The Summer Guide covers April, May, June and July.
  • The Bill to Reauthorize Lottery Proceeds for Parks and Recreation Until 2049 Has Passed the General Assembly and is Headed to the Governor's Desk for Signature.
Montrose had a big impact in helping this important outcome that will enable funding for another 25 years for future Montrose parks, school playgrounds, trails and recreation projects like the CRC Outdoor Pool (so long as we put forth a compelling case for funding).  Senator Don Coram was a co-sponsor of the bill and he and Representative Catlin both voted yes for re-authorization.   Also, endorsement from the School District, Montrose County, the MRD and the City of Montrose, as well as support from the Montrose Daily Press Editorial Board, all helped the cause.  Click here to see resolutions urging re-authorization from the City, County, the MRD and the Montrose County School District.  THANK YOU ALL!
  • Large School Groups are Visiting the CRC as Spring Begins!  End of the year and completion of testing celebrations are happening at the CRC this spring.  Please click here
to view the UPDATED schedule of large school groups.  We welcome the the many school groups from across the region and hope they have a great time.  We also make sure these youth understand that many other users are also in the CRC as the same time and we expect all to be respectful users of everyone's facilities.  The group that earns the most votes from MRD staff as the best citizens of their CRC will earn a free day pass for everyone in the school!  Please share with us if you have vote either way!
  • MRD is Partnering with Tri-County Health Network to Offer FREE Health Screenings at the CRC.
Every Thursday, starting May 24th, Tri-County Health's Community Health Worker Darlene will be doing FREE health screenings.  These will take place in the Child Watch area when Child Watch is closed (Child Watch hours are 8am to 12pm and 4pm to 8pm M-F and Sat. 9am to 12pm).  Screenings will be from 1230pm to 3pm to anyone in the community.  Like the lobby and the indoor playground, admission to the CRC is not required as this area is before Control and the Front Desk.
  • MRD's Largest Adult Program, Adult Softball, Begins Shortly!  The Registration Deadline is Here; Get Your Team Signed Up ASAP To Play and Officially Welcome Spring.
We offer Men's Leisure, Men's Competitive, Coed Leisure, Legends League (40+), and Coed Competitive, all of which come with a guarantee of 14 games.  New scoreboards were recently installed, the concession's building was repaired and the grass is greening up!  Come join in with America's past time re-live your little league glory days.  Questions, please contact Adult Recreation Coordinator Wade Ploussard at [email protected] or 249.7705.
  • Come Visit Your Montrose Field House and Outdoor Pool: It Is Just As Awesome As Your CRC!
For the field area, league and drop-in programs for youth and adults are in full swing this Spring.  See page 20 of the Summer guide to see the schedule, which may also be viewed below. For the latest, visit us on facebook by

MRD NEWS
Serving The Community
By: Tracie Rief, Customer Service Specialist
With our Rec District family, it is all about the service we bring to you and maximizing our contribution to Montrose! I was blessed with being hired in 2005 to work at the Aquatic center. We had one computer and a manual cash register. With the evolution of time, oh how the Montrose Recreation District has evolved! On hot summer days, we would have a line of people waiting to enter the pool that went out to the curb! Our Annual Pass memberships since that not so distant past have seen a growth of 1,208%. Would it not be something to see growth like that in our own financial investments?   Thanks to everyone that visits their recreation center! If you have not been, we would love see you and show you around your Community Rec. Center (CRC). We are here to serve you.
In this business of public recreation, we get the pleasure of contributing to the lives of so many in our community. We see the joy on the face of a child when he dives in the water with exuberance because he lost the fear of the water thanks to swimming lessons. Before long, he joins the swim team, becomes a lifeguard and then heads off to college! We see so many children grow from sitting in the outfield enjoying a butterfly and forgetting there is a ballgame going on, to an excited teenager playing at the high school level. We have had the privilege of being mentors, councilors and friends to many, from newborn babies to the senior population, from births, to weddings, to funerals. Our presence in your lives has truly been a great honor. Thank you.
We have collaborated with groups, organizations and many partners to improve the quality of life in Montrose. For example, many businesses have embraced our Corporate Partnership program. This gives the best possible deal on access to the 80,000 square foot facility, which includes such things as 58 different fitness classes per week. Studies have shown that employers who commit to the well-being of their employees create a more positive work environment. Through promoting active lifestyles with your team, you help to create a happier and healthier staff. This, in turn, increases productivity within your organization.
A big part of my job is providing quality customer service. We are dedicated to delivering quality customer service where no phone call or email gets left behind. We strive to provide empathy, patience, consistency, adaptability and clear communication. Do some things fall through the cracks? Yes, but we are continually striving to get better. The recent patron surveys, where we had over 900 responses, illuminated areas in which we need to improve, in customer service and throughout our operation. We thank these patrons tremendously for taking the time to provide us invaluable feedback. The past 16 months since our opening has been fast and furious. As we are settling into a groove, we are excited to work to further improve our operation, and these surveys provide critical data to do just this. Please look for a future column on the results of the survey and how we will use these responses to make your experience better.
Our Mission statement says it all: "The Montrose Recreation District's purpose is to provide, manage and maintain quality recreational facilities, programs and services, which will enhance the learning leisure and recreation opportunities that promote a healthy community."
Tracie Rief, Customer Service Specialist. Tracie is the manager of the front desk operation at Your CRC.

