PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Hope everyone is continuing to stay dry!
The long-range weather forecast has more rain coming to the Central Coast during March. Flooding is a problem for some of us. But being house-bound also means you can curl up with a good book and a cup of tea for a couple of hours. What are you reading at the moment? On my book pile is Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover. I've also become hooked on Louise Penny's series of mysteries with Armand Gamache as the police inspector. My "To Read" list grows longer every month! Where would I be without the local library?
Do you listen to Podcasts?
It seems to be growing in popularity throughout the country. Ten years ago, you needed to have access to a studio and complex recording equipment. Now anyone can sign in to website providers like anchor.com and provide information to the outside world. My daughter started a podcast at the beginning of the year called "Word Of The Week." She takes a word that perhaps most people have not heard very much, explains its origins and how it is used, and then interviews friends and colleagues to get their take on how they view the word. Have a listen sometime- here is the link! Another podcast from a friend is called, "Wait...What??"
You can listen to that by clicking here. In it, Paula and Elaine debunk many urban legends, conspiracy theories, etc. Podcasts are just another way we gain information - just like the old days when we would gather at Grandma's house to look at the Encyclopedia set.
There are lots of programs coming up in March and April at the Library for all ages - pick up one of the latest flyers and join the Library staff and the presenters.
Charlie, Sally and Jackie have lined up some fantastic events - including fun stuff for the Teens in our community, such as Mexican Tin Art Craft, Books to Movies on Friday afternoons ... and there is a Teen Advisory Board so that programs can be tailored to what the 10-17 year-olds really want at the Library, rather than the adults saying "this is what we'll do!"

Animal Friends in Art and Poetry

Beginning March 4, and continuing until the end of May, the Atascadero Library will host an exhibit that features the work of local poets and the engaging art of Jeri Edwards.
Edwards is a lover of nature and wildlife who advocates for wildlife conservation and education. She uses a variety of media, including collage, gouache and ink resist, and is a published poet as well. Our connections with animals will also be explored by local poets whose work is on display.
All are invited to meet Jeri Edwards and many other local poets at a reception at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. Light refreshments will be served.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW!!
Tickets for "Atascadero's Dancing with Our Stars" went on sale January 14th online at Eventbrite.com and sold out for Saturday night and nearly sold out for Friday with only 7 seats remaining! Fortunately, Friends of the Atascadero Library are hosting three dinner shows! Ample seating is available on Opening Night March 21st! Ticket sales close March 13th. Thank you, Leigh Livick, for managing the EventBrite ticket sales. Leigh has been involved with DWOS since its inaugural show in 2010.
Atascadero's DWOS event includes Opolo wine, Central Coast Brewing beer, silent auction, Pacific Harvest catered buffet dinner, dessert and the stellar show of the year!
The show theme is "Atascadero Time Machine: Back to the 80's!" professionally written and directed by Molly Comin.
The event will showcase fabulous dance routines, costumes, vocals and theatrics.
Molly has been diligently working with more than 40 dancers over the past several months that will perform in 80's themed vignettes featured between the community star dance routines.
Many of the vignette dancers are professionals blended with our past community stars, affectionately referred to as "All Stars." Once a star, always a star in my book!

ALICE'S BOOKSTORE NEWS

Greetings from the Bookstore!
When we welcome folks into our bookstore, we hope to make a sale, or a friend, but really we just want to help our Library. Sometimes there is only $7.00 in the deposit when the business day is done but more times than not there is more than $30. In January we were open 23 days with total sales of $1154 which means we averaged just over $50 daily. That is just amazing! We sold a total of 1147 items and if rounded up, that is another 50 for each day. Ha! In 2018 regular sales in the store generated nearly $13,000 and our book sales brought in $2100.
Speaking of book sales, if you haven't already heard, our 3rd Tuesday Pop-up Sales are back up and running again. Not only do we make about $125 each month we sell another 400+ items at each sale! Not bad for 2 ½ hours of work.
And so what does the money we raise pay for? I went to see Jackie, our Librarian, and she reminded me that the Bookstore money pooled with money raised at the Annual "Dancing With Our Stars" event pay for things like:
- Refreshments for many monthly programs, such as Craft Club, Friday Teen events, movie days, library volunteers, staff retirements and volunteer celebrations;
- Gift cards for our Teen Advisory Board, incentive for their participation;
- Supplementing various subscriptions - (@ $530 yr) such as:
Wall Street Journal, Thomas and Friends, this Old House; Rachael Ray, Better Homes & Garden;
- Summer Reading Programs for Adult, Teen and Juveniles: @ $7,000;
- Additional prizes & incentives for all ages, @ $500 (think holiday 'How many candies are in the jar?' contests);
- Gift bags for youth receiving their first library card;
- Chromebook laptops and Hotspots (portable Wi-Fi connections) pilot project; $10,000;
- FOAL is a supporter of the A-Town Create Space (Makerspace & STEM events), $3,000 a year;
- Transferring Atascadero News onto microfilm every 2-3 years;
- Jackie and her staff are working on purchasing new vinyl covered furniture for the children and teen areas.
This is what your donations and shopping do for our Library and our community. Like someone said, 'it takes a village.' Thanks to all of our volunteers who work in the bookstore greeting customers, in the book room sorting through the books we have been gifted, or who deliver donations to other non-profits. Our webmaster keeps our store happenings in front of the community, Linda Zirk keeps our shifts organized and Alice - who had the vision to bring the bookstore to life, for her guidance. For a small group of fun volunteers we do mighty things for many people we don't often get to see.

The County of San Luis Obispo is celebrating 100 years of library services. There are several entertaining and educational events planned for the entire year of 2019. Please continue to check the library

and the events calendar for dates, places and times.
- 2019 Calendars have been printed with historical pictures and dates. You can pick one up at a county branch near you.
- On Tuesday, March 26 at 10am we hope teens and adults will share creative poetry with a theme of 'For 100 years'. Read poetry 100 years old or your own creation of this theme.
- Movies from the 1900's will be shown at several branches. Atascadero Library will be showing a movie starring Mary Pickford on Thursday, June 13 at 12 noon, and another classic film on Saturday, October 26 at 12 noon. Bring a lunch and join us!
Libraries going fine free!
If you haven't heard yet all County of SLO Libraries have stopped charging overdue fines!
We want to get library materials into as many peoples' hands as possible, and overdue fines create a barrier to access. People will still be responsible for returning materials they check out, but there will no longer be overdue fines to discourage future use of the library. So far, we have received more pleasant surprise comments than disappointed ones.
The PEEPS are coming!
Peeps Diorama Contest! Create a Peeps diorama based on a book, poem, or nursery rhyme! Patrons can begin submitting a diorama made with at least ONE marshmallow peep for our Spring contest now. There will be three categories: Kids, Teens, and Adults. Diorama's are due to the library by April 1st. It is not a joke! Voting begins on April 2nd and ends April 30th. Winner's will be notified after votes are counted.
