IN THE NEWS

Morgan Hill Police Department Receives
$561,649 Tobacco Law Enforcement Grant

The Morgan Hill Police Department recently received a grant award from the California Department of Justice for the Proposition 56 - Tobacco Law Enforcement Grant Program. The intent of this grant is to reduce and prevent the use of tobacco products among youth and teens. These includes cigarettes, vape pens, and electronic cigarettes using flavored tobacco products. The grant total is $561,649, to be expended over three fiscal years from FY 2018-19 through FY 2020-21. This grant is extremely competitive, and the City of Morgan Hill was one of the very few agencies in the state to receive full funding for our grant request. The Department of Justice indicated they received grant requests for twice the amount allocated for this grant.

Grant funding for the Morgan Hill Police Department includes salary and benefits to hire an additional School Resource Officer whose responsibilities will include trainings for students, faculty, and parents in both middle and high school on the dangers of tobacco use, tobacco related enforcement on school campuses and city-wide; conduct trainings for sworn personnel on tobacco-related issues occurring within our community and conduct retailer education sessions. Grant funds also include over-time hours for Police Officers and Multi-Service Officers to conduct city-wide enforcement activities at parks, events, and festivals. In addition to activities conducted by the Police Department, the grant includes funding for signage at City parks and facilities as well as a unique Peer-to-Peer education and outreach program. The Peer-to-Peer program will be designed and implemented by the City's Youth Action Council (YAC) with messaging that will reach both middle and high school students. Peer-to-Peer programs have proven successful in that educational campaigns of healthy choices and behaviors resonate more with youth rather than well-meaning adults.

Watering Day Changes in Morgan Hill Effective April 1st!

Water is always a precious resource in Morgan Hill and with this in mind, our permanent watering restrictions have been designed to best manage the City's potable water supply. These restrictions will help us avoid or minimize the effects of drought, climate change and the unreliability of the imported water infrastructure that serves the City of Morgan Hill.

From April 1, 2019 through October 31, 2019, watering is limited to three days a week.

  • Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for odd numbered addresses
  • Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays for even numbered addresses
  • No watering on Wednesdays
  • Irrigation is allowed before 9 AM or after 7 PM
  • Watering is limited to no more than 15 minutes per station

Complete rules and restrictions can be found in  Water Waste Ordinance No. 2236. Customers can report water waste  online or by calling the Water Waste Hotline at 408-310-4195. For more information, visit  mhvalueswater.com, email  [email protected] or call 408-310-4169. Thank you for conserving water!

DEVELOPMENTAL ASSET
OF THE MONTH

Asset #14: ADULT ROLE MODELS:
Parents and other adults model positive, responsible behavior

Tips to Help You Implement Asset #14:
Adult Role Models
  • Treat your youth with love and respect
  • Model appropriate behaviors. When you make mistakes, admit them. Apologize for failures.
  • Spend time together often. Be involved in your youth's life on a daily basis.
  • Ask your youth who are her/his role model(s) at school, after school program and/or sport teams, and why?
Visit the  Developmental-Asset-a-Month Calendar  for more tips!
Developmental assets are the positive values, relationships, skills and experiences that help youth and teens thrive. Young people with high asset levels are most likely to make healthy choices, while those with lower asset levels are more likely to get involved with negative or risky behaviors like violence, trouble in school, drug and alcohol use and more. The Search Institute of Minneapolis created the developmental assets framework. For more information, visit  www.search-institute.org
