The City of Mercer Island is pleased to announce the appointment of Jessi Bon as the new permanent Parks and Recreation Director. She will begin employment on August 1, and replaces former Director Bruce Fletcher, who retired in April 2018.

Jessi has over 20 years of experience in municipal government and a strong passion for public service. Over the last two years she has served as the Deputy City Manager for the City of Sammamish, and prior to that was its Director of Parks and Recreation for 10 years.

"This is an exciting and challenging time for our Parks and Recreation Department and the entire City. I believe Jessi will provide the solid experience, positive and imaginative attitude, and steady leadership that will carry the Parks and Recreation Department, and our City, into the future. I look forward to welcoming her to our organization," said  Julie Underwood, Mercer Island City Manager.

Congratulations to the Mercer Island School District for once again having multiple schools rank highly in the King County Green Schools Program, which helps schools and school districts engage students and employees in learning about and practicing resource conservation. The program provides hands-on help and the tools that schools need, such as recycling containers and signs, to make improvements.

This spring, the program recognized 83 schools for their exemplary conservation practices, and 58 percent of the K-12 schools in King County outside the City of Seattle now participate.

Here on Mercer Island, Island Park and Lakeridge Elementary School s, and both the Middle School and the High School were recognized for continued multi-year performance in all three categories: waste reduction and recycling; energy conservation; water conservation and pollution prevention.   West Mercer Elementary and the new Northwood Elementary School also appear in the rankings.

In just 10 days, the nomination window for the  Flash Family Inspirational Award (FFIA) closes on Friday, June 22.

The Award  honors a Mercer Island senior adult (55 and older) who exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship or community leadership, and who possesses an optimistic attitude and friendly demeanor while acting as a role model to others. The City invites all residents to nominate a citizen whom they think deserves to be recognized for embodying the spirit of this award.

The winning recipient of the FFIA rides as a "Hometown Hero" in the  Summer Celebration Parade  on Saturday, July 14, receives a gift, and has their name added to the perpetual plaque inside the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

Nomination forms are  available online or in person at the Community Center or the City's Youth and Family Services office in Luther Burbank Park. You can also request a form to be mailed by calling (206) 275-7754.
