MCA conference

The 2018 conference in Kananaskis was a great place to network and to make new connections. There were almost too many great things to mention: from Todd Hirsch opening the event with his economic forecast to our informative AGM. We experienced amazing views on both the newly opened Kananaskis golf course and at the top of the Yates Mountain during the hike - and that just takes us to Friday afternoon!

We also had Graham Sherman who kept everyone in stitches and motivated us at the same time, as well as a truly passionate Denise Baril who spoke about networking. Plus, the amazing duelling Piano Kings ended the conference on a high note.

Learning Opportunities
June 19:  Cannabis awareness and worksite strategies course. Substance abuse and impairment are not new problems on construction work sites - but with the legalization of recreational marijuana in the near future, it is more important than ever that construction workers and managers effectively recognize and manage the safety risks of substance use, abuse and impairment. Click here for all information and registration.
June 20: Non-standard contract clauses - Can you afford to ignore them? This workshop by ACA is structured as an interactive exchange over the meaning and impact of non-standard clauses. This exchange will be followed by the participants responding to a tender containing a multitude of clauses and submitting a bid to the presenter who will analyze the bids and provide feedback. For all information click here.
June 21: Love my tender, love me true webinar. Since 2010, contractor legal rights regarding tenders have limited, yet the sense that bid shopping and other unseemly experiences have not been reduced. This seminar will review what legal rights you, as a subcontractor, might still have. For all information and registration click here.

Clarity on new labour code offers additional flexibility for employees

A number of partner associations met with Minister Gray regarding the lack of flexibility in hours of work averaging agreements. Based on dialogue with Employment Standards in a follow-up meeting, MCA wishes to advise employers an averaging agreement period can be for up to 12 weeks and this period can repeat for up to two years before a new agreement is required.

Please refer to section 23.1 of the Employment Standards code and the information found on the Employment Standards website

While averaging agreements require a work schedule, the schedule may be varied due to a variety of factors beyond the control of the employer, including weather (Section 16).

Safety - Priority One
Employee safety

"Your safety system has to be as strong as your worst day!" With much emotional and even more impact, Brent Radom, North Face Mechanical, with the assistance of Lorretta Bouwmeester, Mathews Dinsdale LLP, presented to the MCA AGM last week.

Hearing about the aftermath of a tragic workplace incident that led to the loss of a life in 2014, hit-home and resonated with the MCA members. MCA members learned first-hand how a serious workplace incident can impact your business and have very real personal consequences.

Our speaker touched on the value of having a safety program in place, installing GPS on employee's phones and vans and ensuring companies have a drug and alcohol policy in place. With June 1, being the date that OH&S laws come into play, it was a very timely presentation.

The speaker challenged the mechanical industry to unite in its efforts to turn down unsafe work and to keep your workers in pairs.

For more information about the OH&S laws please click here.
