How Blockchain Could Help Lower Health Costs
In the continuing push for affordable health care, one of the biggest stumbling blocks is still the confused and error-filled manner in which electronic data is shared among doctors, insurers, hospitals and patients.
One solution could be blockchain technology.
In the current tangle of incompatible records systems that typifies U.S. health care, incorrect information can creep in when patient data gets re-entered multiple times by doctors’ offices, insurers and hospital staff. Big errors can seriously affect the quality of care that patients receive, small discrepancies can result in wrongful denials of insurance coverage, and errors of all types add to the system’s cost.

NIH study explains why opioid therapy may not always work well for chronic pain
Researchers have shown that pain-induced changes in the rat brain’s opioid receptor system may explain the limited effectiveness of opioid therapy in chronic pain and may play a role in the depression that often accompanies it. These findings clearly show the impact of chronic pain on the brain and its relation to depression. The study, conducted by scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and colleagues from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, was published in the journal Pain.
“We know that people with chronic pain have reduced availability of opioid receptors — the molecules opioid drugs bind to — in the brain,” said Mark Pitcher, Ph.D., visiting fellow in the Division of Intramural Research at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) and one of the authors of the study. “What we haven’t known ― until now ― is why. Are there preexisting brain differences that might predispose some people to develop chronic pain? Or might chronic pain cause these differences? Our findings suggest that chronic pain itself is responsible.”

Midwest SIPP Meeting June 9-10 in Chicago
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to an exciting new Interventional Pain Meeting, the First Annual Midwest SIPP Meeting. Midwest SIPP is in collaboration with Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Iowa Societies of Interventional Pain Physicians. This meeting will invite participation from physicians from all of these states, plus, academic and private practice physicians from across the United States.
We hope to foster a collegial environment where all the practicing fellowships can interact and share ideas with other academic and private physicians. The first meeting will take place in Chicago, Illinois, June 9-10, 2018. Our goal is to present cutting edge, information to practitioners of all levels and provide a forum to interact and discuss evidence based medicine to improve the quality of care and access to care for patients. There will be many opportunities for you to network with colleagues from across the Midwest and the United States, and attend educational sessions to expand your knowledge on current available treatment options to patients and practitioners.

Supervised Injection Sites Hailed as the Latest Strategy to Fight the Opioid Crisis
As the opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities around the country, a new strategy is coming to the United States, even though it is currently against the law.
Supervised injection sites are spaces overseen by medical staff, where people have access to clean injection equipment when using drugs. Trained healthcare professionals at these sites provide visitors with treatment information, counseling, and access to medical care. Under federal law, however, these sites are considered illegal.

The Role of Hospitality in Medicine: Learnings from a Restauranteur
One of the cornerstones of practicing medicine is paying attention to the needs of the patient. Medical assistants, EMTs, RNs and any number of professions have been taught from day one that healthcare is a service. While this is true, I would argue that we should be looking at the medical profession as one of hospitality and not just service.
Service is what we do for the patient. Our services include fixing fractures, diagnosing illness and managing chronic disease. Where we need more focus is in hospitality – the empathy of the situation, the ability to influence a perception or frame of reference in a positive manner, the ability to do things that are not driven by our egos but for the patient and their families.

Pain physician admits to collecting $470k in illegal kickbacks: 6 details
Michael Frey, MD, a former physician at Fort Myers, Fla.-based Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists admitted to defrauding Medicare and Tricare,
News Press
reports.
Here's what you should know.
1. Dr. Frey pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud May 18. Investigators said he collected more than $470,000 for prescribing specific equipment and pain medications between 2010 and 2016.
2. Dr. Frey paid medical supplier A&G Spinal Solutions $50,000 to add his wife to their payroll and give her 10 percent of profits from equipment referrals he made to them, according to investigators.
Doctor Convicted in $8.9 Million Health Care Fraud Scheme
A federal jury found a physician guilty today for her role in a scheme involving approximately $8.9 million in fraudulent Medicare claims for home health care and other physician services that were procured through the payment of kickbacks, were not medically necessary, not actually provided or, in some cases, were provided by the defendant, who was not a licensed physician during the conspiracy.
Acting Assistant Attorney General John P. Cronan of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider of the Eastern District of Michigan, Special Agent in Charge Timothy Slater of the FBI’s Detroit Division and Special Agent in Charge Lamont Pugh III of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General’s (HHS-OIG) Chicago Regional Office made the announcement.
Millicent Traylor, 47, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, was convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud, one count of conspiracy to pay and receive kickbacks in connection with Medicare beneficiaries, and five counts of health care fraud following a four-day trial. Sentencing has been scheduled for Sept. 27, before U.S. District Judge Robert Cleland of the Eastern District of Michigan, who presided over the trial.
Drug Maker Pfizer Agrees to Pay $23.85 Million to Resolve False Claims Act Liability for Paying Kickbacks
Pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Inc. (Pfizer), based in New York, NY, has agreed to pay $23.85 million to resolve claims that it used a foundation as a conduit to pay the copays of Medicare patients taking three Pfizer drugs, in violation of the False Claims Act, the Justice Department announced today.
When a Medicare beneficiary obtains a prescription drug covered by Medicare Part B or Part D, the beneficiary may be required to make a partial payment, which may take the form of a copayment, coinsurance, or deductible (collectively copays). Congress included copay requirements in the Medicare program, in part, to encourage market forces to serve as a check on health care costs, including the prices that pharmaceutical manufacturers can demand for their drugs. Under the Anti-Kickback Statute, a pharmaceutical company is prohibited from offering, directly or indirectly, any remuneration—which includes paying patients’ copay obligations—to induce Medicare patients to purchase the company’s drugs.