MRD FitZone

MRD Fit Zone Spotlight on TRX®

Have you peeked into the Fit Zone and wondered what the yellow, black, and gray straps hanging from the ceiling are used for? These straps are utilized for TRX® suspension training classes. TRX®, which stands for Total Body Resistance Exercise, was first conceptualized in 1997 by Navy SEAL Squadron Commander Randy Hetrick and was first created using a Jiu Jitsu belt and parachute webbing. It was initially used to help the SEALs condition their muscles to stay mission ready while on deployment away from training facilities. TRX® has come a long way since 1997 and has become a staple feature in most fitness centers around the globe. Commercial models now consist of locking carabiners, equalizer loops, quick adjust buckles, adjustable foot-cradles, antimicrobial handles, and multiple mounting configurations.

Despite technological advancements, however, TRX® training remains true to its roots relying on body weight positioning and core bracing to challenge all major muscle groups in a functional manner. Since resistance is increased or decreased by changing body positioning, the training modality is accessible to participants of all ages and fitness levels. Regular TRX® trainees generally notice improved ability to perform activities of daily living, reduced soreness during and after activities like skiing and running, improved conditioning and muscle tone, and improved core strength and mobility. MRD has enough straps for 20 participants and offers 6 TRX® classes per week, giving members and guests many opportunities to give suspension training a try. If you have not experienced the fun and challenging nature of a TRX® class, be sure to drop in to any of the TRX® classes offered in the Fit Zone. All experience levels are welcome and modifications are given. (History of TRX curtesy of trxtraining.com/our-history)

The MRD's Summer Enrichment Program receives a 2018 NRPA Rural Communities
Healthy Out-of-School Time Grant for $35,000
By Operations Manager Cos Sisneros

The Montrose Recreation District's (MRD) Summer Enrichment Program recently receive notice from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) that it was the recipient of a 2018 Rural Communities Healthy Out-of-School Time Programs Grant. The award amount is $35,000! At the suggestion of our local Colorado Parks & Recreation Association (CPRA), the MRD submitted an application for the 2018 Rural Communities Healthy Out-of-School Time Programs Grant from the NRPA, in partnership with the Walmart Foundation. On March 30, 2018, the MRD was informed that it had been selected to be one of ten rural communities, in Colorado, Kansas and Mississippi, to receive grant funding. This will support efforts around increasing access to meals, providing nutrition education and implementing healthy living practices and policies.

The MRD Summer Enrichment Program has been a staple summer youth program, dating back to the summer of 2001. The Summer Enrichment Program provides children, ages 6-10 years old (Summer Adventures) and 11-14 year olds (Club 1114), a variety of opportunities and experiences. These include outdoor recreation activities, indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts projects, sports activities, fitness and wellness, educational and nutrition literacy activities, field trips and much more.

Many new partnerships and services have come about through the efforts of the original 21
st Century Community Learning Center Program. In addition, our newly developed partnerships with the Black Canyon Gymnastics Day Camp, MES Summer Discovery Camp and Weehawken Creative Arts, will greatly enhance our efforts to provide an opportunity for all-day summer programming and activities for our Montrose families and their children! Over the years, our primary partnership has been and continues to be with the Re-1J Montrose County School District, who provides the facilities (this year at Pomona Elementary), for the MRD to offer and operate its Summer Enrichment Program.

In 2018, the Montrose School District will, once again, be providing the free Summer Nutritional Lunch Program, which is affiliated with the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), at the same location as our Summer Enrichment Program, Pomona Elementary School. The school district will also provide their free Summer Nutritional Lunch Program at another MRD facility this summer, the MRD Field House / Outdoor Pool facility. This will support the recreation district's effort and goal around increasing access to nutritious meals to our Montrose area youth. Thanks to NRPA, and come sign up for the best summer yet of Summer Enrichment!
