The findings are not surprising. The ACA marketplace continues to struggle. It's more vibrant in areas of the country with higher population density. Marketplaces with one or two insurers charge much higher prices than competitive regions.

Social Determinants of Health Impact Hospital Readmission Rates

March 20, 2019 post in
RevCycle Intelligence. New research in
Health Services Research shows (not surprisingly) that social determinants of health are linked to hospital readmission rates. Therefore, accounting for disability, housing instability, and other social risk factors in value-based purchasing models can help level the playing field for safety-net hospitals.

"HRRP penalties cost safety net hospitals millions of dollars each year, but aren't a fair reflection of their performance,"
Karen Joynt Maddox, MD, MPH, the study's lead author and Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Cardiovascular Division at
Washington University's
School of Medicine, stated in a press release. "Adding social risk factors to risk adjustment would be a significant step towards a more equitable program."

Fred Schulte and Erika Fry, reporting for Fortune (via KHN) on March 18, 2019, deliver a withering examination of the Electronic Health Records industry. The U.S. government claimed that turning American medical charts into electronic records would make health care better, safer, and cheaper, according to the authors. Ten years and $36 billion later, the system is an unholy mess.
