May 2018
Dear Colleagues,

If you had the chance to name the measures on which OPES would evaluate your performance, would you do it?

Guess what: you do!

Surprisingly, very few principals answered the first call for feedback on the revised Ohio Standard for Principals earlier this spring. So few, in fact, that Superintendent Paolo DeMaria insisted that ODE open another period for commentary to ensure that the revisions were fair, focused, and reflective of principals' true role in today's schools.

I know this is a busy time of year, but your input is needed. Your feedback is essential and will have far-reaching effects, so I encourage all OAESA members to take the time to read the revised standards and comment before May 11.

Sincerely,
Julie Davis, EdD

Beginning Administrators Mentorship Academy (BAMA) seeks mentors and entry-level principals for 2018-19

OAESA and OASSA have teamed up to build the principal pipeline! Thanks to an ODE grant, the BAMA program will pair seasoned administrators with first- or second-year APs and principals, in addition to providing professional development and associated costs. Read the program overview for complete details.

Interested in being a mentor? Register with this form by June 1.

Know a first- or second- year admin? Encourage them to apply for this invaluable opportunity by August 1.
Help children in your community by becoming a Summer Food Service Program site

This year, ODE wants to increase participation in summer meal programs and is actively seeking local nonprofit agencies--including schools--to participate by providing free meals to children. Expansion of the program is particularly needed in southern Ohio counties, where families struggle with food insecurity, as well as in rural communities and areas where migrant families reside. Sponsoring organizations receive reimbursement to cover the costs of providing nutritious meals and snacks to children in eligible areas. Nonprofit organizations and schools offering summer activities for children living in low-income areas also are encouraged to apply.

Any organization interested in becoming a sponsor or site should complete the potential sponsor survey. The Summer Food Service Program is funded by the US Department of Agriculture and administered by the Ohio Department of Education.
Winner winner!

Tamara Rau (Ayersville Elementary) and Tracy Wehner (Van Wert Elementary) were the lucky winners of OAESA's early conference registration giveaway! Each will receive $500 toward a classroom project at their schools.

We look forward to seeing our winners and you in June at Team Up! Superheroes for Kids.  Many thanks to OAESA's corporate partner Horace Mann and DonorsChoose.org for supporting the association.
