PRESIDENT'S CORNER
I was traveling again in September...this time to Oregon to visit our daughter in Portland. As always when traveling, I try to get into some of the local libraries to see what they have to offer. She lives in walking distance of the North Portland Library - the current building was built with Carnegie Corp. funds in 1913, although library services existed in this area since 1909. It's a lovely building; in 1996 the voters of Multnomah County passed a $28Million General Obligation bond to improve technology at all County Libraries and to renovate deteriorating buildings such as North Portland. Below is a photo of the outside of the building on a very busy street.
The inside of the building, although renovated to accommodate an elevator to the second floor and other ADA access throughout, was newly designed to reflect the historic nature of the building - as you can see from this interior shot. I just love the lighting! It was interesting to note that they have just instituted a MakerSpace program for teens...that seems to be a growing trend across the country.
If you've visited the Library recently, you may have noticed a change in opening hours for the Atascadero Library (along with Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo). The new hours are -- Monday through Thursday, 10am-6pm and Friday and Saturday, 10am-5pm. This change starts on Monday, November 5

Our next art exhibit, beginning in December,
will feature the work of
Janice Pluma, a local artist who specializes in abstract acrylics.
Pluma trained as a graphic artist at Cal Poly and founded Warpaint Graphics, a successful graphic design business. Five years ago she returned to her original dream and began to paint full-time.
Pluma loves to use found objects in her work. With her abstract style she captures life's many transformative experiences.
Please join us for a reception on Thursday, December 6, at 5 p.m. to meet Janice Pluma and enjoy her art. Light refreshments will be served

ALICE'S BOOK STORE NEWS

Hello from Alice's Bookstore,
The 3
rd Tuesday of the month Pop-up Sales are the BOMB!
We are having so much fun with this new event. Here's the deal - each month on the 3
rd
Tuesday we close the store for an hour, stock up the shelves and then re-open at 3pm for the sale.
AND EVERYTHING IS JUST .25 CENTS!
Our sale in October brought in $128.50 and we sold 514 items. That means we can bring lots of new things from our store room for you to check out as you start your holiday shopping. The 3
rd
Tuesday Sale also includes a healthy assortment of 'coffee table' type books as well.
In the month of October we also welcomed 2 new volunteers, Patti Garcia and Roseanne Millward. Welcome ladies and we hope to see you manning the bookstore in the coming weeks. As they join the ranks of bookstore volunteers we are always happy to add to our numbers. Please see the Volunteer Information Form for more information and to sign up to volunteer! Just complete and leave with a store volunteer or someone at the Library circulation desk. Remember, for each shift you work you can choose a book for your own!

Tickets for "Atascadero's Dancing with Our Stars" will be on
sale January 14th online only
at:www.AtascaderoDWOS.org.
Tickets will be $85 per person and include Opolo wine, Central Coast Brewing beer, a silent auction, Pacific Harvest catered buffet dinner and the most stellar show of the year!
The 2019 show theme is "Atascadero Time Machine: Back to the 80's" professionally scripted and directed by Molly Comin.
The event will showcase fabulous dance routines, costumes, vocals and theatrics.
Due to the popularity of this highly acclaimed community event, Friends of the Atascadero Library are hosting the dinner show three nights: March 21, March 22 and March 23, 2019 at the Atascadero Pavilion on the Lake.

Hello, my name is Charlene "Charlie" Arthur. I am the
Teen and Adult Services Librarian at t
he
Atascadero Public Library. I was born and raised in the Federated States of Micronesia, island of Pohnpei. I grew up in the service industry, where I helped out with the family business (the Village Hotel) that my Grandparents built and ran for around 50 years. I have an MLS from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where I also worked in the campus library for the past 5 years. Three interesting things about me is that I am the eldest of 7 daughters, I love seafood, and I am a Harry Potter fan.
Charlie will be taking a lead part of our
A-Town Create Space
team working to gather information from local teens. During the next 6-8 months we will be hosting more creative programs to find out what the teens want to do in their space at the library. This past summer we offered programs relating to flight with drones, origami, virtual reality, and a variety of Maker kits. This fall we will offer these programs and more as Charlie begins to develop relationships and gather helpful information from the teens.
On November 5, 2018 the 3 large branches of the San Luis Obispo Library system will be slightly changing hours. Atascadero, San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande Libraries will close at 6:00pm Monday through Thursday, instead of 7:00pm. Friday and Saturday hours will be the same 10am-5pm. Full-time staff will have one schedule of 9am-6pm and will use the time to plan new programs and develop more services for everyone. We understand that any schedule change affects our patrons, and we always want to stay open as much as possible; 6:00-7:00pm was the slowest hour, so that was the natural choice for closure. Accommodations will be arranged with organizations that have after hours reservations to use the 2
nd floor room(s).

membership categories and reflect current patterns of enrollment.
- Individual levels remain at $12 a year
- Family levels increase to $25 a year
- Business and Sustaining levels will be eliminated
- Benefactor levels remain at $100 a year
- Life levels remain at $1000 a year
