Post-Civil Rights & African-American Church Music

Guest Lecturer
LMC Music department's vocal instructor, Silvester Henderson presents Dr. James Lance Taylor from the University of San Francisco as a guest lecturer on March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall, MU-720. 

Dr. Taylor,  chair of the department of politics at the University of San Francisco, speaks frequently with youth and community groups on issues of education and community empowerment. He  is the author of Black Nationalism in the United States: From Malcolm X to Barack Obama (2011). Between 2009 and 2011, he served as the president of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS).

March is Women's History Month

Campus bulletin boards to honor Women's History Month
Throughout the month of March, the  Office of Student Life will display posters about, and in celebration of, women on campus bulletin boards. As you walk around, notice the many informational and inspirational posters about women's contributions to history.
 
Film screening to celebrate women
The Empowerment Project film is coming to Los Medanos College on Monday, March 22 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in  the Library Community Room (L-109). This award-winning film reveals the lives of extraordinary women across the United States, and their individual career paths. We invite you to join us for the screening and panel discussion afterward with local, successful, extraordinary women who will share their unique career journeys. Femina Open Mic
In honor of Women's History Month, the Office of Student Life is inviting artists to perform at our Open Mic. Learn about the clubs at LMC 
Club Day
Wednesday, March 29, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., come out to the Indoor Quad (by the Bookstore) to learn about student clubs and organizations on campus! There are over 30 clubs on campus, and many will be tabling, hoping to meet you and tell you all about what their clubs have to offer.
 
Where were you in the 60's? 
A panel of faculty and staff will share their experiences during the height of the civil rights movement. Come by the Student Services Center, Room 412, on Friday, March 31, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., and hear descriptions of the people and events that helped to shape their views and define a generation. No sign-up needed; just drop by.

New  earlier 1:00 p.m. start time
Way to go Grads! Each year the number of students participating in the commencement ceremony has continued to grow, so this year the Graduation Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 26th, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the LMC football stadium.  The earlier start time will help us avoid rush hour traffic, and allow for everyone to go out and celebrate afterward.

Students who have completed academic requirements during the Summer 2016, Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 semesters will be invited to attend the ceremony. More information will be available soon at the   Commencement Ceremony Web page.

Job Shadow during Spring Break 2017
Can't wait to get your career started? Or, are you not sure what you really want to do after graduation? Either way, take advantage of this exciting opportunity to explore a new career field through this one week program!  
 
During Spring Break (April 3-7), you can shadow a career professional for 25-30 hours. This can include working on small projects, attending meetings, and informational conversations on how to prepare for that career path in government, hospitality, graphic communications, real estate, insurance and many more career choices!

Although the March 2nd Priority deadline has passed, you can still complete apply. For federal and state aid, apply online at   FAFSA.ed.gov .  To watch a video about how to apply for Federal Financial Aid click here .
 
If you are an AB540 Student, apply for state aid online through the  2017-18 California Dream Act Application found at dream.csac.ca.gov .
 
 
Second chance for the  Cal Grant 
To be considered for a 2017-2018 Cal Grant award, you must complete the requirements by September 2, 2017 (Postmark Deadline):
 
1. Submit a 2017-18 FAFSA 
2. Submi a certified Cal Grant Grade Point Average (GPA) form to the California Student Aid Commission.
 
**For a student to be considered for a 2017-2018 Cal Grant award, a new GPA form must be received by the Commission by the stated deadline.

BRENTWOOD CENTER NEWS  
  
The Brentwood Tutoring Center is now open! 
Get a jump on your studies by taking advantage of free tutoring services in the Center for Academic Support, Room 13.  We offer drop-in peer tutoring in many subject areas, as well as one-on-one reading and writing support services offered by English faculty.  Take a look at the schedule of services posted outside the door to Room 13, or check us out on the  Brentwood Center website. To schedule a one-on-one appointment for reading and writing services, just stop by the front office or call (925) 513-1625. 
 
Thinking of a transfer to CSUEB? 
A representative from CSU East Bay is available at the Brentwood Center several times per semester to meet with students interested in transferring to a CSU.  You can book an appointment in several ways: stop by the office, call the office, or book your appointment online.
   
Visit a state college or university for free!  
Students are picked up at both the Brentwood Center and the Pittsburg campus for bus tours to major colleges such as Sonoma State and Cal Poly. Check out the University Tours web page for schedules and to sign-up.
