We believe action in Congress is critical to addressing climate change, and that Congress won't act unless they hear that we, their constituents, want them to act.
Congressional offices tell us that they don't hear often enough about climate from their constituents, and so they think it is not a priority. But we can change that.
Please take a few minutes to write or call your members of Congress and ask them to take action now to build a clean and prosperous future for all. This simple action sends a clear message to Congress and is a great step in getting more empowered in our democracy.

Study finds weed killer in beer and wine x
The last thing you want to think about when you pour yourself a glass of wine or a cold beer is whether it contains even small levels of a potentially carcinogenic weed killer.
But the use of glyphosate, the main ingred-ient in Monsanto's Roundup, is now so wide-spread that the chemical is found virtually everywhere -- including, as a Feb. 22 U.S. PIRG Education Fund report found, in 19 of 20 beer and wine products we tested.
"No matter the efforts of brewers and vint-ners, we found that it is incredibly difficult to avoid the troubling reality that consumers will likely drink glyphosate at every happy hour and backyard barbecue around the country," Kara Cook-Schultz, author of the report and director of our national Zero Out
Toxics Campaign, told USA Today.
U.S. PIRG is calling on federal, state and local officials to ban the use of glyphosate unless and until it can be proven safe.
For more see U.S. Pirg on our website.

Despite the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) own research, it's still allowing growers to water crops with contaminated water.
The FDA just concluded that the November 2018 nationwide E. coli outbreak in romaine lettuce was most likely the result of dirty agricultural water. 1 This outbreak sent dozens of people to the emergency room. But it's still legal for growers to water crops with E. coli-tainted water.
This has to stop.

 President's Message

A Republic-if You Can Keep It

Choose the word to fill in the blank to the following sentence:   "Every day, I am _____________ with   emails, facebook posts, and other social media urging me to sign petitions,  call my congressperson, write postcards, and attend political events.

A.   Bombarded

B.    Annoyed

C.    Overwhelmed

D.    Blessed

E.    All of the above

It's easy to select A, B, or C.   But I think D is the best answer.  Here's why.  True representative government is a rare social phenomenon.   It is a gift.   But its continued existence depends on our continued labor in its defense.
230 years ago when the founders of our nation hammered out the Constitution, there were misgivings.  Benjamin Franklin, usually an optimist, in his final remarks at the Constitutional Convention  said   "This [the constitution] is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done  before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other."   As he left Independence Hall on the last day of the Convention,  a woman asked Franklin "What have we got, a republic or a monarchy."  Franklin's response:  " A republic-if you can keep it."

No person can do everything, but every person can do something.   Whether it is writing postcards for a candi-date,   marching on Earth Day, or standing for election for the local school board, each of us can act to protect our freedoms and improve   our institutions.

There   are many choices.    Choose those activities which bring you the greatest joy.   But choose something.    It's a democracy-but only if we work to keep it.

VOTER REGISTRATION / OUTREACH

The Voter Outreach Committee will have a planning meeting at on Saturday, March 30th, at 9:00am at Depoe Bay Coffee. Rosemary Dukelow, chair of PCDP Voter Outreach, will attend this meeting and share whatever plans and needs the PCDP has for voter outreach.

Join us to learn about new opportunities
in voter outreach.

COMMUNICATIONS

The committee has initiated a new mechanism, called the Forum, which will run as a regular item on the AADC website. The website will accept items for posting about local and political issues. All items will be vetted for appro-priateness and may be subjected to editing. Importantly, a comment section will allow interested readers to express further views on the subject.
The first two articles have been posted and can be seen by going to the AADC website and clicking on Forum. The first is on health insurance options based on Medicare expan-sion by Marty Neft, MD. The second is on the election issues created by the move of Republican Ted Gaines from his state senate seat to the state Board of Equalization. Have a look at both of these.  web site
Also have a look at the AADC Facebook page, now overseen by Karen Martin, with the assistance of Jan Bell.
Finally, the committee is always interested in topics or speakers for our member meetings on the first Thursday of the month. If you have questions or responses to any of these, send them to [email protected] .

