This Week's Old Doc: Wes Palatnick
62 years old
Winnipeg, MB
"I have had the pleasure of seeing (and hopefully helping) the specialty grow from those “Interns in Casualty” (Emergency) to what it is now: a sought after career with many subspecialties. What I like the most about being an emergency physician is that you have to be a 'jack of all trades and a master of all.'"

CAEP Academic Leadership Symposium & Reception
The symposium is followed by the Residents, Medical Students, & Academic Symposium Reception [4:00 - 5:00 PM] and the Academic Section Meeting [5:00 - 6:30 PM]. Make sure to purchase your symposium ticket when you register for conference.
EM Advancement Fund: $40 for the 40th
Help us to celebrate CAEP. Two ways to support the EM Advancement Fund: purchase a ticket for the Docs that Rock concert in Calgary (May 29), or add a "$40 for the 40th" donation when you purchase your conference registration. If you have already registered you can still make a contribution at theemaf.org.

Funds raised support CAEP's grant competition, which help to make more and better research possible. Thank you to all those who have already given their support this year.
CAEP in the News
Reader's Digest Canada - 50 Secrets Hospitals Don't Tell You

CAEP's president, Paul Pageau, gives tips on navigating a stay at the hospital in Reader's Digest's May issue. To quote tip number 25, "CIHI has estimated that more than a million unnecessary medical tests and treatments such as head scans and chest X-rays are given to Canadians annually, often simply because patients expect them.
'This ties up our resources,' says Pageau. 'Patients should ask their doctor, ‘Do I need that test? Is it something that a clinical decision will be based on?’”

Copies are now available on newsstands across the country. Click here to visit the Reader's Digest website.
Health Canada’s Latest Weapon in the Opioid Wars: Big Yellow Stickers

CAEP's Co-chair of the Public Affairs Committee, Andrew Affleck, comments on Health Canada's recent decision regarding the labelling of opioid prescription bottles. To quote the arti cle, "He applauds any effort aimed at combatting the public health crisis, but argues there needs to be a comprehensive approach, not just discrete little jabs at specific aspects of a sprawling, complex problem. And physician education is key."
