Dear families,

Last night I had the opportunity to walk about our campus and see the array of activities that signal spring is here. There were softball, baseball, soccer and ultimate frisbee games going on despite the persistence of snow banks in our parking lot. Last year almost half of our students participated in interscholastic athletics and nearly two-thirds were involved in at least one co-curricular activity.

Whether it is Drama Club, Forensics, FFA, Model UN, Spanish Club, sports or one of our other organizations, being involved is healthy in so many ways. Being involved correlates with higher rates of achievement, lower rates of risky behaviors and yields data confirming that participation impacts feelings of self-worth and self-efficacy. There is something for everyone here at OHS. We have more than 45 organizations listed in our club registry and a full complement of sports as well.  If your child cannot find their thing, we encourage them to start their own. Senior Matthew L recently launched an auto enthusiasts club.

This week in particular is a time for our musicians, actors and artists to shine. We are in the midst of Fine Arts Week at OHS. All week long, the performances in the PAC allow students to showcase their impressive talents. Thank you to Mrs. Yancey for her work to arrange the complex schedules associated with this week. We appreciate the many ways in which our students can engage in life beyond the classroom to help them grow as individuals. We also appreciate the investment that our teachers, coaches and advisors make to provide these opportunities for our Panthers.

Bio-Tech goes to BTCI/Promega
Biotech 2 class field trip visited BTCI/Promega. Students extracted antibodies from chicken eggs and then used those antibodies to determine if the chickens had been exposed to salmonella and/or E. coli.
Lunch and Learn
A quality Academic and Career Planning system provides a way for students to continually explore various career areas. This year, we are excited to have implemented a Lunch and Learn program that will be another way to support students in their preparation for their future careers. Professionals are invited to meet with students during 5th and 6th lunch periods to share their "real-world" experiences. So far students have had the opportunity to meet with a veterinarian, EMS and fire professionals, operating engineers, and careers in shipping and receiving. Not only can students ask meaningful questions, but this is another way for them to connect their academic work to their future plans.

When all OHS staff build positive relationships with our students and collaborate purposefully to:
  • design engaging tasks that require critical thinking, reading, writing and problem solving;
  • give students ample opportunities, support and feedback;
  • measure and reflect on students' work; and
  • adjust plans and actions based on evidence of students' learning
Then all students will show growth as critical thinkers, readers, writers and problem solvers - skills for success at OHS and in future endeavors (college, career, and community).