PCDP FUNDRAISER

May 17th - Congressman John Garamendi
to speak at Roosevelt-Kennedy dinner -                           AADC Subsidized tickets
The 8th Annual Roosevelt-Kennedy Dinner will be held Friday May 17th, 6:30 pm, at the Orchard Creek Ballroom in Lincoln .
The honorable John Garamendi will be the keynote speaker. If you haven't heard Congressman Garamendi speak, you are in for a treat as he epitomizes an honest, hardworking public servant who puts his constituents first!!
Congressmen like Garamendi are rare in today's political environment.
The Auburn Area Democratic Club will be reserving several tables at this event so our folks can sit together.  Also, AADC has budgeted to subsidize 11 tickets at half price for our members who find the $75 ticket price prohibitive.
In order to sit with your fellow AADC friends, and/or to ask for an AADC subsidy, please do not order your tickets directly from Placer County Democratic Party.  Instead, send your ticket reservation to Jan Bell at [email protected](that's a lower case L in between the j and b).  Tell Jan in your email: 1) how many tickets you want; 2) If you want an AADC subsidy at $37.50 or if you can pay the full $75 ticket price; and lastly 3) what entree(s) you want: choices are salmon, chicken or vegetarian.
Act fast as we expect this event to sell out!!  In the past AADC reserved 2 tables (20 attendees), but this year we'd like to have 3 tables so 30 AADC folks can attend.
Once Jan receives your request she'll send you an email acknowledgement that your tickets are reserved.  Bring your checks for the event, made payable to AADC, to our upcoming April 4th or May 2nd meeting or mail your check into AADC, P. O. Box 6851, Auburn, CA 95604.  AADC will pay PCDP for all tickets, so you need to reimburse AADC for your tickets.
About a week before the event Jan will send you a reminder to attend with directions.  Your tickets will be waiting for you at Will Call at the event. Jan Bell, Chair, Placer County Democratic Party Campaign Services Committee

Placer Democratic Action Network

The Placer Democratic Action Network (PAN) is dedicated to making a difference in our community. We have a two-pronged approach--political activism and community service.

Our Precinct Captain Program represents our primary commitment to political activism.
Working within a precinct to build relationships with voters is not a new concept, but it is one that has fallen out of practice. We aim to reactivate and revitalize this effective strategy to build upon the foundation of grassroots energy and enthusiasm throughout our area. We are offering another train-ing opportunity for prospective precinct captains. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us on Saturday, June 8th, from 10 to 2. Our training will be held at the Placer Democratic Headquarters in Roseville.

For those looking for other ways to contribute to our community, Placer Action Network sponsors regular community service opportunities with the Placer Food Bank and the Sacramento Blue Star Moms.

You can learn more about us at our website. Follow us on Facebook and on Twitter @placeractionnet. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, 6:30 PM at Democratic HQ in Roseville.  Join us!

ELECTION 2020

Placer County Democrats begin recruitment for           2020 Placer County elected positions!
A Committee of 18 Democratic activists from across Placer County are meeting monthly now to begin recruitment for local positions on the 2020 ballots! There are 149 positions in Placer County that will be up for election/re-election in 2020.  Thirty-six of these positions (24%) are currently held by Democrats, so we have a long way to go to obtain better representation in our County's elected positions.
The Placer County Democratic Campaign Services Commit-tee will be 1) recruiting local progressives candidates to run; 2) training candidates in early Fall 2019 how to run their campaigns; 3) supporting Democrats who choose to run with signatures in lieu so they don't have to pay filing fees and fund where we can their candidate statement fees so it appears on every ballot and 4) endorsing Democratic candidates and promoting their candidacy across the County prior to 2020 elections.
If you have someone who you think would be a good candidate to run for positions in the Auburn Area (from Applegate down to Newcastle), send an email to Jan Bell at [email protected]
and she'll ask someone on the Committee to approach that person about running.  Many thanks in advance for your help finding solid progressive candidates to run in 2020 right here in Placer County!!
Jan Bell, Chair, Placer County Democratic Party Campaign Services Committee, AD5 Delegate to California Democratic Party and AADC Representative to PCDCC
