Children & Youth Fund invests
in
Spring Grant Cycle
Five grants were made by our Children & Youth Fund to support programs seeking funding in our Spring Grant Cycle. This grant cycle supports youth, aging, animal welfare and environmental preservation and we receive the most applications for youth programming. See all the Spring Grants!
Susan Van Sickle and MaryLu McPheron represented this fund on the grant cycle review team, carefully reviewing the youth related applications to determine which to recommend to the full Children & Youth fund advisory committee. Their hard work resulted in these grants:
- $1,000 Varna Community Center: Safe Landings in Varna
- $2,500 Golden Opportunities: GO tutoring and mentoring
- $2,500 Hangar Theatre: Project 4 - Artists in the Schools
- $3,170 Musicians for World Harmony: Can we talk, rap or sing?- Building bridges between refugees/immigrants and American-born students
- $4,000 Trumansburg Robotics Team FRC 5254: Expanding Fabrication Capabilities Initiative

Board Member Spotlight
Ben Renberg, Board Member
Brings Community Foundation Experience from Houston
Ben Renberg joined Community Foundation's Board of Directors in January, but he is no
stranger to the world of community foundations. Before moving to Ithaca in the fall of 2016,
Renberg volunteered with the Greater Houston Community Foundation and served on its
nominating and development committees.
Shortly after becoming senior associate vice president of Alumni Affairs and
Development at Cornell, Renberg readily accepted an invitation from Community Foundation
Board Chair, Susan Murphy, to step onto the board. "With my background serving on community
foundation committees and volunteer boards in the past, this just seemed to be a natural fit," he

Cornell CIPA Students Research Legacy
The Susan Christopherson Community Planning Fund
Susan Christopherson was a professor of city and regional planning at Cornell, known for her scholarly work and expertise on regional economic development. She died in December of 2016 and her will designated money to start the Susan Christopherson Community Planning Fund.
Three CIPA students from Laurie Miller's,
Public Engagement and Capstone Class, researched community planning models, interviewed diverse community stakeholders and made recommendations for future investments from this fund. T
he Community Impact Committee is currently reviewing their recommendations and using information provided to stimulate broader conversations around community impact planning.

NCRP Explores the Power of Funders
Lisa Ranghelli from National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, visited Ithaca and presented an overview of their new publication,
"
Power Moves: Your Essential Philanthropy Guide for Equity and Justice
" of which she was the lead author. It
is a complete self-assessment toolkit for foundations and other funders to determine how well they are building, sharing and wielding power and to identify ways to transform programs and operations for lasting, equitable impact.
The Community Foundation was joined by several other local funders for this dynamic session. It was well received and we look forward to further exploring this topic together.
