Remembering Jeff

Man is a bird without wings and a bird is a man without sorrow.
                  - Louis de Benières,  Birds Without Wings

Today, we remember co-founder  Jeff  Dinsmore. Four years ago today, we lost him. On a beautiful sunny day in LA. Age 42. It seems like an eternity, and just yesterday.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer suggested we regard people "less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer."  One of the strengths born of Jeff's passing is The Crossing's collectively sharpened observation of how we view the suffering of others.  Trying to understand our own grief, we've made many pieces on that topic since he left: Seven Responses, Zealot Canticles, Born, un/bodying/s, Crossings Cycle, and more. It's become a thread that holds our work, our seasons, and our lives together.  A little Jeff Legacy, inviting us to dig a bit deeper, be a little more thoughtful, listen to each other.  One of many Jeff Legacies. He'd be so gleeful that next season culminates in the same way; a space ship, leaving an earth destroyed by humans, is thrown off course and heads out into the eternity of space.  How do those onboard feel?  We're making a piece about it. It's called Aniara. Jeff would be grinning.

Jeff read.  He loved Louis de Benières.  Sharing a bit of de Benières is like sharing a bit of Jeff - like a little whisper in our ear that we're not sure we heard; as if, for a moment, he may be here.

There comes a point in life where each one of us who survives begins to feel like a ghost that has forgotten to die at the right time.

We miss him.

We're grateful for our community. Thanks for being a part of it.
