Hosting the U15 Girls Ontario Cup

In April 2018, Durham Region welcomed nearly 600 athletes on 48 teams, across six divisions, for the Ontario Basketball 2018 U15 Girls Ontario Cup. The games took place at the Abilities Centre, Brooklin High School, Father Leo J. Austin High School, Sinclair Secondary School, and Maxwell Heights Secondary School.

Hosting an event like the Ontario Cup is all about creating a positive experience for athletes and visitors, both on and off the court, as well as great community collaboration in sport. The local basketball community came together to help to run competitions at the venues, including representatives from the Whitby Wildcats Basketball Club, Durham Lords, Academy for Student Athlete Development (A.S.A.D.) Durham, GladiatorS Basketball Club and the Durham Region Board of Approved Basketball Officials.

The athlete experience and engagement elements were organized by Sport Durham to create a warm welcome from Durham Region, and included player bags, the Sport Durham selfie stick social media contest in partnership with Ontario Basketball Association; the sharing of tourism materials for some off court relaxation and exploration time, and Central Counties Tourism Show Your Badge and Save Coupons.

As a premier sport tourism destination, we want athletes, coaches and their families to come play and stay with us. Sport Durham assists with all aspects of hosting sports tournaments and games, from bid development to venue co-ordination, participant experience and more! Workshop: Governance and Your Boardroom

You may think great sports management is all about programs and coaching. But the truth is, sport organizations thrive or die in their boardrooms. Well-functioning Boards of Directors create sports organizations that are well-planned, financially healthy and have productive staff and volunteers. But what does a good Board look like and how do you get there? Our partners at the City of Markham, in the York Durham Headwaters region, are hosting Governance and Your Boardroom at the Markham Pan Am Centre on June 19 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. This free workshop will cover the fundamentals of good governance, roles and responsibilities, look at real life examples of sports organizations, and address the value and importance of strong local sport club governance. To register for this session, visit the  event page on Eventbrite.
