July 23, 2018

Dear Friends,

The past several weeks have been busy at the County C ouncil. Council staff, my colleagues and I have been working hard on the Zoning Ordinance Rewri te legislation. Thank you to the many groups and individuals who have submitted comments online, via mail, and through oral testimony. A small group, including Council Members and staff, have been meeting regularly to review and address all  comments as they are received. Our scheduled work sessions have concluded, but you can still submit comments via the Council's  ZOR portal  or the mail. The portal contains a great deal of information, including the draft Zone Conversion Table .  Please stay involved in this process!

The Council has taken a strong stance against Governor Hogan's request to the Department of the Interior to transfer control of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway from the National Park Service to the State of Maryland. Read CR-28-2018 here and our letter to Gov. Hogan here.

I serve as the Council's representative on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's Transportation Planning Board. During our July meeting, TPB members voted to provide grant funding to the Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation to further expand Capital Bikeshare! Have you used one of the Capital Bikeshare stations in Riverdale Park, Hyattsville, Mt. Rainier or Largo yet? I'm excited to finally be connected to the regional bike share network.

Are you looking to purchase a home? Do you know someone who is? Check out the Prince George's County Purchase Assistance Program! Funded by the Housing Investment Trust Fund and administrated by the Revenue Authority, eligible home-buyers can receive up to $20,000 in 0% interest, deferred loans, which are paid back when the home is sold, transferred or ceases to be the primary residence of the buyer. Please spread the word!

Save the Date!

NBC4, Telemundo, and the Woodlawn/West Lanham Hills TNI Team are partner ing to host a Back to School event on Wednesday, August 8 at the Woodlawn Community Center, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. All welcome!

There will be food, music, activities, and more! Community partners are currently collecting backpacks and school supplies to distribute at the event. Look for donation boxes around the community at The Pancake House, Planet Fitness Landover, Metro Points Hotel, and more.

I'm a big fan of the Prince George's County Youth@Work/Summer Youth Enrichment Program and am happy to employ two District 3 youth in my office again this summer, Amara and Khalil. They both live in Lanham and attend Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

Learn more about this program by watching my Council Connection television segment on this opportunity and other workforce programs. In addition to summer employment, youth participate in comprehensive job readiness training offered through the County's partnership with the Prince George's County Community College and Prince George's County Public Schools.  Non-profit organizations and municipal governments can host interns through this program at no cost--student salaries will be paid through County funding! We are always seeking corporate partners as well. Please fill out the interest form today if you would like to host summer youth interns next summer.

As always, don't hesitate to reach out to a member of my staff or me if we can assist you in any way.

Together Strengthening our Community,
